- How to Repair this increasingly more common fault
The Citroen C4 Wont Start, Also the Peugeot 3008 has similar issues.
the ignition comes on but the engine won't turn or start.
Found there to be a fault with the circuit breaker above the battery.
I show in the video haw to reset and start the car.
The Circuit Breaker Fault causes warning lights for the handbrake\ parking brake fault, engine fault, battery charging fault.

So I have sorted this in 4 different C4P (Grands aswell) and we found it is the Clutch cylinder. The reason the handbrake fault appears is due to the auto release handbrake on the 2015 models and above. Each time we have tested a car a strange error of ‘clutch master cylinder position is not correct’ and the only way to get the car to start was to clear the codes, pump the clutch a couple of times and it started every time. It turns out the clutch switch / cylinder is a cheaper component and is a bit of a struggle to fit but only took me an hour or so. I have confirmed this is on Peugeot’s as well. (Please feel free to correct me if you have had different) the next time you have the fault occur, get diagnostics run, from roadside assistance or the local garage, the fault stays until it is cleared. This also explains why you can get the fault while driving and the car operates fine, until you stop, then it won’t start again. So to sum up, the fault is a cylinder position fault (and as it can’t confirm you foot is on the clutch, it will not release the HB) but the fault appears as a handbrake fault on the dash. Check the error codes next time it happens and please tell me if you see otherwise. Unless other issues are appearing do not get your mechanic to replace massive parts (I have seen posts saying this, hence the comment) check it. I hope this helpful, as having a idea of the issue would have saved me weeks of fault hunting and testing. Thanks for the video, as it got in to looking. - ยานยนต์และพาหนะ

DS4 2011 - Had a similar problem, in my case the 8 year old AGM Battery died, worked like a charm after replacement. I hit and shaked that relay for good measure :)

Yes it was a fried fuse board!!! There was water getting behind the plastics on the bonnet fuse board was soaking and full of corrosion I changed it out sealed the fuse box and other plastics it fired right up and been driving daily since

I live in the south-west of Spain with a doubtful 2010 C4 GP semi-auto, and you have just dug me out of a huge hole! Many thanks, and would appreciate anyone's ideas of how to stop it happening again - it sounds like the circuit breaker is the culprit. Anyone changed only that, and if so did it help?

Hi, I had extacly the same problem, I couldn't get rid of it by myself, firstly i thought it is battery failure. It turned out i need to replace BSI module (I believe that's how I should call it in English). Everything is just fine now.

Had some trouble with one of these a few years ago. it just kept turning over and over would not fire up.turned out to be the wiring for the fuel pump.ran a fused feed from the ignitinon and it fired straight up.still on the rd now

Appreciate the video mate, i was dreading its a serious issue, the C4has been perfect. I tried to change the battery and this dreaded msgs popped up. hopefull will give this a go and it should be ok. Very arkward -ve terminal location. Typical French..lol

I have a 2012 Grand Picasso 1.6 diesel. I am having similar issues but the fuse box didn't seem the same so have left it The battery has charge. Even changed to for a new one to make sure. First time was last Saturday, when i turn the key, initially nothing but dash lit up. No starter motor noise, just dask lights. We were out when it happened. RAC pushed me off and it was fine, for 1 day. Next day it started but we didn't turn it off until home, 25mile round trip. Then turn the key off, took it out, car keeps running. Had to stall to turn off. Now no start again but a brief flash on the dash. Sounds to me like no power but battery seems fine. Any ideas? Happy to video / photograph if it helps.

My 2011 C4, stuck like a stubborn donkey 🐴. All error messages started rolling on my dashboard display, wouldn't start though. I did what you have described, no need to tow it !!! Drove back 250 kms without any problems. Then removed the jumper and it kept on running 💨

Absolute star our battery was dying we changed battery but had engine fault due to the energy accumulator .so we been bashing our heads thinking we will have to replace the accumulator thought would have stab in the dark at this and cleared the fault no issues since. Try this 1st before going to garage

Hello, God bless you for this video. Anyway, I have a C4 Grand picasso 2008 automatic, it stop working because it won't select any gear except neutral, the mechanic change a few part, reprogram it and got it working, he took it out on street drive test it all ok, I went next day to pick it but car won't start and the fault is fuse box, he removed fuse box and replace it but still fuse box fault.
Please what is your idea about this

I've got pretty much the exact same problem after changing the clutch on my mk1 grand picasso, while connecting the battery I did spark one of the positive wires and I thought I'd fried the ecu. Need to try this and if it works well thank you very much

