Tommy Sands a very talented and nice guy! My older friend told me she would hear and see Tommy singing at the Roller Skating Rinks in Houston, Texas in the 1950's. Tommy was up there in the late later 50's as big as Ricky Nelson and the others. Babes in Toyland with Annette Funicello. They sang the theme song from the Haley Mills the Parent Trap. 60 years ago.

Well may the good Lord bless and keep him, what a nice family he was raised in, and really mannerly and charming. Amazing the host mentions that Col. Parker couldn't get him the kind of roles he should have had? So he chucked it out to California. never realized he started so YOUNG< and he had lots of gumption!!....I was told when I was young I had a really good voice but I was always to shy to "show off"...there was a lot of competition back in those days for good looking singers.....Frankie Avalon, Bobby Rydell, Fabian, Paul Anka, Elvis, Bobby Darin, ..just wished he would have maybe had more success in the record business...probably his divorce with Nancy sure didn't help his career...but then again who really knows...must have been really tough having Frank as your father-in-law......oh well he's lived a long life and may God Bless him....thanks for posting!!! Any chance we could get the exact date in 1957 when this was filmed?

I could see why Nancy fell in love with him. Such a nice guy. I wonder how somebody that was born in Chicago had a southern accent. Then I heard he moved to Louisiana. Too bad his life did not turn out well. But I think he was nice enough to overcome it. Even Nancy has nice things to say about him today. He would be 82 years old this year. Nancy would be 79 years old.

Tommy Sands was as big a teenage star could be at the time. And he was a sweet guy, but like a lot of us we get hurt by others and make a lot of mistakes that we've only ourselves to blame. He did marry Nancy Sinatra, but they were both too young for marriage at the time. It's a damn shame that he's not more well known today. I hope he's fairly happy today.

They quickly mentioned Tom Parker, who'd been his manager for several years and would have been a ratings winner if they'd managed to get him on the show, but because they didn't they quickly said his name and whizzed on

Tommy in early 1957 became the first of a long list of Teen Idols in the Rock N Roll periode. He wore the crown of Prince of Teen Idols while Elvis was King of Rock N Roll, but only for a few months, Rick Nelson had his first hit few months later with Teenagers Romance. That song did not have the quality of Teen Age Crush by Tommy but Rick followed with better songs contrary to Tommy. His first movie Sing Boy Sing was a flop with not so great songs. Few singles in 1958-59 I bought and were great but never made the charts: After the Senior Prom was over - Worring Kind - Bigger than Texas. These 3 song should have made Top 10 but did not and I believe that Capital Records and his manager were responsable for that. And of course another bad decision was when Tommy announced he was turning his back on Rock N Roll and would go big band stantard croony adult songs which as a disaster. Bobby Darin made that same announcement at that time but he got away with it.

The reason for the change to big band is the same reason rock stars went into country, career washed up, not selling to the target audience anymore so going with a far easier to crack market, that will still give them a certain level of fame

I remember Tommy Sands, but I was not a fan of his. I preferred singers like Perry Como and Dean Martin. I did not become a teen til 1959 but I was more of a fan of the Warner Brothers stars. I never idolized anyone but I did like a lot of different kinds of music even as a young person. I guess Tommy did not have a very promising career after his divorce from Nancy Sinatra. Guess she "used her boots to "walk all over him. He is now 87 and lives in Studio City. It's interesting that his father who was Jewish and born in Russia, married his mom who was Christian and Tommy was raised in a religious household. I like seeing mixed religions get along well.

I think Sinatra killed his career. When he and Nancy divorced.

    • @captainnice9698

You are correct, Sinatra did kill his career. In fact, he couldn't get a job on the mainland and moved to Hawaii. I remember seeing on one episode of Hawaii 5-0 (starring Jack Lord) in the early 1970's playing...you guess it, a singer
