      She uses humor to cope, but being a teen mom, running away from her parents, and building a life on her own were huge challenges if not downright trauma. I think she downplays the seriousness to connect with Rory and show her the value of independence, but it’s a double-edged sword. Ugh, the way they treated Lindsey. And the show acts like there’s something wrong with her for liking Matchbox 25 (because it’s just not quirky enough). And I hate the way they rag on her for wanting a townhouse. I mean yes, her expecting that at 18 when they’re just getting started was unrealistic. But that fit within the lifestyle that she and Dean agreed to: he wanted a traditional marriage where she would stay home (and it looked like she was really trying, she was learning to cook and eager to make him happy) while he worked and provided. Marriages aren’t meant to be transactional, but borrowing from that framework for a minute, couples agree to things and have to make the give and take work-she was keeping up “her end,” meanwhile Rory looked down on that and encouraged Dean to resent the end he had willingly undertaken.

      Looking back, I can never forgive Jess for using Shane as a means to make Rory jealous which caused her to break up with Dean. Jess was meddling in a relationship all because he wanted Rory, despite the fact that when he got her, he didn't know how to be in a relationship and he and Rory weren't on the same wavelength! And after Dean and Rory break up, we never hear of Shane ever again! she just disappears. Much like Lindsey after the whole affair scandal! The show never brings up how they were affected by being used as pawns or place holders. Why?! Because if they showed how these girls were actually victims of the situations, it would make Rory look bad! And we can't have that in this show, now can we?

    Rory had no accountability or empathy for the feelings of others because of her privilege, she was always put on a pedestal and always had people helping her and coddling her. Rory definitely had a superiority complex. Everyone around her praised her so much she felt she was untouchable. She believed she was in control of every situation and could do no wrong. Therefore when Mitchum gave her some actual criticism, which she obviously had never heard from anyone before, she cracked like an egg. And her entitlement and condescension was straight up destructive. What she said about the ballerina, how she treated Shane and Lindsay are just glaring examples of such. And everyone let her get away with it. She ended up so washed up in the revival because she always flared up when she was told the truth. I will say Lorelai grew out of her pick-me tendencies and called out Rory on her bullshit. Rory never grew up.

    Lorelei & Rory were definitely giving off major “We’re not like the other girls! 😌” vibes. We see them both catch an attitude & become jealous around the girls & women who get involved with the guys they feel they have some prior claim on. It’s a very “But I was with them/ I wanted them first!” sort of mentality. Even if a particular girl wasn’t deemed a threat to their existence, beauty, or likability, they would still find something to dislike or mock about her appearance or personality. It’s hard to watch and hear commentary that didn’t age well but I do understand that the tropes & negative perceptions of certain kinds of women displayed in the show were reflections of the times. What can I say? The culture of film/music/fashion & beauty, especially during the Y2K era, was & still is unfortunately harsh towards girls and women everywhere. 😭

NOW it would be unacceptable and outrage but back then not so much. you clearly missed the point and wanted to be defensive. It was more acceptable back then and even encouraged; celebrity women went through it the most, in music, movies, tv shows and talk shows they would be referenced in derogatory ways. Why are you sitting here pretending as if it is the same, when it isn't. Were you even born or around then? and being 5 in the 2000s doesn't count. 6:22 Rory lives in this bubble where she’s always had financial security in some way or another; she’s never had to worry about paying for her education and getting a job was more out of gaining new opportunities than necessity and survival. A higher education costs a lot of money, and she probably can’t even wrap her head around what that could mean for some people. She pretends to have grown up humbly. When living with Lorelai, they could afford a trip to Europe, takeout almost every night, and a two story house. These are ‘little’ things she takes for granted. Rory's reaction to Dean dropping out is genuinely so, SO disgusting. One of my friends was telling she didn't know if she wanted to/ would go to college, that she might want a kid young or maybe would go to the military. And obviously, as her friend, I'm telling her to at least consider community college, but you would never catch me judging her for choosing not to. I will tell her to make sure she's financially secure for that child and to not join the military, (that girl can't run for shit and the military isn't a safe place for a girl, plus the risk of war at any moment... yeah no) but that's the limit. As a friend, all we will do is make sure our friends are making decisions they're sure about and that they'll be safe making, not making those decisions for then.
    Rory's reaction, to just think about herself and her own views about him dropping out, instead of properly caring about what this could mean for Dean and politely telling him to reconsider, is the most selfish thing a person could do, especially for someone who claims to 'love' Dean
    Plus that elitist ass comment about 'staying a construction worker'... let's not

    Rory was a piece of work. and It's definitely a cultural thing with the "not like other girls" trope, that wasn't a thing within our community. Rory wanted her privilege but at the same time wanted to pretend she didn't have any and that her hard work is why she got to where she was, she did work hard but she had a lot of help.
    pardon my french but who the f - - - did RORY think she was having any kind of input on Dean's marriage ?? friend or not she was always overstepping and her asking Dean "what did I do" when he called out at that dance was a prime example of her narcissistic behavior and thinking that he should've just accepted her having feelings for someone else and the only reason she cried at that dance wasn't because he broke up with her, but because he put her on blast to the people who put her on a pedestal.

