- FRANCE 24 spoke to several witnesses who were filming the initial fire that broke out after the first blast at the Beirut port when large stocks of ammonium nitrate also exploded, sending a huge shock wave out for kilometres on all sides.

I'm deeply sorry for those firemen who lost their lives in an attempt to put out the fire without realizing what was contained inside the pier cargo.
Well they wouldn't have known anything about it and certainly didn't feel any pain whatsoever

I still think about this from time to time. I feel so sad for the people who lost their lives. Many of them had no idea they were even in danger.
Same stuff in OKC killed 168 people. They all came from different backgrounds and had different lives... yet in a place like Oklahoma City, everyone was connected in one way or another. It was truly tragic. One of the youngest victims, Bailey, just had her first birthday the day before. (Refer to viral picture of firefighter holding baby- that was Bailey, she was deceased by that point). Nothings been the same since April 19, 1995.

@@Mmm_ka The OKC explosion was somewhat similar, but a big difference is that in OKC, that was a bomb set off intentionally by a domestic terrorist (Timothy McVeigh). The Beirut blast was an accident caused by negligence by the improper storiage of large amounts of ammonium nitrate fertilizer. An explosion more similar to Beirut happened in the United States in 1947 when a large ship filled with 2,300 tons of ammonium nitrate fertilizer caught fire at port in Texas City, Texas and eventually exploded.
My condolences for all Lebanese families who suffered from this explosion. I pray for God that the responsible for this tragedy will have pay for good. Justice will prevail. Greetings from Brazil.
There's no way anyone in the buildings or on the streets around could possibly have had a clue what was stored in the warehouse. I'd have been filming the fire too. I'm kind of amazed more people didn't die. That blast was unbelievable. A completely avoidable tragedy.
Considering the damage ammonium nitrate can do and the fact that is used in home made bombs, it needs to be more regulated or else banned. There’s been so many “accidents” with this chemical, to the point that it shouldn’t been considered accidental. Hope that makes sense.

I am from Cyprus and i live in the city of Limassol. We felt the shock wave until here,the windows was shaken and it felt like a small earthquake.
Lots of my fellow Lebanese died on that day. May GOD rest their soul

Every country's administration need to have more stringent measures for civilian safety rather than warming up their pockets and waiting for such a tragedy to happen... RIP to those who died...

I read that shock waves typically travel at about 1,192 km/h (740 mph)…faster than the speed of sound. I am totally amazed at how large of an area this covered, and so quickly. We must never allow this to happen again anywhere. I am still saying prayers for all affected.

Videos like these make me grateful my windows face the direction opposite of the local port. I never thought about this before, but I can only imagine what an explosion like that would do to the town I live in.
Explosions can occur anywhere there is a warehouse or factory. They don't happen only in port areas.

I watched live, 3 railcars of propane bleve. Nov 1979. Mississauga, Ontario Canada. You never forget the energy release in 2 seconds.
What hurts the most is that this could have been prevented. The authorities had known about the chemicals stored for a very long time. But as per usual in Beirut, the responsibilities were being bounced around, instead of being tackled head on… and a decision made about storage, removal or refusal to allow goods on Lebanese soil.

That puts the explosion at about 500 metres per second. I live a short distance from a refinery and a bonded warehouse where whisky is stored. Local fire service volunteers say if the refinery went on fire they would head to the refinery to put it out. If the bonded warehouses went on fire they would head away from the fire.

Objectively impossible for all to be OK.
Minimum Safe Distance for such an explosion is 3.5 kilometers at least. Thousands of people lived closer than that.

Never will be. This should have never happened. No matter how safe you think your facility is, if you are dealing with something that's extremely explosive, it needs to be far away from the population. This was a disaster just waiting to happen.
Doubt we will ever know the truth about what was really stored in the warehouses.

I am assuming that 2,750 metric tons of ammonium nitrate was involved, and that much is well able to produce the destruction caused in the blast, cf. the Texas City explosion of 1945. To ask the question of why an enormous quantity of explosive material was kept stored in a dense urban area for six years does not require positing mysteries. Ammonium nitrate is quite sufficient.
Maybe it was some overdue karma for the 1983 barracks bombing.

I saw some footage that was recorded from many miles away. The camera was pointed in the direction of the sun and you could see natural clouds overhead. When the blast wave went off, you could see it parting the clouds over a vast distance. It was if the clouds just vaporized in a widening circle.
The dude on the bike looked death in the eyes and said... not today, my friend.

If you see a shock wave coming towards you : yell incoming from the top of your lungs and then lay flat on your stomach with your hands covering your head.
You might save yourself and a few army vets.

If you see a blast like that you got just a few seconds depending on where you are to get away from the windows. I've seen one video, the one on top of a parking garage, where the guy runs back from the edge as soon as he sees the blast. Good reflexes ! This is a lesson everyone should remember as a lot of the injured seem to be from windows.
That's why I use Linux.
