Astonishing is not strong enough ... it is dumbfounding.
Joe Postove No, they weren't. For some reason I also thought I had seen them on an earlier episode, but I must be mixing them up with another duo. I checked both Gil Fates' appendix of mystery guests and IMDb, and they do not seem to have ever appeared on WML.
The revolving door was like a cunning riddle which fooled the panel. It brought up the interesting question of what defines a machine - does a machine for example have to contain an engine or motor? I'd say no because a bicycle is a machine without either. This show is light entertainment but often delves deeper than that whilst giving an authentic taste of attitudes (particularly towards working women) and of humour (Bennet's laborious puns for example) in those past decades. Well worth watching.
A machine technically moves an object through space using force. So a lever is the simplest of machines; the revolving door is techincally a lever applied sideways. Pushing on the far end makes the center move, and allows passage through the doorway without breaking the air seal. So, yes, a revolving door should have been categorized as a machine.
Nancy Sinatra would file for divorce from Tommy Sands a little more than four months after this appearance, and the divorce would be finalized July 28. Sands claimed the divorce got him blackballed in Hollywood, and he only had one one movie acting appearance afterward (The Violent Ones, 1967), three appearances on Hawaii 5-O (1968-1976), and one on The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries (1978).
Yes, it definitely was Frank who blackballed Sands. Who knows if he would've been a great singer or actor, but I saw his acting performances and he wasn't bad, and he was a decent singer, so he definitely would've gone a bit further if not for sinatra

