    When Emily said "Father" instead of "Grandfather", that pretty much said it all. I think Emily was grooming Rory to be the daughter that she didn't have with Lorelai.

    • @lexi219
      @lexi219 6 ปีที่แล้ว +175

      Well yeah, of course she was. Lorelai always treated her mother like she was ridiculous, ran away as a teen, and completely shut Emily out of her life for 15 years. Emily didn't even get to know her granddaughter until she was almost grown, and even then, Lorelai only came to them because she wanted something. When Rory came to them wanting to stay at the mansion and work with Emily's organizations, she saw an opportunity to have that mother-daughter relationship that she Lorelai refused to give her.

      @@iamsultana The person is wrong about everything. Emily knew very well about Rory, since Lorelai was still with her parents when she was born. She didn't sut them out completely, she made the occasional call, even if she didn't like it.
      You're right, though. Lorelai had every right to decide how to decide how to live her life and actually had a good one that Emily was never able to acknowledge because it's not what SHE wanted. I like Emily, but I find it ridiculous that people really try to pretend she had any right to control Lorelai

      of course she did, and in her true Emily way she was doing same mistakes she did with Lorelai, being to controlling and suffocating her. But Rory was a spoiled brat too... screaming about independence and doing things her own way because she is adult now, while leaving in her rich grandma's fancy pool house doing nothing and being financed by her grandparents and rich boyfriend and being ungrateful. they were both in the wrong and they both had their points of view. that is the beauty of this show. just like it is in real life :)

    See, I think she knew but she didn't know at the same time. So many times, Lorelai's tried to explain how they are and Rory's just passed off as "Oh, you'll work it out" or "you"re exaggerating" or "you shouldn't have handled it that way." Moving in with them and seeing how they can be, I think, is what REALLY made her understand why Lorelai can't always get along with her and why she distanced herself in the early years. I just don't think she really got it until she lived with them.

    Both Emily/Richard and Rory are at fault in this situation. Lorelai was right, she knew her daughter and knew what it would take for Rory to finally come to her senses. Richard and Emily only aided in Rory's "misbehaviour" because they pushed her into the mould that they wanted Lorelai to become; a woman of high social standards. I think Emily's frustration is due to Lorelai being right, also seeing how much of Lorelai's personality traits are in Rory. As for Rory, dropping out of Yale ceased her work ethic. Her initial plan to hide behind her grandparents and their wealth were uncalled for.

It doesn't matter how controlling they are, they are still her grandparents and they still were nice enough to give her some shelter while she was having her ridiculous fit. Well, obviously she didn't know. Rory saw mostly a very good side of her grandparents, she had some distance from them. And, she was such a 'good kid' that she didn't aggravate them most of the time. She only knew what she'd heard from her mother, and what she'd seen of Lorelai and Emily's interactions- and Lorelai was definitely not innocent in provocating those, lol. Not to mention that she's 21, controlling behaviour from family isn't condoned as much. Living with someone full-time is very different from seeing them once a week for a few hours. While it was nice of her grandparents to take her in, it did not give them the right to run her life. If they didn't agree with her lifestyle they could ask her to leave. Honestly she was being very responsible, i.e. running this event as she said she would, she just wasn't telling her grandma her every move and if I remember correctly had a boy over late. The only person who was really in the right of this situation was Lorelai. She went to her parents and tried to stop all of this and they stabbed her in the back in favor of allowing Rory to have her little episode for an entire semester of Yale. THAT is where Emily and Richard went wrong, by not supporting Lorelai. Here? No. Rory had this coming. She was flat-out terrible in the first half of the sixth season. She clearly has a thin skin by getting THAT upset over what Logan's father said to her in spite of the heaps of praise literally everyone else in the world gives her. She was being a disrespectful little punk to everybody who loved and cared for her in her short 20 years of life. SHE was the one embracing Emily and Richard's life because she wanted to have a temper tantrum over one man telling her she couldn't hack it. Not to mention, she broke the law and stole and was entitled enough to be indignant over getting punished. Screw Rory. She's an entitled little brat that can't handle life if people aren't falling at her feet. If Rory didn't like her grandparents' rules, maybe her bum ass shouldn't have squatted in their pool house.

She legit lives for free at a pool house, got a car for graduation, has a rich dad now and the grandparents have always been there throwing parties and providing financially when needed. Indeed they get their money back, but lorelai pays them back not rory. Rory is always treated like she can do no wrong when she’s a terrible human being. she doesn’t realize how lucky she is to have lorelai as a mother, she’s ungrateful, and she’s a home wrecker on top of it all. it is so weird how she stayed with logan after he cheated on her with a whole bachelorette party squad and was still after his tail when he basically broke up with her for not engaging WHILE he had a fiancée. like girl standup.

      I agree, I don't support Rory here. She is 21 years old. Disappointments come with life. She is aware of this personal but with Mitchum this was her first real jolt into the real world. She had a couple growing up, first starting at Chilton then in Yale, with her assignments and at the paper. But nothing truly significant enough. She couldn't take critics but is unfortunate as she wanted to be a journalist that would entice critics for a career.
      Emily and Richard may have been overprotective and possibly overbearing but it came from care. Rory couldn't see that and also didn't tell them in the way she should have. As it came to a crumbling halt. When it didn't need to. Rory was suppose to be level headed but didn't act that way and hadn't for a while. They did give her space but when they realised she were getting too comfortable in this life. They tried to act in their own misguided way. There are strings in all famililial relationships no matter how we try to avoid them. The obvious ropes and chains depicted in this show are meant to underscore the difficulty in life even when you come from privilege and money. The main character walks away and then, in order to give her child the best advantages, crawls back to the patriarchy she despises. Interesting allegory.

      I more or less grew up on the show, but more as a “background show” something that was just in the common lexicon, so to speak. I’m rewatching it on Netflix and I have to agree with your assessment. There are a few writing inconsistencies here and there. But the heart of the show is just how messed up life can be and that not everyone grasps how to “adult” the same way. The revival is I think the theme of the show coming full circle. Lorelei despite being the “adult” in the dynamic arguably comes of age during the show, whilst Rory comes of age in a similar fashion in the revival. Life is messy, people are complicated and family always comes with baggage no matter your background.

      I take it to mean “life repeating itself.” Emily and Richard are loving grandparents don’t get me wrong. But they disrespect their daughter’s authority as the parent and are controlling. Rory could have acted more grateful, I’m not saying she isn’t acting entitled. But I think this scene highlights that they hadn’t really learned their lesson. They can’t just accept that their daughter and granddaughter are complicated people with their own autonomy. This failed them both in different ways. Lorelai might have forged her own path, but she is still made to feel like a failure and seeks their approval, even as they express their disappointment at her.
      Rory failed to become self sufficient because ironically she became too over reliant on their generosity and support. Due to their constant interfering nature and need for control. Failing to prepare her for life. People are quick to criticise Rory as an entitled spoilt brat. But the truth is, we are all shaped by our environment. Nooooo, REAL growing up is coming to the stark realization that both of these people are complex and flawed characters, who BOTH are accountable for the bad decisions they made that led to the disintegration of their relationship in this moment! REAL growing up is not being "team" anyone! What are you, a fuckin Twihard?! 🤣🤣🤣

    …and THIS is why Lorilie was so angry at her parents. They just wanted a ‘do over’ with another daughter. Anyone who can’t see that is absolutely blind. Rory is such an entitled brat!
