Not sure that I would agree that any party which is prepared to ignore sound advice on the basis of its leader having declared the person who provided it a "rightist" can accurately be described as "having got it right". The truth should be judged by historical records, not politicized narratives. They might have stumbled a bunch but they did get it right eventually. mao isn't perfect, no leader was. to understand china you have to look at it in context to the chaos and instability that led to leaders like mao. china was ruled by emperor and military dictators before the CCP tookover. There were no institution ready to address scientific and environmental challenges. the leaders themselves took up those challenges and implemented policies that often failed. China has gone through countless reforms to address these problems and todays china is the result of those reforms

But having read quite extensively about the man, I have altered my opinion. He did not have anything that one could recognize as a conscience, and allowed his ego to push him to harm an astonishing number of fellow humans. Remember Master Kong, the first recorded enunciator of that fundamental human principle: "Do not do to others that which you would hate done to yourself."