@@dellaroux Yeah, that's what I figured it was about; that's about the time I remember that 💩 ramping up. I was like 8 then; every evening, every newscast, the war report. X amount of soldiers died today. Years of that. People think kids aren't affected by that; wrong! I was continually saddened hearing about young boys getting killed over there. Later, hearing about the Viet Namese civilians being massacred. I was lucky I didn't turn 17 until it finally ended. Nancy Sinatra also sang the title track to the 5th official James Bond film "You Only Live Twice" (1967). I do not know a single person who hates the title track to that film. Everywhere I have read, there have been nothing but good comments about the song, and Nancy's performance on it. I thought the title track to "Goldfinger" performed by Shirley Bassey would be the most beloved James Bond theme ever, but apparently not.
Listening to it after some years, I had forgotten just how lovely it was. It is hard to choose between this and the Theme from "Goldfinger". I'll just have to go with my gut on this one and stay with Goldfinger for now. Stay tuned for any changes.
Two of my favourites from Nancy were "Sugartown" and another tune she did with Lee Hazlewood called "Some Velvet Morning". The '60s were filled with great music and Nancy's contributions to the scene still shine.
Since today (2/20/19) happens to be Sidney Poitier's 92nd birthday, I'll speculate that if the #1 Hit title song, "To Sir With Love" had come out 1 or 2 years before YOLT, Bond producers might have hired Lulu instead, due to her Brit connection. My favorite 007 titles to sing are those by Tom Jones, Garbage and Adele.
According to Wikipedia "In 1960, Sands married Nancy Sinatra, from whom he was divorced in 1965. At that point in his career, Frank Sinatra had him "blacklisted" in the entertainment industry." Does anyone know about that, how true it is, and if Frank still had that kind of pull in 1965? Tommy is alive, 77 years old, and it appears that indeed he did not do much after the 60's.
I saw that too. Wow. The other interesting bit of trivia from that article is that he co-sang the opening theme from the original Parent Trap movie. That's some legacy!
+Joe Postove , did you look this information up on Wikipedia because I did. From all indications, Tommy Sands' film career was spotty to say the least. By the way, have you seen any of the films Tommy Sands was in? Perhaps he wasn't that talented. : /
I think he was a flash in the pan (a failure after a brief and showy start, or momentary sensation of no real importance). I don't remember where I got the information, Linda, it may have very well have been Wiki. Perhaps he makes his living on the oldies circuit (though one has to doubt how well he would do even there) or maybe Frank threw him some cash to go away.
Joe Postove Nancy asked him to call her on Geraldo Rivera's show so apparently she's not holding a grudge. And that's after he said she was a love child. My guess is that Frank didn't do anything to him. I think the way it works in Hollywood is that if somebody doesn't something FOR you, you've had it.
What speech did President LBJ give on February 28, 1965 that the show had to end earlier? I did a search, but not seeing anything. I am guessing it had to do with Vietnam, but not sure.
To MR.GREENJEANS it is possible SANDS suit was of a teal color:BLUE with a shine of greenish/GREEN with a shine of blueish-because DALY tells SANDS not to worry because SPRING is around the corner!!
Strict dress codes were adhered to by everyone at that time. Nancy was quite right to bring it up & let Tommy explain. Neither would’ve wanted Tommy to have appeared gauche by ignoring the fashion “rules” of the time.
Miss Murphy, the "Newsboy". Made me think of a pop group, who formed in the 1980's, from memory, and is still getting around, named the "Newsboys". Miss Murphy was a young lady, and for the record "The Newsboys" are now older men. Strange days.
Well, that didn't last long. A week after being absent due to the "executive flu", Dorothy is back. They did two shows that night (the one they did before aired on August 1).
There they are. Nancy's father feuded with Dorothy. Yet -- they met here. They shook hands. They exchanged brief pleasantries. Nowadays, TV producers would do that kind of booking and hope that someone would pick up a chair and crack it over the other for the sake of big ratings.
May be dead wrong here, but I think a newspaper with its ink on paper is quite like a photograph with its solutions that leave the image on its paper and not like an automobile at all. A Daly error?
Mr. Sands might have apologized for his suit, but it held up well and if he had wanted to, he could have found a bow tie to wear with it. Movie stars normally wouldn’t bring their entire wardrobe with them to a location shoot even if they were doing something else after a day’s shoot.
President Johnson made a "Statement by the President on the Neighborhood Youth Corps." February 28, 1965 If this is what is going on . . . . why Sunday at almost 11 p.m. on the east coast.?? Did the president assume that since he went to bed around 2 am that everyone else did the same?
soulierinvestments You're right. That does seem a very odd time for the president to give a non-emergency televised speech to the country -- especially one relating to youth! Could he perhaps have been speaking from an event on the West Coast?
Here's the text: www.presidency.ucsb.edu/ws/index.php?pid=27444. Doesn't seem like much of a speech, does it? Seems more like just a written statement. There must have been something else... but I can't find any other reference to any speech made by LBJ on Feb. 28, 1965. That date is notably absent from the list of speeches at the same website: www.presidency.ucsb.edu/medialist.php?presid=36.
From www.tv.com: "The address by President Johnson announced the opening of the 1965 American Red Cross Campaign. On January 28, 1965, LBJ designated the month of March 1965 as Red Cross Month. (Proclamation 3636; 30 F.R. 1109; 3 CFR, 1965 Supp.) His remarks were filmed and recorded in advance for broadcast to the three major networks (ABC, NBC & CBS) immediately preceding local stations' late night newscasts. - drexelgal"
With the mystery guests I do note the panel seems to guess they out pretty quickly. And the only reason I think they do is because I suppose being that the show is in New York. I believe the panel, and especially Kilgallen and Francis who seems to guess correctly most of the time read up on what entertainers are coming or are in New York at the time, put 2 and 2 together and .. bingo. They just seem to get these folks to fast in my opinion. Any theories out there anyone on how they seem to guess these folks so fast?
Yes, it's very irritating when hey do that. Makes it too easy on the panel. IMO only an insecure guest would do this. Like it might be embarrassing to them if they weren't "discovered" by the panel so they make sure that the questioners find them out.
Some years ago, there was some discussion of this on a "stand-alone" clip of this segment. (This was long before Gary began assembling his rich treasure trove of complete episodes; in fact, I think it was during the era in which TH-cam's time limit for the length of clips posted was either 10 or 15 or 20 minutes.) I think that Suzi Murphy wound up as either a bartender at or the proprietress of one of New York City's lesbian bars.
Good singer, decent actor. Very short lived. Soon after this wml episode he and nancy got a divorce. Nancy's father ,Frank Sinatra had Sands blackballed, never to work in the industry again. So thats why you never heard of him
I think Dorothy gave out a pretty fair clue by asking a question and then disqualifying herself. There should be some standard way to do what Dorothy did without giving out clues. Hmmm. The young lady carries her product from place to place AND Dorothy is a newspaper woman. Wheels are turning.
Joe Postove But she didn't sell Dorothy's paper. I think it's more likely Dorothy knew her from her after-hours "clubbing" activities than through her own newspaper work.
But the other panelists only heard that Dorothy was quitting the game, in addition to the details about her carrying her product from place to place. I don't think it mattered at that point or was known what time of day she worked. I think.
Joe Postove Well, it could be that Arlene got so close to guessing the product because she was thinking along the same lines you are. The funny thing is that it would be pure coincidence even if that's true, though, because Dorothy would be just as likely to have seen her if she was going around to different places selling gum and candy, or any other product, for that matter.
Did Frank blame Tommy for the divorce because it does take two to tango and if hs career tanked I think that was very small of Frank who should have been a better man about it
Well pretty obvious how Frank felt. He had Sands blackballed, to never work in the industry again. Sands was doing fine both as singer and actor. His career didn't 'tank' , Sinatra ended it
Tony Randall is great on the panel. Always enjoy him when he is a member. Nancy Sinatra's boots weren't walkin yet when this show aired. Thanks for the video.

