I really want something like that. I got a smart watch specifically so I can quickly check notifications at work (or really whenever) without having to take out my phone. I'd love to do that without even needing to look at my risk. Additionally, it has some really interesting applications. Imagine a GPS system, but it actually shows the route in AR. No longer will you miss your turn because the GPS was too slow, you can just see the arrow on the road. It could also increase safety if it can connect to your car's cameras (if it has them). Then there's also the far future where AR is used everywhere in the real world and not having glasses like that will basically make you "blind" in a sense.
But anyway, there's a lot this sort of technology could be used for and I'm excited for it. I'm just not $3.5k excited, especially when it's an uncomfortable headset and not glasses. Though a high quality headset would be nice for a theater mode at the very least (though again, not for $3.5k).
Convenience is my biggest issue with any headset though. I have the Quest 2 and it always sits in front of my on my desk. I could use it whenever, but I rarely feel like it. It's such a hassle to put on and wear, especially because I have longer hair. Then there's the weight of it and everything. VR is fun when I get into it, but I'd often rather just play a normal PC game. Which reminds me that AR glasses would be great for showing multiple displays for normal convenient PC usage.
The more I watch this video, the more things I can think of. Like auto-translation that shows subtitles above people's heads like in Cyberpunk 2077.

The only good reason to protect the front of the headset over the inside is that the tracking cameras are located there, so if the glass gets scuffed or scratched then there would be tracking errors. But that wouldn't even be a problem if the whole front wasn't glass to begin with.

    • @Skullet

It's also the part that's most likely to get scratched as it's outward facing. I also found that it presses against my forehead a lot while it does not even touch my cheeks on the bottom if I wear it flat like this, (that was my first try). And I quickly changed my approach to adjust the angle of the unit so it cups my face evenly first and then move the back strap to the resulting position, in my case it would look on the side about a 20-30 degrees incline, and it feels really comfortable for me, and I don't feel front heavy because the strap is holding onto the upper back portion of my head.

Regardless of what development costs, material costs, labor costs, packaging and shipping, etc. are incurred by Apple, when consumers talk about something being "overpriced" they only care about the price paid vs. the return value to the user. The Vision Pro is undoubtedly amazing as an example of bleeding edge technology or as a fashion statement. It's new and exciting but it isn't particularly more useful than what's already here. It isn't a better laptop, phone, or tablet. It isn't even, for some use cases like games, the best VR or AR headset. From that perspective, it's overpriced.

Apple very strangely plays into the audience that subconsciously prefer to be told exactly how to use something with no straying at all.

And as far as I can tell, there's no way to do something similar on the Vision Pro, so Apple definitely got your data, which they might not sell, but still use internally. So I'd argue that Vision Pro owners pay with their data more than I am.

@@enzomercier2789 yeaaaaaaa good luck until it bricks itself somehow unless you connect it back to the internet to install a patch.
Also like, every company collects your data and uses it internally. If you have ever used a credit card anywhere, the places you swipe are keeping track of you and your purchases via the card number, as well as your credit card company themselves keeping track. It’s how they know to offer you enticing deals and what things you might grab should they have a sale on them. The problem is not really the data collection for internal use, you’re never escaping that, it’s been in play since the 1990s. The problem is more the cybersecurity of those places keeping your data, and when they put your data up for sale to the general market as a course of business.
