- Janine was travelling through Tanzania earlier this year between The Central Serengeti and Ndutu and had only 24 hours to realise her dream of visiting the Ngorongoro crater. This begs the question: on a tight safari itinerary, is one day enough to take in this amazing destination?
Janine will be returning to Tanzania soon and if you would like to join her you can find details of her itinerary here: www.pangolinphoto.com/safaris...

Have you ever been to The Ngorongoro Crater before? Would you like to? If you have been would you say that 24 hours was enough?
I've been there, and had 2 drives (one full day and one half day) and i felt the half day was not necessary. I was there in November.
This was our last stop on our February trip to Tanzania. I'm not sure if I would agree with your one day is a good conclusion but would suggest that a second day would allow you to customize your day a bit more. Immediately upon descending into the caldera, we came across a large pride of lions. We had lots of time to take shots and wait for the perfect light. then we drove into the forest to the south towards one of the assent roads where we found a large herd of elephants including a very large bull that was jousting with a number of younger males. Nothing serious but it was a great show. We were also approached by the herd we found that the families were not shielding the babies from us which allowed us to get some truly great shots.
So why a second day - well we didn't get around to the marsh areas until midday and this made for very harsh lighting for the various birds and hippos. The egrets put on a great show as they stood on the backs of the hippos. early or late light would have helped to turn interesting photos into great photos.
One day is enough if you sleep on the rim (expensive).
I can roam there for weeks
I went down there in 1978, when camping was a rarity - 5 days wasn’t enough, and we had the place to ourselves.
I will visit the crater in appox 3 weeks and was trying to educate myself- will also spend 1 day there so thank you for answering my question and the beautiful video.
The first time we visited the crater was 30 years ago spent 5 days there, then it was absolutely amazing , the photograpy outstanding. Went back last year what a circus it has become bus loads of people the picnic areas are a joke and people treat it like an open air zoo. They have ruined an obsoletly wonderfull place.
I visited Kenya in 1980 and it's like you said. It's ruined now( just like Tanzania or South Africa).Soon their will be more cars and people than animals.
Great photography tips Janine! I've toured East Africa extensively and there is nothing like the crater! It's so unique. You capture it's beauty extremely with your narration and photography skills. In my opinion, 24hrs isn't enough as it's often the highlight of most people's safaris. Also, since you will most likely combining it with Serengeti, it will involve too much travelling on rough roads in a short period of time. Extremely tiring. Looking forward to going there some time this year again!
I was there 2 weeks ago and we saw all the animals you could think off in one day. Its a great place for safari photography
Love your work😍😘😍😘😍
Love the crater!
Great isnt it?
I have been here and its definitely wildlife photographer's paradise !! And 24 hours are not enough there.
Thanks for letting us explore with you!
Janine is so beautiful!
Awesome, Janine! Thanks so much for bringing us along!
You are so welcome!
Thank you! Nice video!😍👍
Absolutely fabulous! I very much enjoyed tagging along with you, Janine. Thanks Pangolin, for creating and for sharing this video.
You are so welcome!
Thanks so much for sharing another wonderful video like always Janine! You are awesome and I am happy to see you in a video that Simon posted when he was a guest in Pangolin recently, is my biggest dream to be in Africa and go in a photo safari with you guys, keep up with the awesome content 👍🤗
Please come and visit us soon! we look forward to hosting you.
The Best Place Ever
We couldnt agree more!
yes I have been there. There are many species and not shy. But wouldn't go there again. As you indicated, the animals can be far away and a beautiful composition is then just not possible.
It's great for watching wildlife, less so for photography for me. Regards, Ed
Janine... thank you... I sure wish I can some day go on a Pangolin Safari... it just may not be in the cards, or the wallet. thank you for bringing some of it to me. Those Crowned Cranes...wow.
Keep believing.... It will happen!
Wonderful, wonderful; loved your video, Janine; quite different then the other destinations; thank you for posting; just got back from Kasane/Botswana where Guts was our host; what an awesome host he was; take care, Kate and Ray from California
P.S. All of you form such a great team, including Sabine and Charl, Danielle, Will and Toby
So cool....
Cheers.
Love your work… great to see :)
Thank you so much 😀
love your videos Janine, and hello from Norway. Dream to go there
Thank you
Love the video. I will be in Tanzania in Feb 2024, and will have the opportunity to be at the wildlife reserve and crater for a few days. I will have 2 full frame Nikon bodies. Will a 200-500 lens and 70-200 be sufficient. I also have a 24-70 as well. Appreciate any insight.