This, by the way, I just discovered www.tenchimneys.org/about/about-lynn-alfred ; running quickly down the page and scanning the boxed quotes, it is astonishing to see how highly regarded they were by their peers as actors and as human beings. Astonishing is not strong enough ... it is dumbfounding.
Joe Postove
No, they weren't. For some reason I also thought I had seen them on an earlier episode, but I must be mixing them up with another duo. I checked both Gil Fates' appendix of mystery guests and IMDb, and they do not seem to have ever appeared on WML.
SaveThe TPC I wonder if Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronyn were ever on?

For me, either YOLT or On Her Majesty's Secret Service would have to be considered the "ultimate" James Bond movie. Sorry Sean. :-)
Chris Barat OHMSS is one of my favorite James Bond! :-)
Joe Postove What do you mean didn't do much? He ran a hot dog stand!
When the revolving door guy said he was from Evansville, Indiana I was sure the panel would jump all over Purdue University as a connection.
Unfortunately for me, 'What's My Line?", aired on CBS. At the time, my hometown had only one television station, and it was an NBC affiliate.

Not a very long marriage. Sands' basically career ended once he divorced Nancy (some say Frank had a hand in his demise as a popular singer.)
Mr. Sands might have apologized for his suit, but it held up well and if he had wanted to, he could have found a bow tie to wear with it. Movie stars normally wouldn’t bring their entire wardrobe with them to a location shoot even if they were doing something else after a day’s shoot.

Good work, indeed, Johan Bengtsson!
16:25 Tommy & Nancy are still alive and kicking, however their marriage is not. They got a divorce 5 months after being on this show.
That is certainly one reason. In addition, the panelists often recognized the voices of the mystery guests, and occasionally said so.

Yes, it's very irritating when hey do that. Makes it too easy on the panel. IMO only an insecure guest would do this. Like it might be embarrassing to them if they weren't "discovered" by the panel so they make sure that the questioners find them out.

Does anyone know if the first contestant ever succeeded as an actress? The name sounds familiar.

I think Dorothy gave out a pretty fair clue by asking a question and then disqualifying herself. There should be some standard way to do what Dorothy did without giving out clues. Hmmm. The young lady carries her product from place to place AND Dorothy is a newspaper woman. Wheels are turning.
Joe Postove
But she didn't sell Dorothy's paper.
I think.
Joe Postove
Well, it could be that Arlene got so close to guessing the product because she was thinking along the same lines you are. The funny thing is that it would be pure coincidence even if that's true, though, because Dorothy would be just as likely to have seen her if she was going around to different places selling gum and candy, or any other product, for that matter.
Hmmm she disqualified her self because she recognised the guest! well US sure are have become poorer in quality sense by losing her!