    My least favorite Rory moment (after her sleeping with Dean which I cant believe you didnt mention! Lol) is how she treated her grandparents after leaving their house without even telling them. They let her live with them, remodeled their entire pool house for her, paid for a lawyer for her after she stupidly committed a felony, for her a job and what thanks did she give them? Left without a word or a thank you and never apologized to them. And even after all that, they were STILL willing to pay her tuition for her. And Lorelei didnt even call her out for how childish and ungrateful she was. Loreleis immaturity regarding her own parents really clouded her judgment when it came to Rory. She was so desperate to "win" against her parents when it came to Rory that she just let that behavior slide without a word. It absolutely infuriated me.

    I feel like I'm understanding Jane Austin's Emma more by watching analytical Rory videos 😂
    I feel that the writers assumed we would apply our knowledge of other tropes onto this show in order to understand what was going on. Rewatching this show years later or for the first time without the contemporary context leads to a completely new understanding of what was given to us.
    We often see the bookish kid be bullied and we only got this on Gilmore Girls in the first episode with Rory begining her class assignment while her classmates are slacking off and judge her.
    Meeting Paris was a unique experience of seeing the valedictorian be the mean girl, at least in the (American) media.
    And Rory feeling betrayed by Lane becoming a cheerleader reminds me of Daria going through the same, her best friend (Jane Lane 😂) became a cheerleader as a part of her "succeeding in failing" class assignment.
    It just feels like the writers tried to hit these topics but never had Rory to fully learn from these experiences.

    She definitely wasn't the nicest but I think calling her a mean girl is a stretch. I never really saw her holding any sort of social influence besides being loved by the adults of stars hollow or becoming head of the newspaper. Besides that, she doesn't seem to be very liked by people her age. She pretty much has no friends except for lane, Paris, and whatever boyfriend she has at the time. Unfortunately, I think she's been such a mama's girl that she only truly cares to love and respect those in nurturing positions such as adults and romantic partners. (but she will put herself before those people too) Her self righteousness keeps her social standing as somewhat of a solitary loser which is evident when she makes those two girlfriends at Yale and quickly loses them because she lies to protect a man that sees her as the prize she so desperately wants to be. To me, a mean girl uses her popularity to get her way, but Rory's personality has quite the opposite effect. It isolates her from others.

A mean girl by definition is a girl who is unkind to other women, looks down on people who aren’t like her, make hurtful comments and believe the world revolves around them. You don’t have to be a socialite, celebrity etc. to be one. So it’s not a stretch, maybe you think her behavior is okay and you have similar traits. A mean girl doesn’t look just one way, just like Janice from the movie Mean Girls. you’re just stereotyping what you believe a mean girl is.. like iconically said.. you view popular girls as mean and because they have popularity you somehow think it means they’re “mean” when being mean is a character trait not a social status.
      And calling women sl*ts, body shaming them for the public to read and always talking down on women who aren’t like you is mean girl behavior

      @Dark_velvet1696 i would say i’m both correct and incorrect. Rory is in fact a mean girl, but, she doesn’t exactly fit the mean girl trope. When analyzing fiction, discussing tropes and archetypes are definitely a real point of interest. You can quite frankly look up “mean girl trope” or “mean girl archetype” and see many sources of what the trope is and different analysis on it. I guess I was hoping to see how rory actually fits into the trope rather than just watching an analysis on her not being a good person. Both sides of the argument definitely hold up in this scenario.

      @@Emily-lb7rf This is not a trope video though, this is explaining why she is a mean girl not “The Mean Girl Trope” or archetype. She breaks down characters. How they connect to real life situations and people, how people like Rory have this cloak of innocence while being mean, manipulative, a gaslighter but her baby face and sweet voice will have people believe otherwise. I’ve met plenty of people like Rory who will have everyone believe they’re a victim and this sweet innocent people, I mean a lot of ww act like this in the work place with other women who aren’t whit e…especially in corporate and they’re not these hyper feminine girly girls, they’re just do underhanded things and are mean and when called out they resort to tears and try to get people to feel sorry for them. And depending upon your age you’ve seen enough of this type of behavior in the workplace.
      Also every video is not intended to be the same as others that’s why there are different creators because they break down things their own way.

