    While suction stroke, due to fast movement of piston, the amout of air/charge sucked inside tghe cylinder is a bit lesser than the volume dislaced by the piston. The ratio of the actual charge sucked inside the cylinder to the volume dispalced by the piston is called as volumetric efficiency of engine. Learn About Volumetric Efficiency of an engine by this easy to understand lecture.

    sir we increase the time of intake valve to remain open while the piston starts to move upward don't it cause the air-fule mixture to come out through the intake valve which is still open?
    (question is from the last part of the video 2nd method to increasing the volumetric efficiency)
    thanks

      @@Dr.AmitMandal sir today was my internship day and I told my professor these two ways to increase volumetric efficiency he do agree with the first only which was just to increase the intake opening and valve of engine but disagree with the second way and he told me about turbocharger instead.

    Elasticity of gases affected by restriction of flow is the primary cause of loss of VE. However, along with elasticity comes compressability. Chrysler Corporation in the late 1950s used this this to measurable advantage on their RB 413"² engines with the Cross Ram option, which used long, fairly straight intake runners that used the momentum of the moving intake charge to compress it when the intake valve closed, negating some of the frictional loss of the valve and its port when the intake reopened for the next cycle. These engines, using dual 650 CFM Carter AFB caburetion, approached the magic number of one BHP per in², partly due to this charge compression feature of its long intake runners. While not as efficient as the original "hemis," the Cross Ram got close, but the hemi was still better at high RPM.

    What is the formula to calculate swept volume/stroke volume.
    I am confused that in my book it had mentioned that
    Vs = A.L and
    Vs = A.L.n.K
    Were
    Vs = swept volume
    A = area of cylinder
    L = stroke length
    n = no of explosions
    K = no. of cylinders.
    Which formula is correct and why?

  • @jimpiaz9537
    @jimpiaz9537 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You are 100% wrong it is not always just less than the size of the cylinder if you let the intake valve closed about 30 or 40 degrees after bottom dead center momentum of the charge will continue to Pile in the cylinder. You could develop a volumetric efficiency of 150 if you get your cam timing correct

    DEAR SIR ,U should use amout of air used instead of charge..!
    Because volumetric efficiency is defined as the volume flow rate of air into the intake system divided by the rate at which the volume is displaced..!!
    It is irrespective of the engine wheter it is SI or Ci or gas engine , volumetric rate of air flow is what to taken into account and not the mixture flow..!!
    Hope u will take it in a positive way..!!
    Nice job sir..!!
    Thanks

    • @Dr.AmitMandal
      @Dr.AmitMandal  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That is air standard volumetric eff. However in practical case for SI engine , taking charge as fluid , it is more practical approach....

    Sir, If we use a turbocharger or supercharger, then compressed air at high pressure is supplied at the inlet port of the engine. Does it mean that it also increases the thermal efficiency of the engine?

    the tym delay for which air takes to come inside the cylinder is because of the pressure difference..
    The pressure at which the inlet valve opens is above atmp pressure because of the small amount of burnt gasses present on the clearance volume..
    the pressure of that burnt gasses are above atmospheric pressure,so to achieve that pressure to drop below atmosphere some tym is taken and once that pressure drop below atm then the air stars to enter inside the cylinder..

    • @Dr.AmitMandal
      @Dr.AmitMandal  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That too is a reason, like same when th cylinder becomes hot than incoming air, start expanding promptly when entering inside the cyclinder which leads to less mass accomodating inside however chief way to define vol eff is as i have mentioned in the video.

    • @Smiteshable
      @Smiteshable 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    One question, if the piston is in BDC and which is after the expansion stroke , what will happen to the unburnt fresh charges, which will enter by closing the inlet valve at a time more than the actual closing time?

    The author of this video completely misunderstands the meaning of the term "Volumetric Efficiency" when applied to an IC engine. A piston engine is a positive displacement pump, the pumped volume is defined by the bore/stroke and never changes. VE is a mass ratio, not a volume ratio. The correct equation is:
    VE=(MASS_actual)/(MASS_theoretical)
    And there is no such thing as "vacant space" under the air charge in the cylinder. This very concept defies physics and fluid dynamics.
