Ernest "Doc" Watson's Jazz Funeral

  • A heavenly send-off for a beloved sax player who played with Olympia Brass Band and Preservation Hall Jazz Band, among many others. He mentored and influenced several generations of jazz musicians to ensure the future of the only indigenous musical form that originated in New Orleans and was the ambassador for all that is good about the musical and social traditions we are so proud to share.

    When people ask me why I live in New Orleans...with a lil tear in my eye I tell 'em, when you die in most cities, they give you a funeral. In my city, when you die, you get a parade (-;]

If i die, just bury me in the woods, after you took out every organ that is still useable, where it is atleast somewhat useful

    The tall guy with the glasses and towel has so much rhythm that I could watch him all day......and I do watch this several times a day. I wish he could know how much he's cheering up an old woman who has no rhythm whatsoever. He's the best, and I so appreciate this wonderful jazz band, and how they celebrate their funerals.

      The ancient Egyptians actually did something similar. They'd have a mostly celebratory funeral procession, with two female mourners following the casket representing Isis and Nephtys.

    This is just really beautiful! I'm from Washington, DC and I have to say that looking at this is a bit of a culture shock for me because we don't do this at funerals up here. I never seen anything like this especially at a funeral. I also been to New Orleans in June of this year and I was in the French Quarter and all that live jazz music just really spoke to my soul and moved me. Just indescribable. Beautiful music and beautiful city!

    This reminds me of when the Preservation Hall Band came to our town. They finished with When The Saints Go Marching In as they would coming back from the cemetery. Folks got up and started dancing towards the stage and the guy I was with opened his umbrella and was pumping it up and down in the grand New Orleans style. That really scared one guy dancing around. We ended up on stage behind the band dancing around and very happy. The band had huge grins. One of the best nights of my entire life.

      If you choose this song on a funeral here in Germany, the priest would probably throw you out of the church, because here, it is known under the title "ja, mir san mitm´Radl da" (Translate: yes, we came her with the bicycle....) not many here know it´s origin title.
      But: this is what a funeral should be like, not to be sad about a loss of someone, but to be happy about have known someone like him/her.

      Actually Rock and Roll comes from R&B that was derived from the call and response style music such as this video and African American spirituals. Rock & Roll as a music genre and form is rather nascent only having been created in the 1940's. If you look at the musical form of Hip Hop is more akin to the strong base beats of this kind of music than R&R.

    • @anitabrownjazz
      @anitabrownjazz 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In the early 20th century, at the advent of jazz in New Orleans (and in other American cities) the women's styles included long dresses and often used a "parasol" to shade them from the hot sun. A parasol is a light colored umbrella, often decorated, as it is not for rain. A dance called a "Cake Walk" was done by women in this period dress using their parasols. It's a high-stepping dance. An example of Cake Walk and this kind of attire exists in the musical "Hello Dolly" and I think "The Music Man" too. This is the result of a century of development. The "umbrellas" have become celebratory. They sell decorated umbrellas for weddings, other occasions, American football games and other celebrations.

Normally in Traditional New Orleans Jazz Funerals, only hymns are played when the body of the deceased is present and before the body is deposited in the grave. After burial the songs played are secular like "Didn't He Ramble", St. James Infirmary, etc
