Great video and channel, as somebody particularly interested in later 20th century Asian history, I can’t express how welcome it is to find English language videos on Chinese history that aren’t wildly patriotic.

I had no idea you had a newsletter. I'm glad you mentioned it in the video. Most don't read the descriptions below 'Show More' lol.

You should end every video by asking for like/comment/subscribe.
Also you should pin a comment asking for topic ideas. You don't necessarily need to listen to the comments, but the boosted engagement will make the TH-cam algorithm will share your videos more widely.

Man, you are right. Whenever I watch TH-cam videos, I always felt a bit weird that video-makers kept doing that. Now I am on the other side and I got to do it. Sigh.

@@Asianometry Don't forget to add a visual like/comment/subscribe popup at the bottom of the video at various timestamps. It's natural that users (particularly mobile users) will forget to do this unless reminded.

How have the Chinese people not revolted against Beijing by now?

Beijing also delivers lots of economic growth, which makes the public happy.

For all it’s many faults (such as it’s dubious relationship with the truth, or it’s bellicose manner of dealing with other countries) it is impossible to deny that Beijing has managed to lift it’s people from being amongst the world’s poorest, to amongst the words richest, within the space of a generation. The vast majority of Chinese people have seen their quality of life improve, year after year, without fail for the better part of 30 years. It’s hard to argue with that. (particularly when the response to arguing is Tiananmen Square...)

same reason every developed country todate never had a rebellion even after the same thing happens to them, as long as it benefits the greater or the elites, hell you should just study how americans developed their lands, best example right there, let's not mention the native americans, but the black and various other colored and poor population, having their homes and lands constantly being labeled slums and demolished, one such example is new york.
