    Thanks so much for this. I'm stuck in bed with covid over here in the UK and rediscovering my love of art. I've found an unused pack of colouring pencils, I've got a bottle of zest it from my oil painting days, and I can't wait to get started! Thank you so much. Really clear and generous teaching.

    As always clear presentation and helpful step by step instruction!
    Another approach which I've started to try to avoid chemical solvents is to use water-soluble pencils and just blend with water. Only thing is you need thick paper if you want to use a lot of water, or otherwise on thinner paper you can spend extra preparation time and use an almost dry brush.

    I did try solvent on black watercolour paper and with both caran d ache and polychromos. My first mistake was to put too much solvent on my brush and it did stain the paper and even went through it. The other test was on white watercolour paper with red coloured pencil and I didn't dip my brush in the solvent to see if it would stain the paper again and I did clean my brush on a bit of toilet paper. Most solvents are made for oil paint so I got a windsor and newton solvent with low odor. It does smell but you really must have your nose really close to smell the scent of it. I can't wait to try and make my own coloured pencil drawing with it.

    Hi Kirsty, I'm finding your pencil art tutorials fascinating. I generally use watercolour pencils but am definitely going to try others. My question is: can I blend with solvent on regular paper or does it have to be watercolour or multi media?

    Thank you so much for your awesome videos mate! Any other options on solvents? or something else to use on coloured pencils rather than a solvent to blend? In my country I can't get this one and also I am a bit skeptical about if solvents are safe for our own health, considering that we breath that stuff. Just wandering. Greetings from Chile :)

    • @FernCurtis
      @FernCurtis ปีที่แล้ว

      @Paula Barrientos, I am sorry that I didn’t see your comment until now. Do you having rubbing alcohol in Chili? I haven’t used it a lot, but have a little bit (With the soft core Prismas, haven’t really tried it in a serious way with other pencils) and it works. Not sure if it works to the same level as regular solvent or even if you can keep using it after the first time. It does leave a nice “painted” look, the little bit that I did use it. So, if you have it in your country, that could be an option that is at least healthier. The only other thing is, I don’t know whether it would be considered archival, but if you aren’t selling your work, that may not be an issue.

  • @Silvinka82

    Hey William, could alcohol also be used as a blending medium or does that fall in the same realm as baby oil? Thank you for your videos, I've learned a lot from you. You are a truely gifted teacher!

    • @UnmaskArt

      Alcohol is a safe solvent to use. Personally I have never tried it but It does work. And without the consequences of baby oil.

      It works with all colored pencils.

    Does the softness of the brush's hair/bristles matter? I doubt I'd use a Silver Black Velvet watercolor brush with it, but would, say, the stiff bristles of an oil paintbrush differ from the soft hair of a watercolor brush? It just seems like solvent might weaken the paper and leave it vulnerable to scratching/damaging or even smudging the effect.

    • @UnmaskArt
      @UnmaskArt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I recommend a soft bristle brush, either a round or filbert. It kind of turns the colored pencil into paint. So brush strokes can be visible.

    I have heard of solvents from local brands including keywords terpentine and linseed.. What are this? Are they safe to use. Zest.it and Mona lisa are not available where I live. And gamsol is too expensive.

    I am so confused on which paper to use. Did you say that it would be better to use Watercolor paper in order to use solvents? Or do Mixed Media work as well?

    • @UnmaskArt
      @UnmaskArt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't say either of that. Paper is a personal choice, it has a small effect on how solvents are used. Find the paper you like most, that is always my advice.

    Hi 🙋‍♀️ Well actually, with the Baby Oil, it actually mentions it in the *pamplet* that comes with Faber-Castell Polychromos! I'm like... what?! Cos yeah, I've heard about the yellowing effect that baby oil has and have seen it stain fabrics over the years with this yucky yellow tinge as well. So I was very surprised to see that in the Polychromos pamphlet, and maybe that's one of the places that people are getting it! (???)

      no, but you should be able to find another odorless solvent at any art store that sell oil paint supplies.

    Yo xD BABY OIL? COME ON NOW LOL THATS RIDICULOUS!

  • @cateyes3813
    @cateyes3813 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Oh! Also, if solvents CAN give you some tooth, would you for instance prep an entire page of the drawing with OMS before you even begin to start colouring, if you've bought an inexpensive colouring book that has really thin, poor quality, little tooth etc to make it a much better surface in that entire cheap colouring book to something you can colour a lot better?
    Oh! And for fixatives as well. If you find yourself with a colouring book with unexpectedly dreadful paper, can prepping/spraying fixative across the entire pages of the book before you even start give you a far better surface/paper on which to colour? Ps Hi 👋 from Australia 🇦🇺

    • @UnmaskArt
      @UnmaskArt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No solvents won't "fix" bad paper by letting them take color better. I'd say it's probably more likely to have the opposite effect.
      Now using a textured fixative might be a good idea to test in some poor quality coloring books. Might help them take color. But honestly, i think the best option is to trace the coloring pages to good paper.

    • @cateyes3813
      @cateyes3813 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unmask Art Oh wow! I'd never thought of that! Actually tracing a drawing onto better paper. I normally do a photocopy first before I start doing any colouring, but tracing an actual drawing would allow me to trace it onto the page of a visual arts journal etc. And tracing something would I think give me more knowledge in general re illustrations. Thank you for that suggestion - it's not something I would have thought of 🙏

    I've heard some people say that when you use a solvent that it gives you back the tooth, usually mentioned in the context of regaining the ability to apply another layer - even on a burnished area.
    Have you found that to be the case? #ToothRestoration #UsesForOMSWith ColouredPencilsSlashPastels

    • @UnmaskArt
      @UnmaskArt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can't say it does in general because a lot of it depends on the paper you are using. In some cases it will smooth (taking tooth) and in others it may give you some more space to color on. Too much variability I think to make such a definitive claim.

    • @cateyes3813
      @cateyes3813 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unmask Art I'm only a beginner and I saw someone say that in another tutorial, so I just wanted to ask you about that, as yet I have insufficient knowledge to know either way. Thanks for taking the time to reply 🙏

    I was always suspicious of baby oil because it has to dry before you put your work away, and I don't know if baby oil ever dries. But I didn't know how to choose a solvent. Just grab one from the shelf, I guess. That helps.
