FINALLY! A 911 restomod that appeals to me. It's not trying to remove its 911-isms, meaningfully refreshed interior touch points andmaking the exterior changes functional but subtle 👌Also nice to see the narrow body get some love)
I have an odd personal connection with this car. This builder built virtually the same car as my NSX but in a 993 chassis. Everything down to the same power-to-weight ratio, same 6spd ratio+wavetrac, same recaro seats, and many other subtle touches. It was oddly cool and can confirm the formula works!
I can remember reading HC learning to drift in a 993 20 odd years ago.... Absolutely love how he articulately dissects the driving experience and shares it in such valuable minute detail. Its a real skill that had been honed over time. Can't wait to see where HC will be in another 20 years, one things for sure, I will enjoy the ride!
Always nice when you upgrade and fine tune such an icon. Nevertheless it's hard to understand how they can justify a request of 400.000£ . Singer is honestly something different.(if they'll ever decide to approach also 993 ) Kaege too.
Lovely thing, I’d still take a RUF scr personally, just the small matter of winning big on the lottery and then that preference would actually have some relevance.
Thats lovely but speaking as a woman who has drove a real 1973 Porsche 911 2.7 RS , you will never ever experience a car that much fun ever again , It is the best track car I've drove , the best road car for village lanes I've drove , problem is I could not afford it even 20 years ago it cost over £100 grand , now its 10 times that amount , I drove also an Original Porsche 911 Turbo from the late 70s and honestly i did not enjoy it as much , why ? Because 2 things first huge turbo lag , literally it would take like 10 seconds before that turbo kicks in if you were in the wrong gear and revs were too low and secondly it weighed a lot more than the 911 RS and was very very scary in tight corners as the back end would have a bad habit of wanting to step out , anyway Amazing review glad to see a Restored modern classic 911.
I bought my 964 from Paul and even my standard car was very well prepared, so if you can’t afford the clubsports I’d recommend checking out the rest of his stock.
Of all the Porsche restomods, I feel like this 993R by Paul Stephens captures the essence the best. At least for my tastes. I’d have a very hard time deciding between this 993R and the 1965 911 SWB by Sports Purpose. Two great cars at opposite ends of the air-cooled 911 spectrum.
4:11 This, ladies and gents, perfectly explains the level of how connected a true petrol head can become to some cars. 😅👌 This is my kind of tuning of older cars! Kinda OEM + , pretty original looking, but better. Looks and performance wise. No doubt in my mind i would 100% rather pay 400k for this than a modern day Ferrari or whatever, if i ever would be filthy rich that is ofc. Great video as always from you guys! 👍
@Carfection - Henry, correct me if I'm wrong... But, no matter how many times you say "Prototipo" (Momo) in this video, that wheel will never become one! 😜 I mean, sure the owner could have had it re-trimmed to add the 'Stripe' that a 'Prototipo' doesn't usually sport in stock form... However, the dish on that wheel leads me to believe it is much more likely the Momo Mod.07 wheel. I figure you have driven enough cool Porsches to have seen plenty of both options by now.. Apart from that, beautiful review of a really nice crafted Porsche! Thank you for sharing it and all the exquisite details with us. 👍
You can have the car, yet another recipe for a 911 curry. I did enjoy the commentary. Henry seems to have left the news anchor voice behind and returned to the way he used to present and sounds like he is sharing not telling. Very much enjoy listening to that.
The thing is, there are so many 911s out there (at least, in comparison to other legendary-status sports cars) that at the end of the day, unless you're starting with a super rare spec, it's not like you're losing some super valuable historical artifact. I mean, just look at the highest-profile restomodder, Singer. How many Singers have been made, a few dozen? And look how many 964s were made in total by Porsche. Frankly, I love the 964, but a base one in the condition most are in when they're sent to Singer isn't really anything worth keeping stock.
