How Many Pokémon Are Eligible For Pokémon Stadium's Pika Cup?

  • The first Pokemon Stadium, or the second if you lived in Japan, had four different cups: The Prime Cup, the Poke Cup, the Petit Cup, and the Pika Cup.
Each of them had different rules: For example, The Petit cup only allows you to use pre-evolved Pokemon under a certain height and weight between the levels of 25-30, and your three selected Pokemon couldn't surpass 80 in total.
But the cup that intrigued me the most has to be the Pika Cup. This one allows you to use any of the (then) 151 Pokemon except Mewtwo and Mew. The catch is that they needed to be any levels from 15-20, and the levels of the three selected Pokemon for a match couldn't surpass 50 when combined.
Now, what makes this an issue is that a lot of Pokemon are typically found in the wild or evolve into their later forms at levels higher than that. It's more challenging to build a tough team when you have to write off many of your go-to powerhouses.
Or that's what you'd assume, but don't write them off just yet. For one thing, you can find a lot of evolved Pokemon in the wild at lower levels than what their pre-evolutions need to obtain to evolve.
This is a subject that has always fascinated me, and even after many years after generation 1's prime, I've wondered just how many Pokemon are eligible for the cup, and that is the topic of this video.
But I'd like to set a number of guidelines before we get started.
Firstly, and most obviously, no alterations through the use of cheat devices will count. I don't think I need to explain why.
Any Pokemon that can be obtained at least level 20 will be considered eligible, but I will try to find them at lower levels if possible.
Only first-generation Pokemon games will be covered. I don't think it would be fair to include generation 2 when it didn't exist at the time, so no breeding from gen 2 and cross-generation trading to get an eligible Snorlax.
Pokemon that can only be obtained at the required levels through the use of glitches won't be counted. Let's try to keep it as close to as intended as possible.
Most of the footage recorded by RichardDS90. If you're used to my standard form of videos and require subtitles, turn on the closed captions function.

6:11 Actually, yes it was a programming issue!
Because of the formula used to calculate Experience Points, Pokémon in the Medium Slow experience group (that is, the majority of Pokémon) would be said to have -54 experience points at Level 1, not 0. The game treated this as over 16 million Experience Points as the experience value was unsigned, so this could be used to jump to level 100. This is also why Gen 2 Eggs are Level 5. The problem was fixed in Gen 3, which used a lookup table that simply set the base Experience Points at Level 1 to 0 rather than -54 like the formula would say.

Yeah because Alakazam isn't busted enough already in gen 1 pika cup, with Persian, Snorlax and Tauros banned, the few things that actually gave Alakazam pause, on top of psychic reducing special (both special attack and special defense) 30% of the time rather then 10% on special defense it does now.
Did I also mention that it has no weaknesses because Ghost is bugged to be immune and only has lick and its only user is poison type anyway and no one learns a bug move until after level 20, and Beedrill aside from being awful is also poison typed and Jolteon doesn't learn pin missile until after level 20 and has a horrid attack stat to use it with in any case.
No wonder I had so few problems beating Pika cup with Starmie and Alakazam back in the day. Would never use either of those busted things now.

  • @Mrperson0
    @Mrperson0 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Even though Tradeback moves are highlighted purple in Pokemon Stadium (which means the game thinks they are illegal), I believe that, for the Pika Cup, allowing all 149 Pokemon was intentional. This game was being made alongside Gen 2 (this is why the Gym Leader Castle gift Pokemon have their catch rates modified so they come with a Normal Box or Gorgeous Box in Gen 2), which introduced a lot of low level mid or high evolution Pokemon (Arbok, Fearow, Gloom, etc.). This is why they decided to just use the "No Mew allowed" rule, since they had no clue what the limit would be with tradebacks.

As cool as that would be, Pokemon Stadium 2 doesn't have the possibilty for anomalous Pokemon since the Petit and Pika Cups are replaced with the Challenge and Little Cups. Little Cup is basically Petit Cup, except every Pokemon is Level 5, which is what Pokemon Eggs hatch in Gens 2 & 3 (the fan-made competitive scene Smogon would adapt this as one of their metagames later), while Challenge Cup gives you a completely random set of Pokemon (minus Legendaries) and it's up to you to make the most use of whatever bizzare set you end up with. So yeah, no format with Level 18 Dragonites in Stadium 2 unfortunately.

Great video though! Just wanna clarify that Lv.2 was the low bar for Pokémon because until Gen III, Lv.1 to Lv.2 was bugged for some Pokémon's experience curves, and gaining a low number of EXP would jump it straight to 100. Despite that they fixed it they just kept the tradition of Wild Pokémon never being below 2 except in very rare circumstances, and they did take an extra generation to change the level of newly hatched Egg Pokémon.

If I remember correctly, the formula for a Pokemon's max HP is (2*Base HP*Level)/100+10+Level, before IVs and EVs are taken into account
Since Diglett's base HP is 10, a Level 1 Diglett with no IVs or EVs in HP would have
    (2*10*1)/100+10+1
    20/100+10+1
    11.2
I believe this rounds down to 11 HP.

Yeah thinking back using Alakazam, it makes me feel dirty because that thing was so busted. It was anyway, but at least Tauros, Snorlax and Persian could do solid damage to it. Too bad all of those were effectively banned. Oh, I also used Gyarados with Dragon Rage for guaranteed 40 damage against things level 15-20. Extra balanced!

A level 1 Diglett has 11 HP, the lowest possible amount barring Shedinja. It may reach 12 HP with high enough IVs and EVs.

For any Safari Zone Pokémon that can be found at the right levels in Red/Blue, you can use the Seafoam Islands Coast Glitch to catch them without having to resort to the Safari Zone mechanics. This should not count as a rule violation because the Pokémon CAN technically be caught without the glitch, the glitch just makes it easier to do.
Sadly, I don't think that's an option in Yellow, so Chansey and Scyther aren't so lucky.

Probably something like: Alakazam lvl 20, Gyarados lvl 20, Starmie lvl 15, Dragonair lvl 15, Raichu lvl 15, Lapras lvl 15. Dragon rage and psychic abuse for days. Raichu, in case someone else has Starmie/Lapras and don't forget it learns surf. You could even make a case for using Kababra AND Alakazam because of how busted Alakazam is but that would mean using a level 19/16/16 set up instead of 20/15/15 which means no Gyarados. You could probably substitute Dugtrio in there over one the level 15's, maybe Lapras if you want electric coverage and less electric weakness, but really dragon rage and psychic abuse is all this format is.
