- In this video we find Toby exploring Kenya's unique and fascinating Samburu National Reserve - Home to The Samburu Special Five. Samburu is a fantastic wildlife photography destination and in this video Toby will explain why you should visit as part of a kenya photo safari itinerary.
Along with The Samburu Special 5 (which are Grevy's Zebra. Gerenuk, Reticulated Giraffe, Beisa Oryx and Somali Ostrich you will find plenty of predators such as Lions, leopards and cheetah. Birdlife is prolific and you will see plenty of vulturine guinea fowl, Somali bee eaters and an array of large raptors

Yes it is amazing. It is desert hot. But the amount of animals and special people there is amazing
Have been to Samburu in 1996, 2004 and was planning in 2020. Due to Covid postponed to August - September 2024.
Will travel three weeks from NBO to Travo, Amboseli, Naivasha, Masai Mara, Lake Elementaire, Aberdare and ending in Samburu.
Yes many years ago.Samburu (and Meru) offer a very contrasting and rich environment and topography and wildlife experience .
I would if I went to Kenya want to go there as a first choice .

I went to Samburu in 2009. It was the first park in Kenya we visited. It remains one of my favorites. But as wonderful as all the wildlife was, I really enjoyed meeting some of the tribes and learning about their life and culture. I would go back to Samburu and the rest of Kenya in a heartbeat.)

We were there in June 23. We were in Buffalo Springs though. But it was majestic and quiet secluded. We saw the special 5 and had some spectacular habitat snaps

It did. I can't wait to be back in Kenya.
I visited Samburu in Sept. 2022. What stood out were the effects of the unimaginable multi-year drought the area had suffered. I stayed at a camp that would truck water in to fill a watering hole for the animals. If not for that, we may not have seen any at all. The camp and people running it were absolutely lovely. I hope the drought has finally abated.

I was there in September 2022 and at that time there had been a severe drought.
There was actually very little game and in three days there, we saw no lions and no cheetah.
The standout sighting was a very relaxed female leopard with a cub, which we saw on consecutive days.
Apart from that, and some beautiful birds in the trees around the lodge, it was, to be honest, disappointing.

Maybe the drought has ended now - in a quick search, I wasn't able to find out.
That was rather unlucky I think. The drought appears to have abated since then as I had excellent game viewing and so have all the guests we have also sent since….maybe we can tempt you back?
I guess I will be the contrarian. We were there, as part of a much larger trip in Jan/Feb 2020 (right before Covd). The place was overrun with locusts at the time and was probably the least favorite place we visited.
