This is the most mind-blowing game that I've played in terms of when I first played it. Yes, it's aged the worst out of the mainline GTA games but when this first came out, nothing like it
GTA3 was jaw-dropping when it came-out. Us gamers couldn't believe what we were playing. I still remember the rainy Friday afternoon in which my mother text me that she had successfully picked-up the game from the store and had it waiting for me when I returned home from school. Phones were still new at that time and I smuggled mine into school especially. If you were there at the time, you know, they were special days. This game will always be in my top three.
Lol I was 18 and just graduated so I had the time and money to game. But it was sold out literally anywhere you could buy it for the longest time, hell it wasn't until like February 02 that I finally got my hands on a copy of GTA3 and a ps2, which were also hard to find due to being so damn popular.
One of the most important GTA or probably *THE* most important, this game carried the gaming industry and changed it in a big different direction and inspired other open world crime games.
I remember being 8 years old, my older brother was begging our mom to get a PS2 with GTA 3 so we went to blockbuster drove home and WOW… we fought a lot for the controller it was so bad we stole the fat tv and PS2 once in awhile back and forth to our rooms 😂
I'm surprised you didn't mention the music in GTA 3. That opening track ... and even though the radio stations were short, repeating after just an hour, the music was so original compared to all the other GTAs. Also, I'd argue that the writing for the adverts & Chatterbox is still funnier than anything that came after it in the franchise.
I remember being 8-9 years old and my older brother had this game. It was so amazing to drive around the city. I spent hours just driving around, trying to follow the traffic rules 😂
The one thing I can say I love about the older GTA games was the difficulty and true freedom on how you complete the mission. Once Rockstar Games became more narrative driven, the mission design got more linear to fit the story. Also a bit of handholding with checkpoints and quick restart points. The only modern equivalent is in GTA Online in some cases where the story is just there as a backdrop for the radiant missions. If you failed a mission in the original GTA 3, VC and SA - you lost your weapons and you had to travel back to the mission location to restart it. It was a challenge for sure.
People now just do not understand how incredible this game was at the time. Not just the graphics but the ability to go anywhere. You just had to be there.
man same I was there, bell rung when I was in 6th grade and all any of were waiting for was to go home, or to a friend's house to play gta 3. best times
After 3 years only pc competitive multiplayer gaming from 1999-2002 this was the game where i started 2 enjoy singleplayer again. I loved it so much. Only watching GTA3 puts me into the mental state you mentioned. Such awesome memorys ❤️ Thanks Rockstar Games
For me, Vice City was the most mind blowing gaming experience at 10 years old in 2002. I remember seeing all the commercials on tv with the song “I ran”. GTA 3 felt like a step below Vice City.
Words can’t describe the feeling of cold hard bad assery I felt turning this game on watching the title sequence and loading screens roll while anticipating advancing the story, or just rampaging around however I wanted. This game changed everything.
Nobody now can truly understand the shock of this game when it was released. It truly is a cultural icon. It jump started more advances in games and created controversies.
I love this game. The start of it all. Very challenging at times but man it felt so good beating it. Loved the story, loved the characters, everything was just amazing.
GTA 3 was my favorite. I remember being a kid and not doing homework because I was playing this game all the time. Everybody talks about Vice City but I never really liked that game. GTA 3 and GTA 4 were my favorite.
Glad to hear I wasn't the only one who never really liked Vice City. The most annoying thing about VC for me was that they removed the best camera option for driving from GTA 3 & gave us a useless camera option that was too far away from your vehicle. I only ever enjoyed used motorbikes in VC, to avoid accidentally ramming into the back of other cars that you couldn't see in front of you.🤣
Your in the same boat as m then mate, VC I didn't really like either. Growing up in Notts in England in the city games like this were one of the reasons I enjoyed gaming so much just being in the city, the atmosphere, the reverb of between the buildings listening to people and the dark weather. Absolutely perfect.
GTA3 is a real time capsule. At the time of its release, it did not evoke nostalgia for the old days. It froze the atmosphere, visuals, sounds and music of that time. And the vibe of a big city is important, where everything changes instantly, and not a small cozy town, where the mood of past decades can be preserved. Here is what else 3 are more important than VC and SA, in my opinion, besides the game design leap.
