Imagine if these two men made a game together.
Would love to get a new interview with both these guys now! :D
yes me 2, a new one 2018
@@vollegaming8818 yes me 3 in 2023
Love to see the makers of X:Rebirth along with Braben, Whitta & Roberts all sharing their expertise.
What an amazing Universe that would be to explore.
This interview was a really good idea, thanks Gary, Chris and David. I really want both your games and I put my money where my mouth is, twice, and dont regret a penny of it. Come on internets lets make sure of Elite Dangerous before Christmas. Seasons Greetings to all xFF
Right on Commander!
Needs more advertising, way more. Didn't know about this until wondered past it tonight by luck.
just here looking back at the videos here. funny how the 2 CEOs making the best space games ever are both from UK :P yes chris roberts was born in UK
I'm SO getting both games!
It's weird seeing Garry outside of GB/Tested. I forget that he does his own thing too!
An interactive, dedicated webpage with 3D models, video, and some hints about potential missions and storylines is a great idea. Anything to fire punter's imagination and empty their pockets! Like you, I'd love to see this game remade - I probably spent more time playing "Elite" than any other game, including the entire "Baldur's Gate" series. :-)
Really hope this gets funded. Might have to throw some more money at Elite: Dangerous once Christmas is out of the way :)
It's a good feeling isn't? Starved of space sims for so long... now we can gorge ourselves silly!
This will be the best game for years and years!!! Funded :)
Nice podcast. Pledged for both games as well ^_^
funded elite because i loved the original...respect the man behind it and am positive that it will be a great game....never knew about star citizen but it looks very interesting also:)
Chris Roberts looks so drunk. The stuff David has to say is much more interesting.
While he did have investors lined up, he hadn't actually accepted any deals, and now that the crowd-funding has been so successful, he's actually been able to say no to them, and if he does accept an investment deal, it's going to be on his terms and not theirs, and less power to the money men can only be a good thing for the game.
Btw, multiplayer was one of the best additions in his previous game Freelancer, and to this day there are still many dedicated fans running servers for it!
Nom nom nom Burp !!!
Ah, and by the way- I also played Elite Frontier on the Amiga.
Loved it.
I agree with Chris Roberts on the community interaction and frequent updates, it really did help with increasing enthusiasm and making the end goal achievable. Guys at Uber did a great job with planetary annihilation, Having mock ups of models and simulations is enough due to it all being pre-alpha.
As for elite being too complex for kids, that's very unfair. We had to battle with the current underwhelming tech as well as the games when we were young :)
He's now at 7,000,000$
This is crazy.
I funded both from the start - and I agree completely with David. Us PC users have been left out for too long. Bring back the REAL triple A titles for PC!
We need much more posts, or a dedicated web page with some kind of simple simulation for interacting with models of the famous cobra, adder, thargoid, etc... We need to advertise more and more to get more funding/pledging.... Lets make this happen.... ELITE has to be re-born... and I want to scream.... IT'S AALLLIIIIIIIIVVVEEE!!!!!! the moment I install ELITE DANGEROUS!!! LOL
I funded both, they both deserve a chance.
Congratulations, Chris, on obtaining so much funding for "Star Citizen". My question for Frontier Developments, and David is, how are they going to reach the younger gamers? Elite is getting huge support from it's old guard fans, but younger gamers are harder to reach. The videos so far have been very factual, but other game devs focus more on wowing their audience. Are we going to see more "showcase" videos featuring the graphics to capture their imagination?
good for Star Citizen
Nice interviews, thanks. Might be nice if Gary let's his guests speak a little more, in any interview it is the guests that should be doing 80% of the talking.
Differences:
Here is the concept, I need money to make it real - if you only give me money I'll try to listen to your input.
My dream game is a sandbox-project I've worked on all my professional life, I never thought I could finish it, but now with kickstarter there is a chance.
I do a remake of the best game I ever made. This time it's big: I got private equity and a big team, and nearing finish I'd have some extra hype from the crowd and a cushion of money to proof I was right all along.
Is there a way to bring up a list of videos on the channel without actually going to the channel page?
-hey, don't forget that there were pirates in the original Elite 2 which acted pretty much like the online trolls of today - soon as you jumped to a system they pounced!
Funded both, but Im a little upset on how the multiplayer for Elite will be handled. It may be a dream of mine, but with a task like Elite, most of the supporters are expecting a HUGE focus on multiplayer.
4v4 dogfights are OK(old)- but surely there are ways to have hundreds of players in the same universe- pirates, miners, human&AI!. High Server load? There are ways to lower that if servers change per space jump.
Fans of Elite have been waiting for something great, make us proud, Mr Braben!
Even a multiplayer game needs a good AI. If they start developing a single player game, with the option for multiplayer in the back of their heads, it shouldn't take much more time than only a singleplayer game. I personally am looking forwards to building a trade empire with my buddies :)
I worry about this "Private Equity".. who's pulling the stings? Will there be a Pepsi nebula?
But hey, i'm backing both games. Both Look awesome.
I agree completely that these games shouldn't be dumbed-down...what I mean by ""younger gamers" includes people their late teens and twenties! Games promotion has been heavily influenced by film over the last two decades, and the advertising has taken on a similar style. The more people Elite appeals to, the more likely it'll get made. Besides, I was fourteen when I learnt to fly in the original "Elite". Age doesn't necessarily make you an idiot.
What I was trying to say: if you prepare lots of stuff for the community / have lots of stuff to show, you probably didn't need the community funding in the first place... - and pretending to listen to them won't help much in the end. Expectations and hype can be too much...
There already are sandbox games out there for very specific audiences, but integrating multiplayer would often change the character of the game: look at Mount&Blade or X3.
zor?
