- In this video I review the Rupert Neve Master Bus processor as both a compressor and stereo field editor. The MBP is a very popular master bus processor that is often compared to the SSL Fusion. The two are not alike and this video shows that.

Thanks for doing all these vids. Great to see the differences and various applications of each unit.
Really dig this channel, nice to geek out over some really high-end gear. It would be interesting to see what the back of your mastering rack looks like, cable management and how it all fits together.
Thank you. Glad you are enjoying the channel. Whilst it's time consuming. It is a lot of fun to do and helps promote our brand. So it's win win for everyone. There's not much to say in terms of cable management. It's pretty tidy. I custom build my racks with power supplies in the bottoms of them so power cables sit in the bottom of the rack away from audio cables. The audio cables are all xlr as short as possible. Running a dante system is great as this massively reduces the amount of cables needed.
@@AudioAnimalsStudio are you using Dante per rack and create a chain through Dante from one rack to the next? I’m currently migrating my studio (s) to Dante.
@gwsound no, dante is used for routing for trinnov, burl converters and atmos renderer. Audio is sent from the DAW into the Avid HD native then into the Avid MTRX then into the Dante network where it is sent to the Burl converter. From there audio is converted from digital to analogue and out to the mastering chain.

They are both ours. We had one in studio A and one in studio B. They were never used together. I had them both in this studio so I could shoot a video comparing the super silk and 2 mbps combined to give me what is similar the MBT super silk.

Thanks, amazing video as usual, can't wait to see the MBT+MBP Video. I've compared your previous video with this one on two browser's window but it's hard to have an idea because the EQ section was used with the MBT (which add a lot in front of the MBP). So at the end what did you prefer my friend, two MBT in mid/side, one MBP or one MBT ? Im curious to get you first opinion before the upcoming MBT+MBP video, thanks 😉
I prefer the MBT for the way I use the MBP. I explain this is a lot of detail in the upcoming video. How I use the MBP as a SFE it does feel like it doubles up if using both. But if you are using the MBP as a compressor it is a great combination.
This is why I'm using the same audio in each video. So we can do what you are doing and cross reference each unit.

Very interesting opinion, after hearing all video, I feel the "sfe to comp" is the thing and 2 MBT can reach also this which is fine but adding the EQ section. I don't see myself going with only one MBT, it sounds great but not having mid/side somewhere in the chain is missing. But maybe if you keep only one MBT this is because you have Mid/side with an other unit ? :)
@sound4label yes I have a mid side rack consisting of SPL Gemini, SPL PQ, kush clariphonic and Elysia Nvelope. The after compression later in the chain a Goly Porter Grinder. So for me I'm pretty much covered with mid side options.

Why is there so much confusion about the SFE to comp? I’ve been trying to find information about it and whether or not I should get a MBP. I thought this would be a useful function but nobody seems to care for it.
One person on a forum mentioned the depth and width controls become the inputs for the compressors and drive the amount of gain reduction. Is this the most accurate description?
I love this unit. I’ve had it for a few years but still have yet to figure out how to properly use SFE to Comp. The manual doesn’t go into enough detail. And when you turn the gain knobs on the compressor while this is engaged, weird phasing and signal dropouts occur, and I even reached out to Neve directly to get a proper explanation (because it’s more technical than just mid side compression). The actual response I got was “it’s extremely difficult to use and we tend to recommend our users to just leave it off” 😂. Any tips on how to properly use this function?
It's really hard to get your head around and the manual is very vague. I've seen so many comments where people have the MBP and have no idea how to use it effectively. So it's not uncommon. What you could do is setup similar to how I have the SFE setup in this video. Then tweak from there. See what works for you.

You've often talked about how much you love the SFE on the MBP, can the Width control on MBT fully replace the SFE of the MBP in your workflow?
I think it can in many ways. I haven't got the MBP in my chain at the moment and I'm not missing it. But I have Width control on the MBT, SPL Gemini and LAAL. So I'm very much covered.

