    I am so happy that someone saved that mini with the overgrown hooves!!! Thank you Dawn!!! By the way Shae I wanted to introduce myself when I saw you in the seating area but would have been a challenge during the auction.

    As to the sad part of auctions. The first auction I ever went to was with a friend who was going to sell her horse and I literally had nightmares for weeks after. It can be VERY hard when you know there's nothing you can do to help. I really like your auction videos because I always learn something. (:

I have a major soft spot for the drafts; Gypsy Vanners, Clydesdale and Belgians are my favorites .

    I agree with you about selling your horse at auction. I am originally from Michigan (grew up north of Grand Rapids, graduated from MSU). I know this area/auction well. I also know that horses from Amish farms can be dumped at auction after they are worn out from the hard work they perform their entire life. These places are not places for the kind hearted! Auctions are where you can find horses whose owners would rather send their ill/injured/older horse through an auction to make a last few bucks after they are no longer useful to them. Often this is instead of doing the humane thing and putting the horse down. And here their horse is at a high risk of it being sold & loaded on a kill buyer’s truck to be sent to slaughter in Canada or Mexico.
    I live in Georgia now and have volunteered at a nearby horse rescue for 6-1/2 years and I also now own 3 myself. But the last one I purposefully purchased at auction (9/2019) with the goal of saving a thin horse who would likely be out on that kill buyers truck that was parked outside.
    After months of good mash and gentle care my boy, Spartan (after my MSU Spartans) turned out to be a beautiful dark bay who’s DNA determined him to be a Tennessee Walker. But I totally understand what you mean when you say how you want to save every one of them. That is exactly the way I would be if I went to auctions regularly. So sad…

    • @freespiritequestrian
      @freespiritequestrian  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This was so well said! Thank you! Your boy sounds amazing. Thank you for giving him such good care. That’s so cool you’re from Michigan. I wish we could save them ALL. ❤️

      I guess I don't understand the logic in this, so instead of putting them down they end up on the killers trailer? First of all, what is the real difference if they kill it or the "killers" kill it?. Second, it costs a lot of money to put a horse down and have the carcass taken care of afterwards (speaking form experience more than once!) and maybe some people just can't afford it. There are many people for whatever reason can no longer keep their horse,
      and have not had any luck selling it on their own, so last resort is the auction. Not every auction seller is as heartless as you make them sound. Many are heart broken.

    • @lindasartore3303
      @lindasartore3303 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mirage790 have you ever seen/heard how horses are treated/transported after purchased by a kill buyer? It is deplorable! Anyone who has loved a horse owes it to that horse to find a way, whether a quick bullet to the head, to end the horse’s life rather than subject them to the horror of kill buyer purchasing or slaughter itself.

    • @lindasartore3303
      @lindasartore3303 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dealing with end of life expenses are part of expenses a horse owner assumes when deciding to own a horse. If the cost of humanely ending their beloved horse’s life then perhaps they should never decide to get that horse in the first place.
      You happen to be replying to me the day after I had to put down that sweet horse I bought at auction 3 years ago. He was my heart horse, and still looked so healthy and beautiful but he had suffered with lameness for too long as we tried different ways to cure him to no avail. Sending him to auction would have provided money back to me because of how he looked and how much the kill buyer could get at slaughter. But I loved this boy and I have always known if there came a time when there was no longer hope for him to enjoy his life that I would NEVER take him back to the auction. That time came yesterday and it was one of the hardest days of my life, but I have peace knowing he went quickly at the hands of someone who provided him with dignity, tenderness, and love.

Idk how you handle going to auction, I am a huge rescue advocate and I’m glad you get horses from auction and understand you can’t same them all! I too wish I could be so rich that I could just save as many as possible. I don’t own any horses, but I ride and volunteer at a local stable & that has to be enough for now! But, my goal is one day to rescue some horses and give them a good life and love them forever. I’m glad you can do that and I enjoy watching you and others who do. My heart is w all the horses at this auction I hope they are all saved!!! And just a note, that girl who was flipping over that poor horse…wtf???? Seriously 🤬

    Thank you for the insight and allowing us to go see some horses with you. I am curious: why would an owner take their horse to an auction instead of selling them through horse websites? I would be nervous selling my horse to someone I haven’t met.

    • @freespiritequestrian
      @freespiritequestrian  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Of course! A few reasons. Firstly, many of the horses being sold here are just horse traders who picked up several horses the day before trying to sell at auction to make a quick buck. Another reason is some people don’t want to deal with people wasting their time when it comes to private sale. I personally wouldn’t sell at an auction (obviously) but to each their own. Many people don’t care about a good home, they just want money.

He had been so messed up he wasn't even safe to ride, but hours and months of work made him my buddy. He was still onery, hated the arena but on trails I trusted him with my life. On the ground he's was great. He would go anywhere I pointed him. Bridges, mud, load in any trailer. Helped many horses over scarey bridges and into trailers. We covered literally thousands of miles of trails. Got him when he was 6 and lost him to cancer at 27. Also have a mini I rescued when he was 1 and he is now 31 and going strong. Moved both of them with me from Georgia to ok.

    I wish humane groups could do for horses what has been done for dogs in kill shelters by moving them to other parts of the country that value them more. I don't even know where that place would be. It is so sad to see the terrible conditions some of those beautiful horses are in. Thanks for showing us even tho it breaks our hearts. 🥺

      Of course I do! Why do you think I didn’t buy one? I don’t support that at all. They are also cute, and it’s not the puppy’s fault. Are you saying you wouldn’t pet a cute puppy because they came from a puppy mill? How about all the dogs at shelters? Where do you think a majority of them come from? Puppy mills. I can’t state every thought I have on every video, there wouldn’t be enough time lol.

    Slaughter buyers take these poor horses on trucks to meat factories in Mexico. No horse owner should ever be near one of these garbage meat auctions.

    • @freespiritequestrian
      @freespiritequestrian  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      These horse don’t go directly to slaughter, they are usually flipped or taken to “kill pen” which then they are basically just sold to someone else who buys them. Yes, some do unfortunately get on that truck to Mexico or Canada but it’s not AS common as you’re thinking. Also, horse owners shouldn’t be near these auctions? Yes they should, so they can buy and save some of these animals if they have the means to.
