I am not saying that rory is right, even if it's an age to make mistakes. The point: Dean saw her more as an award or property, instead of love interest. His approach to women appeared in nuances way before Jesse arrived in stars hollow. It's not surprising how he treats Lindsay, someone that was always trying her best to make him happy. In a heavier show I am sure there would be domestic violence in that marriage. Dean is just the portrait of fragile masculinity.

Yes, her father loved her and did try to make time for her, but he wasn't living in the same house, Rory didn't see him that often, and he formed a new family with another woman. Luke doted on her too much and also could be a positive role model but was in no position to apply discipline. This show does a really good job of displaying how detrimental single motherhood is to a child's development. Lorelei did the best she could but without a strong father figure, Rory falters.

Rory loved to complain that she had it hard, but deep down she loved her privilege, all she had to do to pay for her fancy education was her and her mum to go to dinner once a week, but even that was too hard at times.
when Rory didn't get that fellowship, she acted like she was entitled to have it, because to her. no one was better that HER.
Also don't get me started on what the Show did to Lane. she should have been touring the world, selling out and being awesome. instead of what we got. how come only Rory's dreams come true? and Rory screwed that up
Rory Gilmore really was a total sociopath

Meanwhile Rory is talking on the phone saying she is an independent adult. Ummm no Rory, you’re not. Your grandparents are taking care of you and funding your life. That part drove me crazy. Exactly like when she told paris that she's independent and on her own. Which she wasn't on her own and she was still living with her grandparents and. Just because she lived in the pool house didn't mean a thing and on your own is living in your own place. Taking care of your own bills and paying for your car not depending on other people to pay things for you. Her grandparents were taking care of everything and yet she said she's on her own. Also it seems like the grandparents treated Rory better than their own daughter which is just sad. Their granddaughter stole a yacht and faced legal problems because of it. They assumed that she would only get 20 hours of community service since she's a "gilmore" and it was the complete opposite. They renovated the pool house for her and assumed that everyone will bend their schedules for her so she can get a job even after getting the 300 hrs. There's all sorts of jobs out there for you and they'll bend their schedules for you just because she's a gilmore. When lorelai got pregnant and it was the complete opposite. Rory faced legal problems and look at all of the things her grandparents did for her. Legal problems is way more serious and her grandparents seemed to do a lot more for her when she faced those problems. Oh yeah she's facing legal problems and let's renovate a house for her and pay for everything. When lorelai succeeded without going to a fancy college and her parents didn't congratulate her.

Problem with Rory was that, she was made to feel that she was superior than other kids by Lorelei, Luke and everyone else. Dean was same age as Rory but he received harsh treatment all the time until there was Jess. It comes from the fact that, lorelei shared all her thoughts with rory which might not always be positive or good mostly based on 1 or 2 meetings. Difference was that Lorelei didn't look down on others or thought that she was superior but Rory did. Lorelei did the humble jobs to make ends meet but Rory couldn't take a small criticism because she never saw failure in her life before that. Lane was a way better character than Rory. She was committed to her dream and passion regardless of how tough it got for her. Rory was there for Lane many times but she wasn't there enough. I completely relate to having a best friend who makes you feel like a third wheel, who don't care about your news that much because it doesn't appear as big as theirs. I used to relate to Lane so much, I always felt like that friend who makes big deal about her friend's life when it wasn't completely reciprocated by others. Paris and Rory were better friends because Paris always kept Rory on her toes, she would enter forcefully, regardless of how different they were, they both were competitive and were kind of similar when it came to studies. Rory was habitual of getting all the attention. Dean always wanted to be with her, Jess loved her and wanted her regardless of number of years passed, Logan changed himself for her even though their relationship was more equal because Logan would call her out all the time but he still liked her because "she wasn't like other girls. " even Tristan and Marty liked her always. But I feel that she gets lot more hate than she deserves. Her life is not successful, messed up so she did have to face the consequences. It just hurts because she always have a great support system around unlike many people.

