    I love how Sailor beats MB at their own game. I think the intent was to figuratively slap them around for their glamor they convey to the public.

    I've been thinking about getting a Sailor for a bit so this was very helpful in seeing it in action. Thanks for the time in doing this. I'll be viewing a lot more of your other shootouts. They're very good for familiarizing myself with the different pens that have similar features.

    Thanks for so careful a comparison of two similar but in the end quite individual pens. I'm owner of one not the other, and you provided many fair indications of what is being missed.

    Great video, and that was a "must do" shootout of course! Just look at them, so similar. I have the MB 146 and it is a magnificent pen. I found no flaws on this great writing instrument. The nib is just superb. Even though I haven't used a Sailor 1911 L, my gut says go for the MB, if the choice is between the two.

    The more I see you use Waterman Florida Blue in videos, the more I like it! I may have to get a bottle...
    The pens are eerily similar, though the gold trim seems more vibrant on the 1911. I'm leaning towards the 1911 for my first Sailor pen. :)

    Pefect shootout!
    As I understand, you started to use a new webcam for the writing samples?
    It gives better resolution.

    Hello ,
    I have been watching all of your posts and can not hide my admiration to your efforts . I have both pens but surprisingly the sailor which I have is F nib and it looks EEF nib in european measure . It is an excellent pen but its nib size is the only disadvantage "I did not know about the japanese measurement otherwise I should have selected wider nib . Both of them is fantastic and the speciality of MB that no other pen has makes it the perfect one .
    Thank you

    I come back to this quite often when I consider purchasing a Montblanc. I love my Sailor King immensely and am never sure as to whether a Montblanc will write like my Sailor. I appreciate showcasing the variety of Sailor nibs, but wish a more standard nib had been used for the Sailor perhaps. Should I instead be looking at Omas Ogiva (or Armando Simoni Club?)? I've tried the Pilot Custom and find them too light and "cheap" feeling by comparison. I wonder if you might have any recommendations to offer?

    Are the caps interchangeable? At posting and screwing in. I'm wondering because I'd really enjoy a zoom nib but I want that white star! haha

    I have both pens too. My 1911L has a H-MF nib and my 146 has an OM nib. I too like them both but can I just say I find the large ink capacity of integrated fillers as a disadvantage I want to be able to run a pen dry faster than that. I also prefer converters because they're cheaply replaced. I used perfect pen flush in my 146 and stripped all the lubricant. Oops. Had to pay the boutique $80 to grease my piston. Boo.

    I would like to see the Sailor with a similar nib a 1911 L with a broad vs the MB 146 b.. but they are both nice....

    I LOVE my Montblanc classique broad badass it never skips a beat and it's easy to clean. I also like a similar pen a platinum 3776 demonstrater Shoji as my EDC.

    Just seeing this for the first time. I'm more of a platinum/rhodium guy but can't help but notice how different the gold plating color is. The MB of course much more of a natural looking honey color of the gold plating consistent with solid gold 18k alloys. Never thought about it before but obviously Sailor has matched the plating to the 21k alloy they use for the nibs. Hence why it's so much more yellow in color. Interesting.

    MB has a lot of marketing hype around it, like the term precious resin, can someone define what makes a resin "precious" ?

  • @MrPleers
    @MrPleers 9 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    "'Precious resin" Isn't that a fancy word for plastic ?

    • @sbrebrown
      @sbrebrown  9 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Yup, that's the standard observation.

    • @opulan
      @opulan 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Theres nothing really "precious" about the resin apart from the fact you would have paid almost 1k retail for the pen which in a way could make it "precious"

    I would like to note that I found the Montblanc pen for $690 on the internet; the first one I saw at least. It's a beautiful pen, writes beautifully from what I've seen, but I don't have that money. xD You're review was amazing.

    Hi Stephen,
    what about a Fountain Pen Shootout #21 reloaded... It would be really cool to see how you disassemble the MB 146... What do you think?

  • @bluedew
    @bluedew 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think you can remove the nib of the 146 by twisting. It is pretty much the same as the Pelikan Mxxx series. I can remove my 149's by that. But I dun know how to disassemble the piston filler portion though.

    My father loves his 146, although I send him an Aurora Optima, my mum send him a MB220 and purchased a Lamy 2000 himself, I still found that he is very fond of his 146

    I think sailor has come out with a piston fill 1911 L. I believe it is called the Realo piston fill system. I also think sailor has a nib type for their king of pens line which is one nib made from 3 other nibs. It is a layered nib. I don't know much about it though....

  • @melodychest9020
    @melodychest9020 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The price difference between these 2 in 2022 is huge! The comparison would have been better with similar sized nibs. Cheers.

  • @jslallar
    @jslallar 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    1911L should be compared with MB147, not 146. Comparing two pens they should have similar width nibs and same ink so that flow, line variation, wetness etc can be compared on one to one basis.

    Thanks for the shootout! That MB 146 with B nib does lay down a lovely line :) I had a Zoom-nibbed Sailor 1911 but found that the nib wasn't useful for my writing purposes so I eventually traded it away. Great quality pen, though.

    Go damn it - is it just me or Mont Blancs have wider downstrokes? And its not due to nib being soft! Thats the 1 thing that keeps me from buying one.... A year has passed and i still dont know which one should i get.

    Hello,
    I have 2 pens from a company called X-PEN.
    I think is a israelian company.
    Overall a think are prety nice pens.
    Have you heard of them?
    On You Tube is not much information about them.

    Yes indeed, I live in Hong Kong, a few months ago I discover some Chinese fake 146 on some auction site, I just wondered Chinese started the product fake Montblanc piston filler now that amazed me quite a lot, as I remember I didn't see any fake Montlbanc Piston filler before, I thought producing the piston filler cost too much so the Chinese don't product fake Montblanc Piston filler, but it seem to be they started to product fake Montblanc piston filler now, how terrible.

    Honestly, modern Montblanc is no mach to Sailor and many other Japanese brands in term of writing experience. Many Montblanc pens skip like crazy after modern MB changed their nib tipping. Without Richemont MontBlanc won't have survived.

  • @he-man_

    I don't wanna sound rude or anything, but let's face it, Sailor 1911 is poor guy's Montblanc 146. I'm no MB fan boy, in fact I genuinely believe MB nibs, at least post-2000 have been getting worse, prima facie ceteris paribus I'd pick the sailor pens over MB ones any day. It's an interesting phenomenon, rather unnerving realising the level of our exposure to marketing ploys and even worse is our own state of oblivion regarding it.