@@emailandydean Lol, nobody buys air-cooled Porsches on Autotrader. Don't believe me, just look at the production numbers. Porsche made 62k 964s in total, including over 18k C2 coupes and 13k C4 coupes. It's fair to assume that 90% of those are still driving because they get babied, they hold their value, and they don't rust badly. That's at least 27k coupes still out there, by my count. It's not a rare car. Obviously a Camry is more common, but that's apples to oranges. For the kind of car it is, that's a pretty decent number. You take one and restomod it, and it's not like you're modifying a 1 of 1000 car, which is my point. For every restomodded 964, there are probably a hundred stock 964 coupes.
I love most of them. This one, the Singers, 911Rennsport, Emory's 911K... Not a big fan of the Gunther Werks, even if I admit it is apiece of engineering. I wonder when do you expect to check and drive the Tuthill Porsche 911K? What a specification and what a beauty.
The front rounded-square air intakes, and the insert panel they sit in, seem to have sharper radius corners than Porsche would have provided. Small thing, sure, but if everything is in the details...
Hasn't seen much from carfection lately hope to see more again. I would still get the new Gunther werks tornado or a singer over this. Not that this isn't nice
I was thinking the same thing. There seem to be quite a few similarities between the two: Recaros, basic interior, thinner glass, aluminium bonnet, extra 200 cc etc. When it comes to resale time I suspect that the RS would be a lot cheaper to have owned, plus the RS has (dreamy) split rim Speedlines.
Design wise this is a little bit better than the usual 993 restmods but I'm still waiting for Singer quality on a 993. If I'm ever rich enough I think this is a job for Retropower
The Singers of the 911 world always gave me weird vibes. Like yes, it IS the perfect 911 to me, at least on paper. I should love it, right? But it also feels a bit wrong to me in a way. It's too idealistic and I feel like it almost compromises the charm of the 911. In my mind, the perfect 911 build would be a combo of various 80s/90s parts. Maybe a 964 Turbo widebody shell (but without the wing) with a built 3.8L 993 RS motor, 6-speed RWD gearbox with the LSD, 964 RS seats, 968 CS steering wheel, a short-throw shifter, 993 Turbo brakes, and BBS LMs. Oh, and rotate the gauges, but keep the numbers pointing the wrong way. Now to find $300k to make it happen...
Nice review. I also am not generally keen on resto-mod 911's. However the subtle design changes here along with a duck-tail really do appeal to me. Love the interior, looks perfect. I don't mind the wheels at all, certainly many resto mods (other than Ruf) have cocked up the wheel choices badly. As this is a street car, the little ear mirrors are not useful in real world suburban driving. I think the period correct aero mirrors would look just fine. The exhaust tip design should be thought through and kept near to the 1995 993 oval or the later 96-98 squarish style.
I hope these wheels are on it just because it's a development vehicle. Judging this against the other Resto-engineered 911s being manufactured this seems to come up short.
Beautiful car only things I dislike are the duck tail spoiler, the wheels and the front spoiler. That said one can’t make everyone happy, so in light of that I’ll keep mine as is😎 and admire this lovely effort from PS. 👌🏿
I read about this in EVO magazine and it said cost minimum £100,000 plus a 993 carrera? Which is about 70 or 80 grand. So how come its jumped to £400,000? I mean its academic anyway as i can't even afford the normal 993 carrera but I'm just surprised by the price jump.
Fantastic car! So subtle and tasteful. Beats the riced-out Gunter by a mile. Not sure I would call this a Restomod, though. More like a hot-rodded 993. Except for the suspension pretty much all stuff that could get and was done in period. Now, could you build this for less than 400k? Only if you do it all yourself. You might be able to find a Porsche garage who could do the WORK for maybe 150-200k, but then you would spend the time equivalent of 200k on managing said work/specifing the details, least you get only half your vision. Anybody who ever had a custom car/bike built will be able to attest to that.

Honest question. Why do people love air cooled porsches? If they were superior, they wouldn’t have switched to water cooled.