    Lorelai always had her issues. She was not perfect and she didnt wanted to be one, yet she worked her arse off for Rory's future and loved her no mazter what. But Rory got everything served at silver plate. She only had to work hard in school because it was simply her dream, but she never was poor because of her grandparents. Lorelai, saw herself as lorelai, rory saw herself as gilmore

    In the beginning I really liked Rory's quirky character (potential) but that's exactly what happens when writers love and idolize their own characters too much. Rory was far from being pure and innocent... The first guy she slept with was her Ex who was MARRIED to someone else. Someone who might not have been perfect but I was on Lindsey's side the entire time and the show did her so dirty. Same wirh Lane...
    Lane will always be my favorite character from this show and the secret main character for me... She's a loyal friend who always goes out her way for Rory but when Lane needed her, Rory was self-centered. I always sympathized more with Lane than with Rory. And unfortunately, everybody still treated her like she was the picture perfect girl.

    I love hating Rory! She’s so well written that is almost perfect. Everything she does makes so much sense, every single behaviour! She’s a horrible person and that makes sense when you look closely to her upbringing and surroundings. It’s the most realistic display of what you get when someone is praised for just existing ALL THE TIME.

    I haven’t seen Gilmore Girls but I don’t know how I can after watching this video. It’s not that I’m being swayed, you made genuinely good points and those clips infuriated me. I think I’d be too busy being mad at Rory to be able to enjoy the show. I don’t see how people can defend her behavior, especially since it seems like she acted the same way for years and never changed. She had multiple people tell her off and she saw no issue. I might be also taking it a little personally because I did both ballet and cheer through middle and high school, and she’s just so ignorant to it all. Does she work for a company or write on her own? I just don’t see how she would be qualified to write about a ballet when knowing absolutely nothing and can’t even talk about the performance itself. I get the point in making difficult characters, it makes it more real, I just don’t think they should be main ones if they don’t improve.

    Glad you gathered the people who are obsessed with tv characters, cartoon characters, celebrities etc- it's at an all-time high now. there are so many people on the internet these days who indulge in nothing but negativity and leaving negative comments and then when people clap back at them, they like to play vi ctim. I know someone said it before on your other videos but there really needs to be a mental health screening before they're able to join social media.
    ~~~~ Rory writing that article about that ballerina was so mean and she got it from her mother, Lorelai taught her how to be a mean girl but because she wasn't hyper feminine or had blonde hair it was overlooked like you said.     She never stood a chance. She was raised around her mother who was so determined to be "better" than her family and those she deemed the enemy. She also named her kid after herself which is a red flag (yes it is a red flag when men do it too) for a bloated self image. On top of that her grandmother looked down on anyone not from her social class and would be nasty to her employees at the drop of a hat. Not to mention most characters have more self awareness in their pinky finger then they have inside all of them combined. Given her worship of the women in her life it's no wonder.
    In all of her responses to when someone calls her out there is never any accountability and she either doubles down or plays victim, she did it constantly. Lorelai told her about her affair and she makes excuses and gets upset at her mother for telling the truth, Logan checks her and she says she's not a trust fund baby-... chillleeee she's so oblivious lmao. Ballerina checks her she says "no one goes to see ballet" maybe you don't but you don't speak for everyone else. She did the same thing with Dean trying to gaslight him. She got it honest though because that whole family thought they could do no wrong
    From a writing standpoint, I think the writers had trouble coming up with plot points for Rory that were interesting, because let’s face it Rory isn’t nearly as charismatic as Lorelei. They worked well off each other in the beginning because they were just different enough. You envied the closeness of their relationship up until a point. But without her mom there, the character had to face other difficulties to be interesting. It felt like writers wanted Rory to be growing up throughout the show and therefore maturing. The thing is, Rory was very likeable and mature at the start of the show. So it felt strange for her to regress. I mean she is a serial cheater. And she gives up pretty easily when challenged. Taking a year off after being so school obsessed kind of went against her passion for learning. Felt unnatural. The Logan character was a big mistake imo. It turned the college years into just guy drama. I think that combined with certain aesthetic changes to Rory during college made her feel like a different person. That said, the character was not congruent at all. Which I guess is super realistic. Because a lot of soft spoken girl next door type people also do some bad stuff like cheating. I don’t think the show wanted people to dislike Rory or Lorelei though, so in this sense I think the show made mistakes.
