    I had this leak on my Ram CV, and had to replace the cover with new. The first time I resealed it, and it started to leak again in the same area within about 7 months or so. Replaced with a new cover, and been good ever since (4 years and counting).

    Absolute best video for the timing cover. I've had to remove mine 4 times in one week due to leaks. The service manual says to apply a 1-3mm bead of 3 bond but obviously, that is not enough, I see you applied close to 6mm as well as on the bottom of the cover and the upper oil pan lip. That is the way to go. Also applying to the cylinder head T joints. Also thank you for saying 198 ft lbs for the dampener. Using an analog angle gauge is a nightmare.

    For anyone who needs a tip on getting the Balancer on and off: Harbor Freight sells a huge 36" prybar. I used it on my Jeep with the 3.6 you put the curved end into the harmonic balancer open slots. Worked great and was able to torque to 30 lbs and then + 105 degrees. Part 68139

    Man, amazing job.. Very informative... You didn't even have to swear or yell at the engine, lol...i never seem to be able to keep from mashing my fingers and yelling at it. Thanks for putting that video together.

    I've done a few of them... notice where they are all leaking... right where the head gasket is. If you look closer, you will notice that the head gasket is too long ...1/16 of an inch. And when the front cover is in place, it doesn't allow a good surface contact

    ive been a mechanic since 1980 but so glad mine was covered under my extended warrenty....wow great video...its twelve hours quoted labor at the dealership so not for the average person to attempt i dont think

    Wow that's a lot of work I'm glad my 3.6l is in a ram 1500, remove intake filter tube and the cover is right there.

      You still have to remove the valve covers, power steering, and AC

    Great tutorial! Extremely helpful for getting in and replacing one of the timing chain tensioners after finding the little plastic arms in the oil pan (who knows how long ago they broke off). Thanks for creating such a helpful video!

      Ouch, you lucky the chain didn’t skip on you. That would be a lot more involved work to replace the head or bend valves!

      Fortunately the tensioner was still holding the chain tight, despite the missing plastic arms, but I figured it should be replaced before it fails, which would do exactly what you describe. That becomes a pretty major engine job at that point.

      Chris, i just stumbled across some plastic in my pan when changing my oil pump. motor still runs as it should but throwing a p0016 was yours also throwing a code with broken plastic tensioner guides?

      Ours wasn't throwing a code at the time. We had a small leak from the upper pan and found the arms when we dropped the pan.

      If using the Mopar 3-bond, couple hours at room temps are enough. I did a few oil pans with less then 1hr cure time and no leaks! I prefer to wait at least couple hrs or overnight if possible though to be safe

    what a great video - thanks so much - i ve read some conflicting posts and comments -does the oil pan have to come to remove timing case cover , or can i remove the bolts from under the car - i didnt see it on the video

    Would you replace the water pump on this job? I have a 2015 Ram 1500, and figure it may well be worth replacing the water pump, Thermostat ? Also thinking I have to drop the oil pan on the ram 1500? Of does the cover come off the same as this one? I have to pull Bank 1 cylinder head.

      I honestly don’t remember changing a water pump on a 3.6 (I guess they are bulletproof) not like on Hemi’s. :-)
      Experienced mechanic can replace the head without touching the timing cover and save tons of labor. Making sure the timing is set correctly and marking the crank pulley to the case helps.

      For those who still would like a reply to the question about the Oil pan. The answer is No, you do not have to drop the oil pan on a Ram 1500 3.6. The set up is very similar to this one.

    In a Dealership those mechanic’s need to do the job into the allowed time paid under warranty by the constructor , in this case jeep under Stellantis corp

      It took me 6 hrs with test drive and recording. That price seems ok for a dealership. Mopar gaskets sold by dealerships is really high, labor rate can be as high as $160/hr in major cities.

    Why remove the valve covers? What am I missing - I thought they might be hiding a fastener, but it does not appear to do so.

      Because the cover sits flush with the head and needs to be re sealed.

    I had the dealership replace left cylinder head on my 2011 TC due to bad valve seats 8 months past the extended warranty. They did the short cut where you don't have to remove the TC cover but charged me full labor 20.5 hours though ALLDATA shows 15 hours. Then I started noticing oil on the AC compressor bent manifold brackets harness undone dipstick tube bent and many other issues. I took it back and they said the right valve cover and TC was leaking they wanted 2600.00 I argued they should have done this when they did the cylinder head and they use ALLDATA for labor and procedures that shows to replace these things. Since they charged me labor for something they didn't do they agreed to do it for parts and one hour labor. They did a 12 hour job in 3 hours and used a electric socket wrench on everything even on the intake manifold that is torqued to 71 inch pounds. They also used some superglue on the Make Up Air Hose they broke ripping it off. It appears the cover possibly is still leaking. How can I trust the torqued the head down properly when the rest of the work was sloppy.

      if internal gaskets are bad you will most likely see coolant in your oil.

      @drep.4020 sounds like you might be having the same issue I had. Chasing an overheating issue for years for me..I finally did a combustion test on the radiator and sure enough there were exhaust gasses in coolant= destroyed cylinder head gaskets...

      @JaimeMaldonado10472 quite possibly I had initially replaced my thermostat, coolant reservoir, several flushes, bypass the heater core, replaced the engine oil cooler (it was leaking)with 1 that came with an aluminum base instead. No leaks after the pressure test. But there were sand like particles in the coolant reservoir which was new and had several flushes. I took it to a shop after exhausting everything. The mechanic thought maybe the sand particles could of been from a "spin wheel" in the water pump that could be damage and would cause overheating. I replaced the water pump still overheating and the old pumps "spin wheel" was fine so I'm not sure what causes me to see sand/crystal like particles at the bottom of the reservoir. Maybe I have a clog. The engine isn't shaking, there is no white smoke from the tailpipes, did the combustion test, bled and burped, no oil in the coolant, no coolant in the oil lipstick. However when my personal mechanic came back to town he open the oil cap and there was some sludge like there. I read short trips could cause building up there not necessarily meaning blown heads and all my trips were 10m or less. He said it could be the timing cover gasket leaking coolant as well. But now when he ran a pressure test he removed the oil cap and said blown heads. But I'm like if the gasket is leaking from the timing cover wouldn't that negate the pressure test? Sorry for the book I've been chasing as well going on 3 months now

      @drep.4020 if you've mixed regular coolant with mopar HOAT, that is your sludge...ask me how I know...also if you start the Jeep using the funnel in the radiator and see a nice steady flow of tiny bubbles, that's the head gasket...

    And just think of how much work could have been saved with an access cover with a gasket to replace tensioner on timing chain. Lol Im so tired of working on cars! 😂
