This is so helpful. I usually do the daily legendary marks events, and then buy the MIDA Multi-Tool, dismantle it, and get my shard. But this makes things so much easier.
Awesome tutorial. I just found out about this method a few days ago. I have way to many exotic shards but this will definitely help out a lot of the newcomers.

if bungie does anything to reduce the exotic gain from dismantle. im blaming you. i already knew this but once it goes public like what your doing, thats when they do something about it.
They're not going to do anything about it because its a basic mechanic of the game. A fully leveled up weapon no matter the tier will give you more materials than a basic weapon.
this tricks been around a while man,they have had a long time to patch it so dont think they will

Hey 2PointO, I know an even easier way to farm them. This way if you don't want to lose motes of light, but want to gain them, you can still get more exotic shards. What you need to do is buy a Primary weapon, a Special weapon and a Heavy weapon exotic and buy telemetries for each weapon type. Use your telemetries, and equip your weapons. After you use your 6 motes of light, you can dismantle the fully levelled up exotic weapons and receive 6 exotic shards and 9 motes of light instead of wasting 3. This is a lot more time efficient aswell and so long as you have 6 motes of light and lots of glimmer, you can easily farm infinite amounts of exotic shards and motes of light. Keep up the good work man, I'm loving your content.

Tested this on the Xbox One (as of 2016/11/10) and it works. Also tested with armor anyway, my statement, only use this method with weapons. :)

First thing that everyone that doesn't already know of this method needs to know.
YES the weapon you choose matters. Heavy weapons cost around 8~9 motes to level it. Special cost around double of that. Primary weapon costs about triple of that. So unless you absolutely do not care about wasting your motes of lights what so ever then pick up w/e weapons you want. If you do however want to save your motes of light the best way you can, buy the heavy weapons.
Note that buying the exotic swords costs more motes to level than the other weapons such as Thunderlord, Truth, or Dragon's Breath. I highly suggest you buy these 3 as to my knowledge they all cost the same amount of motes to max it out which is give or take 8~9 motes without the telemetry.

Does the exotic you scrap to get your first shard need to be year 2?
I think it does matter which type you choose. Heavy Weapons seem to upgrade faster for me if you use motes on them.
I've noticed I did the same thing with year one weapons since I haven't collected many year 2 yet, Mine costs legendary marks at the moment(noob to expansions) and it doesn't give me the same items back . Only weapon parts and 2 shards, no motes. It also takes about 10 motes to fully upgrade. So does it only work as shown in the video with year 2 weapons?
If you equip say a class item with "increased EXP gain for rocket launchers" (if you're using DB or Truth), does this method take only 5 motes to fully level up?
You should be doing it with an exotic armor you won't get the bonus exp from telemetry but at some point it will level up and you can dismantle it when it does.

You can use the same way but with blue armor and farm mote of light
for some reason even though i use a telemetry it still uses up like 12 mots of light any tips? btw i used the jade rabbit for the duping
Id just copy what hes doing and use the dragons breath because it doesn't take up that many motes. Alot of primaries take a lot of motes to level up
heavy weapons take less to level up
Even though glimmer it easy to come by it took me almost a month to get back up to max glimmer again
