  • Every time I re-caulked my bathtub or put some caulking around my trims, I ended up with lots of caulking left in the tube when the project was done.
To save that leftover caulking for future projects, I sealed the tube in these ways.
Wipe the nozzle down with a rag to remove any sealant residue. For oil-based silicone, mineral spirits or paint thinner was needed to do the cleanup.
    1. I use the nozzle cap and wrap it tight with electrical tape.
    2. If nozzle cap is not available, try wire nut. Screw a wire nut onto the end of the tube to create a caulk plug and wrap it tight with electrical tape. Wire nuts come in a range of sizes, so no matter how wide the opening of the caulking tube is, it is easy to find a wire nut that will seal the opening.
    3. For small opening, seal the nozzle with a long screw. Screw it into the open end of the caulking tube. Later, to use the caulk, just unscrewing the screw.
    4. For large cut in the caulk cartridge nozzle, I used glue gun to seal it. This creates the best seal but needs some effort to remove the glue.
Later to reuse the caulk, if the caulking dries out or hardens in the neck of the tube, grab a flat-head screwdriver to knock the dry silicone out.
The fact is that once a caulk tube opened, it's not possible to store it for long. In general, silicone caulk has a one-year shelf life, so it's important to test the caulk before starting a new project. To test the caulk, squeeze out a small bead and wait for about 20 minutes then check to see if caulk has formed a skin.