Great easy to follow video, im having an issue with my citroen C4 1.6 diesel hatchabck 65 plate, when i turn the key to the on poistion the display shows the "electical circuit failure:have the vehicle rapired" warning, and beeps 3 times the service light also appears on the dash. The car starts and drives fine. I tried to check battery volts yesterday but volt meter was playing up, so i jus tdisconnected the positive terminal, left it for a min or two and reconnected, warning went away and i reset the service light by holding the mileage counter down method. Then i starated the car, everything looked good. Turned it off and started it another two times, all fine. I then locked the car and went in for tea, came out about two hours later put keys in turned them to the set position before starting engine, warning came back as did the service light. So im not sure whats causing this? Ive got an OBDR reader and looked but it showed no faults?

@@aaanton11 Cheers ill have a go this evening, i did disconnect battery again last night then put it back and took it for a 20min drive all, fine, went back out an hour later and error came back with the service light? ref testing battery where should i put the neg probe of volt meter since the negative terminal is well and truly hidden out of reach.?
I have a similar problem with mine. Mine is a c4 grand Picasso 2013 hdi. Was driving fine, then started to sho problems with the eco mode, then mulitiple errors and now won’t even start. Had a new alternator fited, battery is 1.5 year old and good a the moment. Looked at fuse really all appears ok! Don’t know what to do next!

Do you have any advice for this EXACT SAME problem but for a 1.6 L coupe, manual transmission, 2005 year model? The area of the maxi fuses you have demonstrated in your video looks completely different ...
They are very similar, if you put a volt meter across the fuses, you might be able to see where the loss is, and backed with a fused link,Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠

@@aaanton11 if you compare the car in this image parkers-images.bauersecure.com/gallery-image/pagefiles/200344/engine-bay/1752x1168/dsc06966.jpg to the one in this one i.wheelsage.org/pictures/citroen/c4/autowp.ru_citroen_c4_au-spec_6.jpg you'll see that there aren't any fuses on top of the battery - if you remove the cover you'll just find the battery.

I had citroen c5 got to installing new seal for engine and gear after finished car crank but not starting i tried everything in car furl pumps, spark plugs, coils, fuses , crank sensor , air sensor same crank no start mechanic told me to change ecu kit its last thing to do so is it maybe a reason as its make me crazy 4 weeks and not starting , note that my car 1.6 turbo engine 2012 model and 80000 km milage ONLY

I have C4 2012, intermittent parking brake fault error come on dashboard. Reset it if engine turn off and start again. Dealer unable to find in diagnostic too. Fedup with it. Where is your garage? I wish if you can have a look my car. Will appreciate for your kind help.

@@aaanton11 I actually forgot to mention it blow the starter fuse every time When I turn the starter.
@@aaanton11 it worked just with disconnecting the battery. Again not sure is it because of overnight time or because I disconnect the battery.
Wondering if you can help me. Since mechanic put a new reconditioned handbrake motor in, also he said handbrake switch, and brake switch needed replacing in. So new ones purchased. Oh and new battery. He hasn't been able to re calibrate them :( also I have no horn, radio won't play, no windscreen wipers, windows won't operate, indicators. :( is this an easy fix? Is a wire loose? Hes peeing me off, I'm due to go away in a weeks time. Recently split with my ex, so I know nothing about cars, apart from changing a wheel, and checking water/oil/ etc

Had exactly the same problem on 2014 grand picasso c4 and after being recovered back to main dealers twice found that simply holding clutch down and pushing on start button for 5 seconds continously invokes emergency start procedure. After starting you then have to release handbrake manually with switch before driving. Happened a few times over the years and seems to reset after driving home and leaving off until next morning.

This has happened to me today i was cleaning the car inside went to start to move and got economy mode message and parking brake fault - Have i knocked something under the seat perhaps to cause this? Going to be messing about getting to and from work till i can sort this out nightmare!

I have a problem with the Peugeot 507 rxh 2.0Hdi Hybrid 2016, where after replacing the battery, the computer throws out an error: "Electrical Circuit Fault: Have the vehicle repaired."
The authorized service with the original diagnostics failed to clear the error. ?!