Disclaimer: I might be a music snob 🥸 After watching quite a few of your gear review videos, I just had to share that from your example tracks the only one I can actually stand to listen to is the blues track, the others I usually need to skip after a couple of seconds. Don't know if other viewers feel the same, but I would really appreciate to hear some less jingle-like music in the future. Other than that, I really enjoy watching your videos, thanks for sharing your knowledge!
I try to use a varied range of royalty free music. Some you'll like some you won't like. But what we always need to bear in mind is everyone has different tastes in music. It's important in future videos we don't just use music you like. And instead use music that spans different genres.
life is tough boys, you think you got problems, i gotta decide between using my MBP, MBT, SSL bus plus or my highland BG-2 on my 2 bus. i guess i could just go with HG2 black box instead. and for anyone wondering about SSL fusion its actually pretty good provided you want a more vintage sound. at first i felt like my MBT absolutely destroyed the fusion and then i realized it says VINTAGE DRIVE, not classy modern drive. so if you want an old school mix its a great unit
If you had the space would you have the MBP and MBT in a chain?
I could make space. Just add another rack. But having both for what I use these units for as a silk box, there is really no point having both.
1. Gain knob is input gain or output gain? (By output i mean pre SFE)
2. Is the compressor redundant if i have ssl bus+? Can opt for mbt in that case.
3. Can this be used in dual mono for recording?

Pretty sure the SFE to comp button just reroutes the SFE so it comes before the compressor (for use as an overqualified sc would be my guess) You absolutely don’t need to hit that button to use the wonderful depth and width controls
Width and depth can be used in stereo and SFE. You can hear this in the audio demos. They work to great effect. Info below I just grabbed from Neves website.
SFE to Comp
This illuminated push-button switch routes the Depth and Width information to Channel A and Channel B compressor paths, respectively, allowing the user to manipulate the dynamic content of the Mid and Side information. When engaged, the width and depth controls allow the user to blend the amount of compressed Mid and Side information that is mixed back into the audio path. While SFE to Comp is engaged, the stereo compressor is only available for SFE dynamic processing and is not operational within the main audio path.

I prefer the dangerous and Vertigo to the MBP for compression. The Vertigo is an awesome compressor.

@MR_Cellarpop it depends on the song and the intention of the SFE. For me I would mostly use the MBP near the beginning of the mastering chain. The reason for this is that I have the Hum Audio LAAL limiter at the end of the chain which has a really good widener on it.
I agree the compressor may not be the best compressor for mastering, but it's a great 2 bus master compressor. For a 2 bus mix, I prefer it over the Master Bus Transformer as the compressor in that unit does not offer the flexibility of this unit. Plus the EQ on the MBT is limited and I have better EQ's though it is a decent eq
In sfe mode you still have the stereo channel link on. Why is that?
What do you gain from having stereo link off? I don't mid side compression especially not on the MBP. The compression when in SFE mode is very different to the way it reacts when not. If you look at the signal flow in the manual, you'll see why.
@@AudioAnimalsStudio yeah. I know the control signal is going through the compression in sfe mode. But for me it is not so clear what the control signal is and sounds like. Do you know? If you unlink the channels in sfe mode you see a complete different level on the a and b compressor.
@gwsound left in mid and right is sides. So you could applied different processing to the mid and side.

Funny side note: The Portico is for the "Master Buss", whereas the MBT is for the "Master Bus" ;-)
It was a printing error, replacement faceplates are being sent out for all MTB's that say buss. Haha can you imagine. I have no idea what the deal is with that.
There’s a hidden feature that’s not documented. The MBT has a very subtle de-esser.