    • @CelticStar87
      @CelticStar87 ปีที่แล้ว +14

The thing with Rory… she had a support system but she would so often throw everything back on them. Mom tries to get her to see that having an affair can’t be logically justified and she throws it back at the mom for ruining it. Deep down she knew she was wrong but she was too proud to admit it. Nearly every time she has a fight with Lorelei, she runs to her grandparents (who always seem to take her side - which I think she knew) or to Dean or Jess or Logan instead of dealing with it head on. One of Rory’s biggest faults is her pride. She rarely admitted when she was in the wrong. She balked at her support system and always pitted her grandparents against Lorelei knowing full well the history there. They could have made her character grow in the revival, however all they did was show that she hadn’t really changed. Lorelei had more character growth than Rory did… even Emily showed more growth. Everyone wanted her and Jess to get together at the end of the revival, but I think Jess is too good for her now. They tried to make the story cycle back with Rory becoming Lorelei and Jess becoming Luke… I don’t think it would have worked unless Rory did so massive soul-searching and dropped her pride. Everyone makes mistakes, Rory rarely admitted to any of hers.

  • @CCKey92
    @CCKey92 ปีที่แล้ว +38

when I first saw the OG show I loved Rory's character. In the beginning she was kind and so smart and willing to learn; that's exactly what I wanted when I was that age when I got into school and hat to focus on my studies. I even got the exact same backpack as she had because she was my rolemodel back then.
I wanted to be as smart as her and tried my best but failed so badly because I struggeled with school and bullying very much, so my plan quickly changed from "becoming Rory 2.0" to "just survive school".
Than later on Rorys character became the worst and now, rewatching the show for like the 1000 time, I just can say how awful she is as a person. I also am an only child and was spoiled by two pairs of grandparents and my mom and dad ... but she put this on a different level.
She kinda always thought, because she is her grandparents favorite, she is better than anyone else; she can not take critics (Mitchem was 100% right about her, but he could have been a bit less harsh in the way of telling her) and she acts like her mistakes are never that bad as they actually are.
Jess for example was just a kid who didn't know where he was belonging to; he was helpless and too proud to call for help and needed to learn to let others into his life who he actually could trust. He never was that bad, as the show showed him to be.
But Rory? Ugh. Terrible Person. I absolutely agree with those picks but I am sure there are plenty that also could have been on this list! for example:
    - stealing a boat because she got crisizised and was "bored"
    - not confronting her boyfriend Logan for stealing something from her grandmothers house (a person who ALWAYS supported and loved her unconditionally)
    - giving away her mothers clothes to schoolmades without even asking
    - taking Lanes friendship as granded in general (I guess the first time she thanked her was in the OG finale)
    - making Logan responsible for her decision of leaving Yale and being "lost"
    - wanting Dean to go to colleague even tho he had other plans (even when he was married)
    - not having time for her boyfriend Dean because of school; even tho she promised to spend more time with him and at the same time being pissed when he had to work!
    - not supporting Lane when she got kicked out from home (did she ever helped her finding a new place to stay or something else? did she ever called her? Did she even talked to her roommates in Yale if it was okay that Lane could stay a few days there in this difficult situation? I doubt it.)
    - going out with Robert on purpose to make Logan jealous even tho she always getting nuts when he did the same
    End of rent XD

What about missing Lorelei’s graduation to go to New York to see Jess? Why did she choose that particular day to do that? Lorelei was always there for her; and graduating was a major event in Lorelei’s life, yet she just blew it off as if it didn’t matter. How disrespectful to her mother who gave her EVERYTHING, and went to night school for years to complete her degree. I would have definitely included that in this top ten, most likely somewhere in the top five.

