Tips for Training Beginners on a Handgun

- In this video, I trained an eight year old how to shoot a handgun. Some of the tips given in this video can be applied to beginners of all ages. It's important that they understand the safety fundamentals first before using a real firearm.
Side note, the cameraman recorded this video with an extender. At no point was he in front of a firearm or behind the shooting lines. I didn't think much of this until I saw the footage a week later and realized people might think this is the case.

Ava,when I teach people, I now tell them to press the trigger instead of pull or squeeze. I think that there is a psychological/physiological connection. If you think “pull” or “squeeze”, what does your mind “picture”? Now think “press”. What does your mind “picture”. “Squeeze” or “pull”makes my mind picture pulling or squeezing something with a lot of force. “Press” makes my mind picture pressing something with minimal force.

I love this. My daughter is 8 now starting teaching her gun safety when she was 5 and has been shooting with her ever since. With that being said, I have no worries what so ever having guns in the home. She know not to touch them unless her mother or I are with her. She also she knows they are to be respected and never played with. If you are someone with guns in the home, I think the wrong thing to do is hide them from them. It only increases their curiosity and the possibility of something terrible happening.
Excellent instruction! I've heard it said that the last thing any parent should do is "create forbidden fruit" by never letting your child shoot. Teaching your kids to shoot takes away the mystery and awe surrounding the gun, which greatly lessens the temptation to mess around with it. Great job momma bear!

Great job! I can’t tell you how many women come into my class and say that their brothers received gun training but they didn’t. Like, why?! Teach your daughter(s) to protect themselves.

My son has been going for awhile, and now my daughter is ready for brutally putting down attackers with not only a firearm, but the best method of destroying someone quickly. All the joy hard rock, profanity, and learning to break people.

I'd worked with horses "professionally" for a few years when I was younger. Most of it was ad hoc, learn on the job, bs. Later on in life, I had the amazing experiences of LEARNING about riding from two fabulous instructors. One of them was a woman my Dad happened to be dating and another one was just a random trail guide I employed in Prescott, AZ.
You just can't mimic the ability to...TEACH!
At every step, the instructor was In Tune with where the student was AT, and ready to encourage more success, in a logical, "no fear" way. (Even though shooting a pistol CAN BE a little bit scary/smelly/alarming the 1st couple of times!)

Really good job of taking her around the bases, including the eye dominance question. Much better to address that before firing round #1 than sort it out later.

Ava, you really made a lot of improvement in a short period. Your student took it seriously and listened hard. You both did a great job!
Very nice! I've seen adults on the range practically frozen with fear anticipating that first round. You gained her trust and confidence allowing her to focus on the lesson instead of becoming anxious and unfocused.
Note to parents who don't like guns. No disrespect intended, but children are naturally curious and will sneak around and learn on their own if not taught correctly. Everyone remembers their first Playboy foldout,, taste of liquor, tobacco, and their first encounter with a gun. Kids WILL discover all of these and more on their own if not taught early and correctly. Set your opinions aside and teach or hire a professional to teach your children for you so they don't have to learn the hard way. Better still, attend a firearms class with them.
You could see the enthusiasm oozing out of Teagan. The eagerness to learn. She picked up the pointers quickly. You did a fantastic job!
Kudos to Mom and Dad for allowing you to teach her. Hopefully, they will let Teagan continue on her journey towards good gun safety and good marksmanship, And kudos to you for being such a good teacher! Nice job!

You are a natural leader. I loved this reminded me of when one of my uncles tought me to shoot. One round at a time, even when he took me squirrel hunting. Once he was comfortable with my show of safety he let me carry the rounds myself. Good job!

My oldest daughter couldn’t close or squint just one of her eyes. The doctor said that it’s a learned thing. Now she can squint or close her eyes independently.

Great job! Children are inherently curious. If they find a firearm, they're likely to want a closer look at it, touch it and even pick it up. Sometimes the best way to satisfy a curiosity is with experience. My daughters were about that age for their first range visit. I left all my ego and macho in a dresser drawer at home. I selected a .22 handgun and we went over safe handling, then allowed them each to shoot it. Very much like you did in this video. A big focus was placed on trigger discipline. My primary reason for taking them was to head off that curiosity by allowing them to handle and fire a handgun in a safe setting under the supervision of an experienced adult. From time to time, I would place an unloaded and safety checked handgun on the bed next to my desk. I would call one of my daughters in the room and ask her to hand it to me. Instinctively, their finger was always safely outside of the trigger guard. Each has been to the range many times since with my wife and me and allowed to fire different handguns under safe supervision. I've also encouraged them to just let me know if they're curious about shooting one of my guns and we'll take it to the range. Some of them enjoy shooting more than others, but they all understand how to safely handle a firearm.

I think it's great you're helping our youth break into the sport. We do need more Ladies/Girls that are into shooting sports. Way to start a youngster shooting in a low stress environment! Using your Mom skills get you high marks/street cred!

I taught my daughters firearms safety and how to properly handle one. I also enrolled them in a NRA basic rifle course for kids where they learned nomenclature and safe handling and operation were reinforced. They were 8 and 9. My girls were the youngest, but ended up being the best shooters.
Both inspiring and terrifying that an 8 year old girl is safer and more intelligent than half of the adult "specialists" I see at the range these days...

What a fantastic job of teaching your observation skills, patience and getting down her level is tops. I fully agree with the single round training for new and beginners till you feel they can handle things safely, I see to many hand a gun over to a new shooter with a full magazine. Student wise young lady you are a great student with fantastic listening and communication skills and applying what you’ve been taught, oh one more thing great shooting!
I find when teaching people to shoot, the first shoot is really good then they start flinching till they get use to it

Adorable! Nicely done, and it is very true that it is tough for parent to teach their kids gun skills, or many other things.
My wife grew up in north Louisiana and she’s far deadlier with a 20 gauge than me without trying.
I taught all of my kids, 2 girls, 1 boy to shoot as soon as they could pick up a gun. To date no regrets.

As a trainer it is very difficult to train a family member, I always left the initial basics to a third party, range time after initial instruction is much easier and comfortable for all parties.

Very good instructions, though I don't agree with training one eye closed. If she is a natural with both eyes open, she won't have to relearn if she goes on to more defensive or tactical shooting. I also think you should have edited out the critique of the father's instruction style.

I've been trying to find a 22lr pistol for my own children to shoot and the Ruger SR22 seems to have a shorter length of pull than the Taurus TX, or Glock 44. Some of the 22 small frame revolvers look appealing too.

Excellent training. My only question is wouldn't a .22 rifle first than the .22 pistol be better for a first time/beginner?
I think it would be better to do some dry fire before you hit the range with a kid so you would figure out the grip, the eye, the pull before you load it, not after. It is also worth considering teaching children to pull the trigger with two fingers, because even if they are able to do it using all of their strength it will make their hands shake while pulling. I also wouldn't start with a handgun. Shooting a rifle in a prone position or with it's weight completely supported standing up or sitting down would be way more managable for them.
I practiced with her the day before and did dry-fire practice, which I mentioned in the beginning of the video. I don’t think two fingers is necessary if they can pull the trigger. It just creates bad habits that might carry on as they get older.

I know they make kids size rifles, but is there such a thing as a kids size pistol?
Not really. They have some that are smaller in size and grip, but nothing marketed towards kids. Browning makes a .380 1911 that’s pretty tiny.
@@AvaFlanell A Walther P22 is pretty small, too. I've got one that I suppress for James Bond LARPing. Anyway, GREAT job teaching the little lady, I hope she sticks with it! The only thing I'd change is I would tell her not to ride the slide home when chambering a round.