Just checked the Block Diagram and you are right the Depth/Width control are first in the signal flow, but represented at the end on the faceplate. Interesting choice by Neve.
It's a confusing one if you haven't looked at the block diagram. Because it would suggest it's after and that the silk is part of the compressor and able to be used in mid side. One thing anyone can take from this video is always look at the signal flow in the manual. This could be a topic for another video.
The black mbp faceplate looks great. I wonder if Rnd would sell me one to swap out my white one.
It's possible they would. There's no difference between the two models.
@@AudioAnimalsStudio I think the white one has 250hz sidechain, whereas the black one has 125hz.

@bachelorgamer8001 yes, I guess you could. Wouldn't work in a mastering chain as your whole master chain would be Mid side. You could if you use the MBP on an insert but that way you are adding unessarry convertion.
Disclamer: I am not trolling this Video....I think this is an awesome unit....especially as a final analog mastering Unit...for anyones Studio.....
I have discorved using my own songs as audio experiments.....
If you use Amethyst 4 by Acustica Audio...with Karacter by Plugin and Alliance on Turbo Mode but only at 35% with ASH Grey D2...on your Analog mix
Then use the Amethyst 4 Pre in 2500 Bus Mode, again with Karacter (Master) Amek 250 EQ with THD up to 100 and Stereo with up to 120, Nebula Alex Bs Pres Colors and Saturation in Rupert Neve Silk Mode and Ash Again on final analog Master
that 100% Duplicates the Same Width, Tone, Lushness, and Sonic Weight on that Unit
Now...all the Plugins together Total.....$450-$500 but....thats not a bad Investment while your Saving up for this or a Portico
Whilst this may be true. One thing I will say when comparing that plugin process to the analogue sound of the MBP is that even if this was the case that you could achieve the same or similar sound. Which you certainly could. As an engineer using the MBP you gain that sound instantly and achieve your desired sound within minutes. Using a complex plugin chain as you mentioned will take far longer and be somewhat hit or miss.
Looks like you’re testing portico, not a mbp.
I'd advise googling Rupert neve master buss processor or MBP and see what comes up.

@lk0707 yeah the MBP is the Portco 2. Check the community post I posted earlier it has the schedule and order on it.
Like most Neve buss processors these days, it's OK but nothing to write home about (in my opion). It's just that for $4,700, there are so many better ways to spend that money, in my opion - things that would make more of a difference in the studio than pieces like this. If you gave me T-Racks One (a $99 software solution), I could get better, more drastic results than this $5,000 box (after tax). As you were turning the dials and changing things, it almost made no difference at all to making the song better. There wasn't so much impact or color that I said, "wow, I really need that processor." And there being a difference when A/B'ing doesn't mean that difference is needed, or actually improves the song. I'd actually be kind of upset if I spent 5gs on this and that's the result I got from it. No listener will ever notice the changes you're making (no listener that matters, anyway, such as the paying fans of the artist). Engineers might be impressed, but we don't make music to impress engineers. This is my honest take, however unpopular it may be.
Especially since, as you mentioned, the compressor isn't even really a mastering compressor in the sense that you yourself think of mastering compressors. Hence, you use other comps. If they can't give you a useful compressor in a $5,000 box, well.......I don't think I need to say much more about that.
But super silk for me makes it worth every penny. I don't tend to use the EQ or Comp or even width. For me it is just a very expensive silk box. To me that's worth a 5k to me it would be worth 10k because it does add a lot to the chain. I have better EQ's and better compressors later in the chain I will always prefer to use. However super silk and being to use both blue and red at the same time. Is really nice makes the box worth every penny. I do agree with you though. Had Neve brought out a £1500 version that was just super silk, I'd probably swap the MBT for it.
I have an MBP and it’s an extremely drastic difference on mixes. Talking about whether or not it’s worth the money or should I spend money other stuff is one thing but saying it doesn’t do that much and you can get better results with T Racks is one of the craziest things I’ve ever heard. You’re entitled to your opinion but dang that’s a helluva take. Maybe the TH-cam audio doesn’t do it justice, maybe his settings were a little tame, idk but it’s an absolutely incredible piece of gear that we use all day on all kinds of stuff.