I don't know if you have this 'sorted' at all, but it's normally an option you can turn on and off in the car's settings.

im having a simular issue to this only i have a few extra simptoms, im hoping you have seen this so here goes, it started with the headlights being stuck on even tho there switched off and the car is off (i checked automatic lights its not that), and it sounds like my starter is constantly engaged, but it wont crank yet it started 1 time after i relised there was an issue with the lights, i get all the random messages like in this video, please tell me you have an idea of what it could be, i have a c4 grand piccasso vtr 2010 moddel diesle automatic

My 2008 C4 Grand is doing similar, garage haven't a clue.. it happened once when driving fault came up and engine died, managed to get it going by manually releasing brake, was fine for days .. then parked up yesterday came back and wouldn't start, had it recovered to garage and it start every time they tried, Its back home now .. if it fails to start I will try this and let you know

Hi, I have a very similar problem. My C4 is throwing up the very same supposed faults, but the difference is that the electric handbrake won't work all the time and the engine actually starts. But it gives a series of faults like ABS not working, repair the car. SER(?) not working repair the car. About 5 faults stream up. But the engine starts. I don't really know if the car is drivable, I'm too scared to try lol I know it's a rathe5r old vid but I'd appreciate some advice.

@@aaanton11 Thanks for the advice and apologies for the delay getting back to you. I'm 100% car illiterate! I was hospitalised for 3 months in March '22 and from July onwards someone would turn the engine over for me just to make sure it kept running. After I left hospital in June - the car was starting fine - we went to run it again. Completely dead! I got a local garage o take it in and change the battery. The car started first turn and they brought it back to me. I kept turning the engine over daily - I'm still unable to drive - but each time I did it threw up a fault. I think in total we now have six or seven faults. The electric handbrake certainly works now but there is a delay of a couple of seconds until it comes on and you can hear a whine/hum as it comes on.
I'm at my wits end, I'm hoping to be able to drive by Christmas. My local mechanic tells me he has tried everything, but the persistence of this tells me there must be something he hasn't tried 🤔

Brilliant, however this only partially worked for me as when I turned the engine off the car was dead again. Can I bridge that gap permanently with a piece of metal or would that be unsafe ?

Have this problem BUT on 2011picasso xsara. So It has battery under seat (*#@#*) I don't see any 'breaker' . Have removed battery to fully charge put back and only get clicks with economy mode notice. Was sitting up for months But Had no issues and it started ...then. Now I have only frustration and no idea what problem is. Any ideas appreciated and did anyone contact you to share their expertise as you had asked? Hello there. Exactly the same issue has just happened on the better half’s 59 plate C4 Picasso VTR+ this morning.
Tried disconnecting/reconnecting the battery - no joy. The part where you have bridged the two parts I’m a bit confused about as the fuse layout is slightly different here. Warning lights appear when ignition is turned such as “Handbrake Off” & “Faulty Parking Brake” along with “Faulty Gear Box”.
Having no knowledge of cars at all, are you able to point me in the right direction. Appreciate the help.

Wiring loom next too battery, very common fault for wires to go bad in the loom causing intermittent electrical issues. Caused by the gasses in the battery affecting the plastics in the cables. Poor battery location choice by citreon.

The vehicle will have gone into emergency mode you can’t get it out of this mode unless you can start the car which for you is not an option the vehicle will be expensive to repair if the timing belt has broken it will need a full engine strip down and replacement of cylinder head valves etc, nightmare 😞 Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠

Great help mate. I’ve tried to do the same to mine but notice the fuses aren’t quite the same - any suggestions please ? Sorry thought I could upload a picture. Also although it was just ‘clicking’ the other day (so I thought starter motor) - it did start after some fiddling. I then fully charged battery but couldn’t replicate. Today try your suggestions there was a clicking coming from the glove box fuse area (that before I tried anything. Order a diagnostics kit and making sure battery is fully charged.

Hi, Can you help please ,I have a semi-auto citreon c4 grand picasso diesel 1.6 which was at first would only run in 1 and 2 nd manual gears, now it just wont start, and only thing coming up on dash is "apply footbrake" we have had 2 mechanics scan it and no faults coming up , we live rural and need a car so we had to buy a cheap one, for now, we have spent over 600 quid on the m o t etc and this happened only days after, so would like to fix it somehow as need to get some money back if possible , so would be really grateful if you could maybe come up with what it could be , as is an absolute mystery !!

Thanks for the video. I have a similar issue with a Citroen DS5. Battery was replaced them had issues starting, loads of faults, would only open manually with key out of remote......finally started but displays "electrical circuit fault. Have the vehicle repaired" it drives and runs fine now, but error message pops up each time the start button is pressed. Do you think this is a broken breaker or would a bsi reset possibly fix the problem?