Both games look very good. And both Chris and David have very informative and interesting things to say. The onething that I don't really like with this interview is the host kinda puts Chris in some awkward situations. While I know its probably not the hosts intention to do it. When the host is constantly talking about the over funding of SC and how he has so much more cash then what was expected his jokes sound pretty exaggerated and passive-aggressive-ish. I just kinda feel like Chris is always on the defensive when he is talking about SC. But it could just be me, and it could just be the way the host is. I have backed SC since kickstarter, and I just bought Elite today, so I am a supporter of both games obviously. I just feel like the host is kind of picking on - for lack of a better term - Chris because he had so much money at that point.
+8Bit I thought so to, as if it was provocative. If I was Chris, I'd never do an interview again with that guy. Its clear this was intended to mock Chris.
Two best games for the next year for sure. Love it. Both games will be awesome! Can't wait!>
But this Gary Witta is one strange dude, his interviews seem rather assumtious. He likes to make assumptions without having all the facts. Not fornd of his interviews at all.
There are good publishers though. THQ, Focus Interactive, Deepsilver
Gary, please let David and Chris speak without cutting them off constantly in the future...
I *was* a kid when I played Frontier. (13)
I *was* a kid when I played Civilization 1. (11)
I don't think kids today are any stupider than kids 20 years ago, the problem is the publishers don't understand this.
They're quite happy to push out drivel that wouldn't challenge the intellect of a gold fish so long as it makes them a few more $£€.
Publishers (& governments) need to realize that video games are *the* most influential teaching tool for many children.
Star Citizen is bad enough!!! Now Elite OMG!!!! My life as I know it
has ended!!!
No, I don't mean the multiplayer should distract from the single player at all. They should both exist. Multiplayer in games have certainly changed over the years. An epic game like Elite to have what is essentially just a minigame to play with your friends on is pathetic. - Full Elite mode too, please!
For both single AND multiplayer!
Best way is to look at a game like how Civilization 5 was made. I'm sure its possible- and would also increase game sales tenfold
Wow, from like the 7:30 mark to the 8:00 mark...saying that he was going to face major backlash from the backers for being late with the content releases and not wanting to do it was pure BS lies. Chris figured out how to do that real quick and hasn't stopped since. His feet were never even put close to the fire on that.
Wow, looking back on this years later. Elite Dangerous is a game and star isnt!!!!
*Spongebob voiceover*
Five years later...
phh, 7 million LOL
Getting rid of the publishers is a good idea. EA ruined Bioware and Bioware & EA ruined SWTOR.
7 millions in the kickstarter phase alone...plus what they sold after that...plus the in-game extras so far...and now the limited edition Cobra MKIII vintage skin selling at £10.
Geeee...talk about greed!
jojosmooth call of duty's budget was $100 millionand all they do is copy paste content, change up weapons, and add more zombies
star citizen is being made by multiple developers all over the world, and is going to take at LEAST another 2 years to make, (2.5 from when you made your comment) its a ridiculously ambitious game, with a lower budget than a generic copy pasted game like cod
jojosmooth And that just barely covered the development. You do know that making a game requires money, right?
SC cultists. We are now 3 years later. Do you still worship the hogwash that spills from Chris' mouth? Over $180M now crowd funded, this interview indicated that the (then) $7M was only a small portion of his funding with the bigger portion coming from investors. 2018 with no end even imaginable for the game. At what point do you lose your faith and realize that it is more economical for Chris to keep "developing" the game rather than publishing it? Perhaps when the monetary worship of the idea of SC dries up Chris will finally publish what he has. Gamers get bored with a game after awhile, however they will worship an idea of a game and throw seemingly endless amounts of money at it before it is completed.
Ffs. This guy needs to let Chris or David respond to each other.
Chris kept his words : Still Alpha = You can walk , sleep in your ship , go wherever you want ! BUT Not Optimized Game .
David lied on his words : No Space Legs , No Atmospheric planets , big world ! and repeated missions . Well Optimized Game .
If u ever read this David Braben ! Be A Man and Deliver what u told us .
@@gorfic__starshadow9801 still , there is no walking inside ships ... but fingers crossed for this be in the future road map !
I’m sorry but star citizen is a broken mess u add new things to the updates but don’t fix what’s broken how does this work
Game developers are getting increasingly pressured by the publishing companies to get their results.
Just have to look at Rome 2 Total War, pressured into making a better Total War and only 2 years to do it.
The Result was a Game with epic amount of bugs, low rating.
I'd rather Elite Dangerous take 5 years and have tiny number of bugs than 2 years under the pressure of the developer and be bug riddled mess with cool features taken out cause of time scale.
*****
Thanks Mike, you're very kind.
I'm going to buy Star Citizen and Elite Dangerous when they come out.
X:Rebirth I was disappointed in the amount of bugs it had after 7 years of development, but i'm confident they'll fix it.
2014 is going to be a great year for space sims, Mike. :)
That's exactly what there doing with Elite. Letting you buy a finished fully functional game. You can explore, trade, do some bounty hunting and so on.
After a while they will give you, let's say, planet landing and exploring of that planet. The next update gives you space station exploration.
The updates can and hopefully will keep on coming. Cause the possibilities are limitless in a universe that big.
According to David Braben, "The game is fully future proof."
The update way of keeping the game being better and 'more of it', gives the developers more time to make the game as it's supposed to be and not rush't in to completion with all the bugs and glitches.
Let's wait and see... :-)
Ha! Stumbled on this video today. SC is going to go down as the biggest scam of all time. ED did not have access to the same level of funding, and yet somehow has made a complete and awesome game. Development continues on the game with active interactions with their community. Chris Roberts is a crook compared to David Braben.
Man, you are like a broken record. Relax, Chris already said that SC will have a single player side of it, so if you want you will never, ever have to interact or see another live person. (Insert forever alone meme here)
