Hi Simon, I have just come back from my African safari, and I also got lost in the sights and smells of Africa. I still wake up early in the morning and have a craving to go on a safari drive. I am a hobby photographer, but I watched all your wonderful and informative youtubes and it made a huge difference to my ability to get some wonderful photos. So thank you so much. You are incredibly generous with your expertise, and I loved this youtube as it brought back so many memories. 🙏

I’ve been extremely fortunate to have travelled all over Africa several times, overlanding, backpacking, one organized photographic safari in Kenya and even hitchhiking from Zim through Botswana and down into South Africa. It was long ago, mid 1980’s to mid 1990’s. No digital cameras back then, just two Minolta bodies, a few lenses, a tripod and loads of slide film. Unlike today, I had to wait months sometimes, to get home and have the slides processed, never knowing if I got good shots or not. Of course I didn’t get pictures like Simon’s but I can guarantee people, you don’t need to be a professional to get great shots that you will cherish for a lifetime. I had a 28-200mm lens and there is no other feeling quite as exhilarating as sitting in the back of Land Rover, sometimes as close as 20 or 30 feet from a pride of lions or an elephant and taking as many shots as you can. Floating in small boats on the Lake Kariba Dam we were able to get so close to elephants I could get a full frame of an elephant’s eye and huge eyelash without zooming in very much. I once sat so close to 550 pound silverback gorilla that again, I filled the frame with just his head without zooming in much. In Chobe we had fantastic, beautiful sunsets every night. Unreal memories even all these years later. To this day I tell people those trips were worth every sacrifice made to save the money to go. If you get the chance to go, or can make the opportunity to go, do it, you will never regret it. And you don’t have to be a photography enthusiast to enjoy your trip of a lifetime. One piece of advice though, don’t live the whole trip with your camera at your eye. Take lots of time just sitting back and enjoying the moment, soak it all in. You will get great pictures, don’t worry about that.

Just to say, an amazing TH-cam video - ought to be a TV series - it competes with the presentation and editing of the best of BBC and your presentation is spot on (even with the frown!).

I'm born and raised in South Africa and now live in Calgary. Once Africa is in your soul it never leaves you. The people, the sights, the sounds, just lovely. I go back to photograph the wildlife too. It is my place to unwind and breathe. I see you were lucky enough to have the vehicle to yourself. That is rare and makes working with a lot of equipment next to impossible.

I’m tempted with your trips (as a keen astrophotographer but novice general photographer) and so love being in the bush, with or without camera. This truly is amazing. Something I’ve only ever dreamed about. Ever since I was little, I watched documentaries and shows on animals, my favorites being the ones pertaining to the African wildlife. I’d daydream about being a photographer/videographer, and capturing nature. I always wanted to go on a trip in Africa, like this, when I was a young girl, and now it’s on my list of goals as a grown woman. It’s awesome that you’re getting to experience these things.

Frankly, Simon, I did expect a good video from you about your recent trip to Botswana and wow, did you ever deliver. I can only hope I get some similar images when I head there in just over two weeks. However, what I particularly loved was your interpretation of being “lost in Africa”. Yes, your photographs are lovely (and I’ll bet you’ve got tons more on your hard drives) but it was your tributes to the people that were so heartwarming. Beautifully done. Thank you.

Hi Simon. Just found your channel and have really enjoyed listening to your insights.
I just returned from Botswana as well. It was an incredible experience. Like you, I came away with more than just photos of wildlife. One of the things that amazed me was the amount and variety of wildlife--being able to frame a shot that might include 2 or 3 species of large mammals, crocodiles and several species of birds. It wouldn't necessarily make a great shot, but you could do it. Simply astounding.
My trip was a bit different from yours. I was embedded in a moving tent-based camp run by Johnny Ramsden of Royale Wilderness. Johnny was an excellent guide, finding the animals we wanted to see and using his experience to put us where the animals were going to go so we had the best photo opportunities possible.
We spent time in the Khwai Concession Area, Savuti in Chobe National park and Serondela in the Chobe riverfront area. I think staying in the wilderness that way and driving between the campsites made me feel really connected to and aware of the land and the animals. It was a really special time.
And I came back with some really great photos. Not your quality for sure, but some I'm very happy with.
Looking forward to more great content!

Truly one of the best places in the world for wildlife viewing and photography. Each game drive or river cruise was different and gave us so many unexpected encounters. We were lucky enough to spot a pangolin on the side of a road, though it was fairly hard to photograph in the undergrowth, and a pack of wild dogs with dozens of puppies. Very happy with my results though. I definitely used the tips I’ve learnt from your channel to get some of best photos I’ve ever taken and make the most of an amazing holiday so thank you!

Great video, Simon! This past December, we were in Masai Mara. It was amazing despite not being "peak" season. Like you, we were lost in Africa. Wildlife, people, food, hospitality, and terrific memories.