It's crazy I only started playing gta trilogy again cause of the update and then the other day your ps2 unboxing video popped up on my recommendations and then found this one after subbing to u everything you said was so true had to turn the sensitivity almost down to 1 just so I could turn without flipping my car like 300 times I just finished San andreas now I'm on gta3 nd vice city nd I then I'm gunna play gta4 which I got last week
Still the best decision Take2/Rockstar could have ever made. Zooming the camer down and right behind the protagonist. Don't get me wrong, I loved the first couple of GTA games but GTA 3 was revolutionary.
This was hard when I 1st played it because there wasn't a map and the mafia would blow up your car with one shot but now it's much easy and know my way around the map the ambulance mission was hard because the vehicle flips over easy
GTA 3 was revolutionary for this type of genre, but GTA 4 really did something special by pushing the boundaries of what physics could be capable of during that era of GEN 7.
How many times have I got myself staring at the game cover at times and salute it with a nod like a old, trustworthy friend. I pop the disc into the PS2, grab myself some snacks and soda before I venture to Portland, Staunton Island and Shoreside Vale.
Vivid memories of playing this classic in the night when my infant daughter woke up she used to lie on my chest sleeping while i played this. She is now 16 years old 😮
This game will be always special to me i couldn't play the game when it first released because i was born in 2003 but when my father bought me a pc in early 2010's it had pre installed PS1 and PS2 games on it one of them was GTA 3 In that time i did'nt even know this series was poplar because i had no knowlage in gaming So when i first play it my jaw dropped . The intro alone , made my mind explode , seeing the bridge getting destroyed and roaming in liberty city was an amazing experince
I lost the last bit of whatever shit I had left the first time I saw the trailer for this game as a kid. I couldn’t focus on anything and when I finally got the game it was all I could think about. It’s one of my favorites of the franchise on a sentimental level.
Lol. I don't think I ever played this game. I was just around people who did play it and remember bits of it being played. It was crazy for the time, for sure.
I don't know if alot of people realized this as a kid. The easiest way to win those street races is to actually drive slowly, not too slow tho, just enough speed to not lose visual of your opponents. Then you will see them tear each other apart and you can jus swoop in and go in first for the rest of the race.
In my opinion i played gta 1 first then 2 gta 4, and sa, gta 3 and vice sity, then vice city history so i think the early gta 1,2,london and 3 are the most complete, gta san andreas is good but just for the nostalgia of th e west coast 90s ghetto thing.
I was a little late to GTA III and when I did play it I wasn't quite as enthralled with it as others were at that time. It was Vice City which hooked me, then I also think I picked up San Andreas in the release window. Bought GTA IV on release day but didn't end up jumping into it 'til a year afterwards. Also didn't end up playing GTAV until 2019. Awesome series, but I think Vice City and San Andreas are the only two which I experienced somewhat concurrently with the broad gaming populace. In the age of remakes, if there's anything which could use a ground-up remake it's Vice City/Vice City Stories 👍
Playing through this game for the first time is probably my happiest gaming memory. It didn't feel too hard either as it was all we had. This game had aged pretty poorly all the way back when San Andreas had released. Now it feels almost unplayable. One thing I miss is getting a clear mission from an "employer" and actually getting paid a lot for them. It's been increasingly about personal drama since Vice City.
Yeah, I enjoyed this video a little bit. I played GTA3 for the first time in 2002 and I was around 12 years old I guess. The very first time I played the game I got up to the Toni missions, and in one mission the game froze and I never saved the game. Had to restart the game from scratch, that was a piss take.
I actually played it on release both on PC and PS2, and yes, aiming on PS2 is a lot harder then aiming on PC with my mouse but I did it ok and today I prefer playing it with controller...
