  • Hildegard of Bingen (1098 - 1179), also known as Saint Hildegard, was a German Benedictine abbess, writer, composer, philosopher, Christian mystic, visionary, and polymath. She is one of the best-known composers of sacred monophony, as well as the most-recorded in modern history. She has been considered by many in Europe to be the founder of scientific natural history in Germany.

I love how prophetic this is. She lived in a time when there were really no major climate changing events but probably just saw how nature is violated in small but many ways and she probably saw how it can exponentially increase over time and here we are with our current state of affairs with nature.

Something about the women Christian mystics really appeals to me. Maybe it is the emphasis on love together with the daringness to speak loudly despite so many pressures not to. Hard not to admire that. For Hildegard in particular, I also admire her soul being equal parts science and art, which is something I aspire towards as well. It is a historical injustice, and certainly an outcome of patriarchy, that she is so obscure today.

von means from in german and is not a noun and therefore not capitalised. It is only capitalised at the start of a sentence, like english. So Hildegard von Bingen is the correct german spelling/capitalisation, or Hildegard of Bingen if translated to english. I am learning german currently :)