Beautiful
Thank you! Cheers!
Never been but when is one day ever enough in paradise? Awesome video.
Thank you
Love your “hi key” shots… ❤
Thank you
Loved the crowned crane shots @4:21.
What a capture!
Great video I can only Dream
Maybe one day!
The crater is definitely a change of pace and stark contrast versus other safari experiences but I think 24 hours is an absolute minimum. If someone is going to do the crater 2x in a single day then one makes the decision to move at a pace that doesn’t allow for much time spent observing good sightings like lions hunts, matings, cubs etc. Also, the environment can be so different in different areas of the crater it’s, in my opinion, worth getting two full days in on order to allow for different scenes and sighting themes.
I think you might be right. Thanks
I think it’s a must. Hard to see more animals in one place in so little time. Plus it is conveniently located on the way from Arusha to Serengeti.
On one of our trips there, descending the crater, we encountered such a huge big tusker… I will never forget. Female elephants prefer the forest on the rim to protect calves.
Neeeed to go back
I recently visited, it is beyond words can discribe.
Isnt it just
The answer is NO! Just returned from Tanzania yesterday. Tarangiri National Park - Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti. Wish we'd have spent another day in the Crater.
One day, I will be gifted a chance to photograph so many beautiful animals ❤️ 🇨🇦❤️
Hopefully soon.
Another great video Janine, what equipment were you using on this visit?
I replied earlier to your question 'is one day enough'. My earlier answer was an unequivocal no, but that answer was based on being a photographer tha strives for the best shot as defined by: the 'best subject' , 'the best composition', and most importantly, 'the best lighting'. However, if you just want to experience the crater then yes, one day is enough.
The cost of a flight from North America seems minor compared to the cost of an additional night or two on the crater.
Only once in the crater and I do agree that 24 hours is adequate. I was there in August so prime tourist time and very congested. Once counted 15 cars observing several lions. It is nonetheless not to be missed and best enjoyed staying at one of the albeit-expensive lodges on the crater rim. Amazing from the air as well. Flew over it between Tarangire and Seronera and asked the pilot to point out the crater when we approached. Agree that it should not be missed.
Yes August can be veruy busy indeed. We are staying at the new Melia hotel on the crater rim on our safari.
i was there ( twice) a few years ago...still dreaming...2x3 days! I wanted to stay a little bit more but it was not possible...plane was waiting!
We were that place of historical place of human origin from apes millions ago😊
What camera bag do you use to keep all your kit in. When you fly, I do take it you don't but it in the hold.
🙋💗😉👍🌞🌞🌞😍🥰🦍🦒🦒🦛🦛🦛🦏🦏🐃🐃🦓🦓🦁🦁🦁🦁🐫🐫
It is not enough time. You need at least 3 days to see it all. 24 hours seem rushed. The crater was my first experience in Africa. I wasn't prepared for the sights and sounds of Africa. Even after 7 trips Africa, I can't get Africa out of my mind.
ভাই আমি বাংলাদেশি, আমি যেতে চাই ছবি তুলতে, ক্যামেরা নিয়ে যেতে পারবো কি? জায়গার নাম কি?
just bought Canon RF100-500mm f7.1 and whole set Kase filters. Hope it's worthy.
Great lens!
Been there. In the Sarangetti Tanzaniar. 😂
This time i beg to disagree with your opinion.
I didn’t like Ngorongoro at all: too many cars, too many people. Some of the picnic areas felt like a giant parking or a 4x4 exhibition.
Of course the animals are close - and relaxed.
But to a point that it feels more like an open-air zoo than like a conservation area.
I will go back to Tanzania for sure.
But will definitely skip Ngorongoro to favour for example Tarangire instead..
Thanks for the info.
Excatly
Its a shame that that what your experience was. It can be a special place.
@@PangolinWildlife I wish it had been. But Seronera and Tarangire suited me so much better.
Thanks for this great video.
I was lucky to have been to the crater in my youth at the beginning of the eighties!
Glad you enjoyed it
Its sooooooo overrated, yes its cool if you were alone, but there are so many vehicles in a small place, you dont look for the animals, you look for the cluster of 10-20 vehicles. If you are going through, ok sure, check it off the list, but dont expect an oasis of animals everywhere or you will be letdown.