I've found French cars 2nd most unreliable cars behind JLR. I've been in Roadside service for 33 years so seen them all. My experience is a lucky few get by with few problems but the general is they are unreliable electrically. (and transmissions)

Hi Andy I'm back again, had a mad one tonight, dropped my pal off home, I turned the engine off while we were chatting, 5mins later start the car up, put it in auto and it wouldn't move, in any gear, turned it off and tried a few times, locking it up, immobilizer off on ect , still the same, any ideas be appreciated.👊🏻🙋🏻🇬🇧

I have the same car and it will often and off come up with “circuit electric fault. Have your vehicle repaired” and the service light switches on. Then goes off for a while and back on again. This is since I’ve changed the battery after the original died. No one can explain what’s happening. Please help a single mum as this is stressing me out.

I checked and they are all showing a current.
I accelerated real fast off the lights and a few seconds later the dash lit up with warnings and the car would barely move. I did a diagnostic reset and it all came back to normal.

So I have sorted this in 4 different C4P (Grands aswell) and we found it is the Clutch cylinder. The reason the handbrake fault appears is due to the auto release handbrake on the 2015 models and above. Each time we have tested a car a strange error of ‘clutch master cylinder position is not correct’ and the only way to get the car to start was to clear the codes, pump the clutch a couple of times and it started every time. It turns out the clutch switch / cylinder is a cheaper component and is a bit of a struggle to fit but only took me an hour or so. I have confirmed this is on Peugeot’s as well. (Please feel free to correct me if you have had different) the next time you have the fault occur, get diagnostics run, from roadside assistance or the local garage, the fault stays until it is cleared. This also explains why you can get the fault while driving and the car operates fine, until you stop, then it won’t start again. So to sum up, the fault is a cylinder position fault (and as it can’t confirm you foot is on the clutch, it will not release the HB) but the fault appears as a handbrake fault on the dash. Check the error codes next time it happens and please tell me if you see otherwise. Unless other issues are appearing do not get your mechanic to replace massive parts (I have seen posts saying this, hence the comment) check it. I hope this helpful, as having a idea of the issue would have saved me weeks of fault hunting and testing. Thanks for the video, as it got in to looking. Take care. Alex.
What happened to me twice:
1. while driving shuts down all lamps go off locks wheel - lucky me I was going slow - I couldnt even lock the car, was playing with battery and power came back
2. parked the car, shut it off, went out of car to lock it, nothing - knew its battery, played with it - flames started poppin so waited a while then put it back on, car has power
I'm scared this could happen at night in high speed, all lights will go off, wheel lock and Im dead. Wtf is this car, I'm driving C4 2013.
Sounds like you have a major short somewhere, check the main power wire to the starter motor, and alternator hasn't chaffed on the engine block or body, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠

Sorry I have to disagree. We have always had French cars and all been great. You obviously encounter faulty ones and tarnish them all with the same brush. Just because it's French, does not automatically make it unreliable.

Don’t be so defensive about French cars. Yes they’re great but they are not perfect particularly when it comes to electronics. The hdi engines have a Bosch system….German….which is too complicated for its own good, and that’s a criticism of overly complicated German mindset. I’m back to a 306 diesel before the hdi engines because Peugeot could not fix my 806….great when it ran….but an electrical problem keeps killing the ECU. They wanted to throw a fortune at it….parts swappers…..so it’s become a project for me and my beautiful 806.
I’ve just helped repair a wiring fault on my friends Golf….and in the process discovered VW have designed it so that the wipers can’t work if the bonnet is open which is absurd.
I own a Citroen C4 for the last 18 years and I can confirm that the electronics and sensors are absolutely crap. I have always something blinking on the dashboard and things that randomly works or not. And yes, the car is serviced on time but it is actually impossible to fix every alert continually. It is really exhausting mentally and economically

This has happened to me today i was cleaning the car inside went to start to move and got economy mode message and parking brake fault - Have i knocked something under the seat perhaps to cause this? Going to be messing about getting to and from work till i can sort this out nightmare!

@@paolofabri8758 I didn't sort the issue out i just got rid of the vehicle. However its corrosion within the fuse box engine side. Method is to take out the fuses making sure to check what goes where when replacing. Then clean the contacts with 99% Isopropyl. Even better if you can take the whole thing out and scrub it down and replace fuses.