Rory was the wonder child, the redemption for her mother's mistake when she was younger. And the people in town and her own mother treated her as the wonder child in every aspect of her life, like she could not make mistakes. I'm rewatching the show right now, and one phrase that is said by almost every character is "is Rory we are talking about, she wouldn't do something like this", as a excuse for her behaviour when she did something wrong. She couldn't take criticism well and can't handle with rejection or things not going her way.
I'm at the moment in the show where she is falling for Jess and just dragging Dean along, what she does again when she falls for Logan later on.

I just finished season 4 now. This is the first season when she gets told she's doing something wrong and her reactions are awful in every situation. Just to name a few moments- professor tells her to drop a class, she is so rude to him and almost starts lecturing him, and then later cries and whines to lorelai and dean. It wasn't your typical "school is hard" moment, it was just "not everyone i pass by is telling me i'm perfect, life is so hard". This wasn't on the list but was extremely annoying and just amazing introduction of what is to come. Another two situations- the tree and sleeping with dean are also great examples of how privileged she is. "My tree, I was his girlfriend first", girl get some help

In Season 2, she slowly strung Dean along and flirted with Jesse as well as kissed him, so she cheated on Dean too.
Then there's the fact she always sees herself as a victim and constantly winges.
    Missing her mother's graduation.
Her review on the ballet resitle was cruel. Yeah she was meant to give a honest review and there are always critics in these lines of work. But what she said and wrote was just plain cruel and unnecessary. It was just bullying which could have caused someone real problems with their self esteem and confidence.
In Season 1 when she and Dean broke up, she let the entire town hate and belittle him. Yes Dean was wrong to break up with Rory because she didn't say I love you back, but he was heartbroken. She didn't have to make it sound like he just dumped her because he got bored and was a player. I get she was hurting, but so was he and she didn't have to let him seem like such a jerk.

I stopped liking Gilmore Girls years ago and refused to watch the miniseries. But something that always bothered me in the original series is that neither Rory, nor Lorelai are ever held accountable for the thing they do. when Rory slept with Dean, how come no one looked at her as the other woman, and only blamed Dean? Granted he sent her mixed signals to some degree (suggesting that the marriage was over before it was but showing no proof). That doesn't make her innocent. When Lorelai broke up with Luke and ran back to Rory's dad, she didn't seem to take any heat for hurting Luke. Rory doesn't seem to take heat for anything she does until she goes to college and has to start over with no well-liked (in some cases it's more like tolerated) mother to protect her or deflect from her bad behavior. I feel like the town is living in a perpetual state of pity for the 2 women because they had it rough when they were younger. This is just my perspective talking.

Deans affair with Rory , was a bad choice for Rory but she is “ the other woman “ and hurts no one else by her actions… Dean had a beautiful wife whom was trying hard to be good to him … that is why he comes off as the worst in the situation.

There were also many many times she was the reason why Emily and Lorelai had such a bad relationship. For example, the first episode of season 4 when Emily was waiting for both Lorelai and Rory to attend the Friday night dinner. This was a pivotal dinner because Lorelai had previously payed off Chilton and Emily did not react well to that, because she believed Lorelai will stop attending. However, because of the Yale start date debacle, Lorelai had to stay back and instead of telling Emily that Lorelai can't attend Friday night dinner, Rory says nothing and lets her believe that Lorelai snub them and just doesn't care.

