All the songs you mentioned that you liked by Heart were late 80’s and 90’s hits, so I can only assume you haven’t listened their 70’s stuff. You really need to. By the way Dobie Gray’s big hit was the classic “Drift Away”.

Heart went through this period in the late 80s and early 90s where the only songs released as singles were MTV-designed pop songs. Some of these like "Never" and "Alone" were good, but this song was, in my opinion, their lowest of low from the MTV period. Their record company Capitol clearly wanted them to be something they're not and avoided the hard rock material they were known for like the plague when it came to singles. This song has little in common with the rest of the album Brigade and was an obvious attempt to get a hit single. People seem to either love it or hate it, and I tend to be in the latter category. Thankfully the rest of the album was not made up of derivative, calculated crap like this song.
The album this track came from was great, lots of great heavy rock. But this song is not only too pop sounding but the message in it is horrible. When this came out in the early 90s AIDS was almost at it's peak and there was no treatment or cure, so this message at that time was terrible. Pick up a hitchhiker, trade bodily fluids, dump him, and when you run into him again tell him the only reason you slept with him was to get pregnant because the guy you really care about shoots blanks. Ann Wilson said in an interview this song is "hideous" for it's message and I agree with her. I'll stick to Heart's hard rock and metal tunes and skip the MTV pop crap Just my opinion. Great reaction video, though, as usual.

This is one of those rare times that the music video was as good as the song, and maybe even is what propelled the song to chart success.

I think in this case “making love” wasn’t the act of sex. “Love” was the baby.