I remember in Like December 2001 I was STILL on the Fence if i wanted to get a PS 2 or a Dreamcast and my Buddy Said You gotto get the PS 2 for GTA 3 its the greatest Game Ever and You need No other Game. That was also the Time When i Gold Medaled EVERYTHING in SSX God i Loved that Game Sad after SSX 3 the Series went Downhill No pun intended.
the hardest gta has ever got in the series after 3 was gta online heist on hard it feels like their assault rifles are m60s with the minigun rate of fire attacked. i think gta games need to be harder but not cheap, max payne 3 was a perfect balance of that difficulty, if you stood around or took cover too much the NPC would 1 hit head shot max and if you rushed and played like a zombie then you would dint instantly so you had to go not too fast but not too slow and move around. gta needs to be like that for missions but easy in free roam. think of it when was the last time you actually had to be quick to kill someone in gta? basically almost never but when you fight players in gta online in TDM you have to be as quick as spiderman or you die in 1 shot and i think single player needs that type of lingo to make the NPC less campy and predictable. gta online almost balances it out on hard but they camp too much and combine that with aimbot it just forces you to abuse tear gas and fire so less campy would be perfect but the same type of team work they do. i think the last hardest free roam game i ever played was saints row 1.
I never played this on the PS2 back in the day but on the PC, and as you might imagine, aiming was never a problem. However, I recently tried it on the emulator with a controller, and I have to agree, the aiming is atrocious - fun game though.
this game is the definition of "skill issue" if you're bad at it, you're babied by modern controls to the point you can't even figure out how to press R1 and Circle to shoot someone or cycle enemies with R2. At 4:23 your limo is ALMOST on fire when this, up to this point, is essentially a "just drive from a to b to c" before combat begins - it's a pure indication of lack of skill especially when you didn't even think to use the pay n' spray 20-30 seconds before when you picked up Luigi which was right by his marker if your car was this broken... at least you admit it unlike most youtubers. :D
This game was " rage quit auto". However, because it was a compelling story I always came back. It's sad to see the elongated production times of modern games don't lead to better games. Even GTA5 though technically superior was less compelling to me and has turned into a psychopathic gaming casino. I may play this again but I need a nap first.
@@Kiwi_2k24 Yep. Its all style with no substance. GTA 4 was by far the best looking game ever made back when it came out in 2008, and this compensated for the painfully tedious campaign mode. However in 2024, I can't in good conscience say this. The vehicle physics are still better than GTA 5 tho.
Love the review but my guy, you didn't learn the controls!! In the beginning where you pick up the free gun behind ammunation, you're supposed to go through a demo of how to aim!! The game's aiming is basically you hit R1 to aim, and R2/L2 to tab between targets. It's not a free aim like gat 4 or 5, it's tab targeting between enemies.
GTA3/4 are my least fav. Vice & SA is what started the series IMO. I think the backdrop of NYC just doesn’t wrk bcuz it’s too concrete & steel. Being half city half open space makes gameplay enjoyable + the soundtracks in both those games are legendary
Now players never seen such a big gaming upgrade. Like back then from gta 2 to gta3. PlayStation1 to PlayStation2 is biggest jump gaming era.
This is the most mind-blowing game that I've played in terms of when I first played it. Yes, it's aged the worst out of the mainline GTA games but when this first came out, nothing like it

It was easily the most revolutionary game of its time when it first came out.
@ruck27 This is why it will always be my favorite GTA game, when this came out it was revolutionary lime nothing ever seen, people just forget

Gta3 had the most darkest atmosphere. It gave off horror elements. The fog at times was very thick and made things feel eerie.
I guess if you take manhunt's atmosphere and put it in a gta game you get gta 3. Indeed the fog made liberty city quite silent hill esque.
Yeah but only PS2 had that amazing atmosphere
@@theharwoodbutcher70 PC too. Although still better on ps2
Agreed but in terms of storytelling Gta IV had the darkest story and vibes
Gta 3 manhunt, Max Payne, the warriors were some dark games rockstar made

The game's aiming is basically you hit R1 to aim, and R2/L2 to tab between targets. It's not a free aim like gat 4 or 5, it's tab targeting between enemies.
Hope he never had a Nintendo. All those games are hard😂
This game was boss when came out vice city san Andrea's better but this was 1st gta that had wow factor ok not aged well but brilliant in 2001 👍
GTA3/4 are my least fav. Vice & SA is what started the series IMO. I think the backdrop of NYC just doesn’t wrk bcuz it’s too concrete & steel. Being half city half open space makes gameplay enjoyable + the soundtracks in both those games are legendary
