I agree that the piano at the beginning was a bit distracting but as soon as she started to sing I completely melted into the song. Her tone is warm and gentle yet incredibly powerful and she sings the lines with such conviction. She’s amazing!
Not a fan of the piano arrangement, but Walker is just phenomenal. I love the score to this show and plan to bring my partner to see it for his first time (my 8th but first time on Broadway). Hope she is still with the show next month!
She is perfection and embodies everything you’d want a vocal student to live up to! Strong breath support doesn’t scream just a beautiful voice with such a beautiful tone. I like this jazz version- it makes me want to look up what else this woman has sung- perfection.
Jazz musician here. Completely fine with the piano. When the chorus is gone you need something to fill that power and space and when you don’t have the percussion you need to change the feel of the arrangement to compensate. Therefore you need a strong piano with a major left hand to handle the bass and beat and a wide ranging right hand to fill the harmony in. This was terrific. I host a jazz radio show, and I would proudly play this on the program if it were an audio recording. Surprises come when the things you understand aren’t delivered in the way you expect. That’s art. Loosen up.
Non-jazz-musician, non-musician here. The problem is that this piano arrangement is way too upbeat, rigid, and rhytmic for this particular piece. There's no need for the pianist to drive the song forwards rhytmically so rigidly, rather they should focus on fleshing out the harmonic soundscape. The arrangement could've been written more like a traditional organ piece - or, to speak within the Lion King realm, it could've sounded more like a more restrained version of how Elton John plays the piano when performing Can You Feel the Love Tonight himself. All that said, I recognise this is a very good pianist! My gripes are with the arrangement. All the best :-)

The people that are commenting they don't like the piano arrangement, I'm convinced it's actually the horrible digital piano samples they don't like. They're SUPER bright with a whole lot of presence in that Elton John kind of way, so the piano is really piercing and cuts through the mix in a way it shouldn't.
