  • Morse Test , Indicative power of an engine and Rope Brake dynamometer;
    The Morse test is a method for measuring the indicated power of a multicylinder engine. It is named after its inventor, Herbert Morse. The test is conducted by running the engine at a constant speed and measuring the brake power with all cylinders firing. Then, each cylinder is cut out in turn and the brake power is measured again. The difference in brake power between all cylinders firing and with one cylinder cut out is the indicated power of that cylinder. The sum of the indicated power of all cylinders is the total indicated power of the engine. In this lecture, your would be able to learn how to perfom the test. The literature of Morse test is as dollows
    The Morse test is based on the following assumptions:
    1) The frictional power of the engine is constant, regardless of the number of cylinders firing.
    2) The mechanical efficiency of the engine is constant, regardless of the number of cylinders firing. The frictional power of the engine is constant, regardless of the number of cylinders firing. The Morse test is a simple and relatively accurate way to measure indicated power. However, it is not as accurate as other methods, such as the air-standard cycle analysis.
    Here is a step-by-step procedure for conducting a Morse test:
    1)Run the engine at a constant speed.
    2)Measure the brake power with all cylinders firing.
    3)Cut out one cylinder and measure the brake power again.
    4) Repeat steps 3 and 4 for each cylinder.
    5)Calculate the indicated power of each cylinder as the difference in brake power between all cylinders firing and with that cylinder cut out.
    6)Sum the indicated power of all cylinders to get the total indicated power of the engine.
    The Morse test is a useful tool for engine engineers and technicians. It can be used to troubleshoot engine problems and to optimize engine performance.
    The indicated power of an engine is the total power produced by the combustion of fuel in the cylinders, excluding any friction, heat, or other losses in the system. It is a measure of the engine's potential maximum output power.
    Indicated power is calculated using the following equation:
    Pi = Pme x L x A x N / 2
    where:
    Pi is the indicated power (kW)
    Pme is the mean effective pressure (kPa)
    L is the stroke length (m)
    A is the bore area (m^2)
    N is the engine speed (rpm)
    The mean effective pressure is the average pressure on the piston during the power stroke. It is calculated by measuring the area enclosed by the pressure-volume diagram of the engine cycle.
    Rope brake dynamometer:
    A rope brake dynamometer is a device used to measure the power output of an engine or motor. It works by applying a frictional load to the engine or motor shaft, and measuring the torque and speed of the shaft. The power output can then be calculated using the following equation:
    Power = Torque * Speed
    A rope brake dynamometer typically consists of a pulley or flywheel attached to the engine or motor shaft. A rope is wrapped around the pulley or flywheel, and the other end of the rope is connected to a weight. As the engine or motor rotates, the rope pulls on the weight, creating a frictional load. The torque applied to the shaft can be measured by measuring the tension in the rope. The speed of the shaft can be measured using a tachometer. if friction power depends on W then
    when 1st cylinder cutoff then how we can say that friction power is same........
    and secondly if friction power is same then why angular speed decrease..
    and again after that to maintain w (angular speed) , tension inside the rope is decrease to maintain the same friction Power as we got without cut-off the cylinder