I think while all of these do portray why rory is a flawed character, they’re kind of superficial or ‘surface level’. For most people, the things that really made them dislike her were her relationships with other characters, particularly her love interests and sometimes her mother. The way she was always given the moral high ground in all her relationships and never acknowledged her mistakes as well. She comes off really entitled and doesn’t seem like the ideal partner in any sort of relationship. In a small town wouldn't such a great kid be surrounded by other friends her own age? Only the adults like her, and her only friend her age is Lane. Even Lane's mom doesn't like Rory. She was so "beloved" as they said because the adults liked her, but they never fully explain what the adults like about her. Once she left her mud puddle she started to realize she wasn't all she thought she was. Worst character growth ever, BUT the lack of friends her age at the beginning sort of foretold that maybe she wasn't that great from the beginning. I would argue that Lane was a much more likeable kid but how her mum being super strict and quite unlikebale made the people in town stay from her buisness to avoid any problems with Ms. Kim. Rory's selfishness and entitelment could be seen from the first episode (making Dean take the blame for the breakup while she was at fault, running away from home and to her grandparent's house without telling her mom fully aware of how much hurt that could cause Loreli, refusing to go chilton for a boy...) but I guess everyone execused her behaviour because of her young age.
I feel the direction that the show has taken with Rory's character wasn't the best , I mean neagtive growth existsn a character going from good to bad is normal but they should be called out for it, but Rory wasn't perfect to begin with , it's just that everyone made her think she was and all of her mistakes and bad personality traits were overlooked, Rory and Loreli would even make the other people the bad ones whenever it was convinient for them.

To me, that was the moment she showed her true colours. I think Rory wanted the moon regardless of whatever it is she wanted (school, college, career, relationships, etc.). And she thought she deserved the moon too. But no matter how "smart" Rory thought she was, she just had no earthly idea how to get to the moon or any idea what to do with in if she ever got there. That's not necessarily a bad thing. Rory just didn't have the capacity for understanding that the world didn't revolve around her and that there was more to life than just shooting for the moon. She never quite figured out that if she missed the moon, she could land among the stars and be happy with that. But once she fixated on something, Rory had to have it her way or no way, without seeing the bigger picture or anyone else involved. Sure she's selfish and entitled. I think no one taught her that, no matter how hard you might want something, you don't always get everything you want, which is really the caveat of her privilege. And when others tried to tell her that, Rory just refused to listen and reassess her situation, and then maybe try out a different method, even one that may have been contrary to what she thought was best for her...

It makes me sad that Rory didn’t have better character development, but I also think it’s realistic.
Her mom is an only child of very wealthy parents, and because she’s an only child she gets all their expectations. She resents this, and attempts to push them away. They also use money as an attempt to control her a lot so she has a lot of resentment surrounding their money.
Then she gets pregnant, she’s a young single mother. Her options are struggle to provide for her daughter or go to her parents for support. She’s also extremely open with her daughter, so it’s no secret to Rory that her mom resents her grandparents wealth and status.
It’s created this person who was raised with frankly a lot of privilege who was taught to resent that privilege. Not only has her grandparents wealthy allowed her to go to expensive schools to boost her resume, but their networking connections have opened endless doors for her.
And frankly she might not have a trust fund but her grandparents would give her anything so functionally the only difference is she has to ask, the horror.
That’s not even going into the small town she grew up in idolized her and being an only child and only grandchild she got a lot of attention, that’s all understandably going to make her feel very center stage.

Thank you for doing this one. It says something that three of the ten come from the revival

I like Rory as a character, in some ways. Such as the parts of her studying can be motivational. Although, there are lots of worst moments for
Rory. One of the worsts is deciding not to go to Yale, having affairs in the revival series, and as innocent as we all think she might be from the outside, her actions and decisons says it all.

Rory is entitled, spoilt, insensitive, high headed and all air no substance girl .She keeps making same mistakes again and again, she dumped dean for Jess then later she had an affair with dean while he was married ( not that he was not guilty ), did the same with Logan . Never respected money and took her folks ( and everyone around her) for granted . Not to mention she throws tantrums, disrespects her mother , acts as if she knows it all .She is a cautionary tale

The more Rory distanced herself from Stars Hollow, the worse she became as a person. She was absolutely awful hanging around Logan's prick friends.

For me, that was the point. Yes, Rory seemed to have it made. She was beautiful, smart, had a great mom, etc...but despite that she made mistakes. Very bad mistakes. Like we all do. For most of the show she was an adolescent who was trying to figure things out and therefore we can relate. If she was perfect, we would not have a show and really who wants to watch a show about a perfect teen who never makes mistakes, who is never a jerk. Not me.
