thats why i love hot rod unlimited keep up the good work people thanks for showing folks that the hot rod lifestyle is more than muscle heads in muscle cars.
Always thought one of these would be the ultimate urban/suburban vehicle. Soaking up potholes and brushes with curbs to fire-road blasting, these things seem damn near perfect!!
this is great..ive seen these buggys my whole life, and never really cared that much about them..now knowing the history behind it, i will sure pay a lot more attention when i see one
I missed this one somehow! I love the Manx! I would love to build one with my kids (9,11,and 14). They love watching stuff like this, Roadkill, and MCM and helping me wrench on my grandfather's Dakota Sport. (My 9 year old replaced the wiper bushing and was SO proud watching the arms under the cowling crank!). Thanks for this one, Elana. It's the kind of video that makes me glad I subbed to MT.
-> They also poked fun at Speed Buggy on an episode of Futurama, by melting down Speedy Buggy & Speedy Racer & a couple other old cartoon cars. It was funny. They reversed Speed Buggy’s colors (Red/Yellow - I assume to avoid paying the copyright fees).
Me and my brother and dad built a carshow meyers manx, we now have a second were working on not for show, but for speed. They have got to be one of the funnest car builds/restoration projects ever.
These things look like so much fun, I knew somebody who had one back in the day (doubt it was a Manx, though), he still has it, I think I'm making progress on taking it off his hands.
This was a really great video, I had no idea the Meyers mynx had so much history! And the man himself seems like a really loveable guy, if I ever get the funds to build one, no knock offs. I'm buying direct from this man.
Great, great video. My father built a 'Buggy before I was born, and kept it in to my 20s. I don't know what brand it was, all I know is it had a Beetle engine (as did most), with individual brake handles for the rear wheels. Ridiculous fun, that car - I'll always remember it. I'd love to build my own, with a Subaru engine, when I have time, money and most importantly, space to do it!
Its good to see the masses getting to know the stuff us "Muscle car" guys have been into for years. I use to get the same excitement from seeing a new issue of Hot Rod or Car Craft magazine as I do now a new HR Unlimited or Road Kill episode.
Bruce Meyers and his Family lived in Detroit MI .. His Father worked at Ford.. they moved to CA and his FAther was the first Ford Dealer in CA.. R.I.P. Bruce
That sounds great. You should send photos to Bruce Meyers at meyersmanx dot-com. He told us he really likes hearing about families building the cars together. Elana
It really surprised and pleased me to see you guys doing a special on the Meyer's Manx. I figured it would be too weird, too old, and too low-performance for anyone other than a dedicated Volkswagen nerd to care about.
It’s funny how when it showed Bruce driving the Car in his Hoodie, he straight up reminds me of my grandpa. 1: his first name is Bruce 2:He wears a gray hoodie
Watching this has made me realize why the Automotive industry in Australia is the way it is. In Australia we have this mentality of if it's broke just buy a new one. But as car manufacturers in Australia are seeing, people are moving to manufacturers that supply vehicles that won't die on the side of the road. It eliminates aftermarket parts manufacturers, and companies that make crap. In a way that is sad because will will live in a world where vehicles will lack any personality or soul or make a person feel like they have achieved something by owning a custom vehicle. We are slowly being sterilized.
In 1976 a friend of mine traded a restored 1954 Chevy station wagon to Bruce Meyers for a Meyers Tow'd. He then sold it to my father in law. A couple yrs later, he noticed the vin number 000000001! He offered me a 59 Plymouth w/40,000 miles ,or the Tow'd I took the Plymouth. I have no Idea where the Tow'd is today...
Found a beetle for $750 an hour away from me. heads up though, make sure is not a super beetle. otherwise you'll need to swap front suspension to make it work.
They need to start building monocoques again those are by far my favorite with the flat hood. and what with beetles becoming more of collector cars with each passing year, the hobby would benefit from not having to chop up a bug to make a buggy.
I think Mr. Meyers is a very modest man. Companies spend millions designing cars that look half as good as what he worked out in his shed.
He's brilliant and delightful. We had a great time doing this video.
Elana
Rest In Peace, Mr. Meyers. Thank you for sharing so many smiles!
God bless you Bruce. And thank you. You will be missed.
Within the first 30 seconds was enough for me to hit the like button. Never happened that before. Such a committed man
Bruce Meyer: The Inventor of the Dune Buggy . He´s a real legend in the aircooled VW World

papoose
thank you so much for pure engine sound at the end!
There were so many dune buggies in pop culture. Speed Buggy and the Krofft Supershow are just two we can think of.
Elana

How cool would it be to be that guy? Really... Wow. Cheers to you Mr. Meyers, you have lived well Sir.
blueslove61 Is he still alive, or did he recently die of old age ?
I did actually get to drive the Dual Sport after we were done shooting. Fun!
Elana

Motor trend always amazes me with their informative and enjoyable videos.
Thanks MotorTrend, although more roadkill would be awesome!
This was a really great video, I had no idea the Meyers mynx had so much history! And the man himself seems like a really loveable guy, if I ever get the funds to build one, no knock offs. I'm buying direct from this man.
This is my spotlight car in Forza, I absolutely love this little car as it's really fun to drive.
Excellent video! The Meyers Manx is a sharp looking vehicle!
Thank u for giving the world 1 of its greatest pleasures ....even if u didn't get rich from it

Elana
I salute you, Bruce Meyers.
u know when u have made it in the car world, when Hot Wheels make a model of your car.

The Grand Theft Auto games made their own version too.

I would love to have that Meyer manx dune buggy from 1960 to 1964
That sounds great. You should send photos to Bruce Meyers at meyersmanx dot-com. He told us he really likes hearing about families building the cars together.
Elana
I have always been a fan of Air Cooled VWs, they actually got me started working on cars, the Manx is a very cool vehicle!
I built a 2380 scat based manx once very sick with the 3 4 gear change in trans. I would love to build one with a 1776 if i could find one.

It’s funny how when it showed Bruce driving the Car in his Hoodie, he straight up reminds me of my grandpa. 1: his first name is Bruce 2:He wears a gray hoodie
it needs a STAN MEYER water powered motor in it!

I contacted Jessi a while back about doing a feature on my buggy. It's for sale and I would love the exposure. Here is the link

What an awesome guy, starts a revolution, gets snuffed out by capitalism and still keeps the cool calm fun loving demeanor in his old age.

They need to start building monocoques again those are by far my favorite with the flat hood. and what with beetles becoming more of collector cars with each passing year, the hobby would benefit from not having to chop up a bug to make a buggy.
hell yeah, i've been playing that a lot the last few days
Elana Scherr should drive the Dune Buggy!!
Better than a dam golf cart video like Auto car
"Tomorrow is not as important as Tomorrow's surf." HA!!
My eyes kept going from left to right at the very end
I'm gonna be the first person to put some doors on this thing, and make it a road-legal closed vehicle. Sound system and everything.
cybertree how's that going lol
cybertree it's road legal as is.
