Yes, you just listened to a musical masterpiece. Back in the day we would go to the stereo store and this is the track we would listen to to test the speakers and turntables.
This entire album is simply a masterpiece. It is as close to "sonic perfection" as you could get. Glad to see you reacting to Steely Dan. Great reaction. Take care....
Steely Dan is not your typical "pop" band. Some songs are so "ear friendly" while others take a multitude of listens to completely comprehend. That's what makes this group legendary. No one comes close to them. They are in a whole category by themselves.
One name: Stevie Gadd, one of the greatest drummers still alive, did Aja in one take; unbelievable. I got this album when it was first released and its been one of my favorites ever since. Aja is a song that grows on you, every time you hear it something different jumps out, a masterpiece; easily Steely Dans best album.
The comment the gentleman made, saying that it was like being in a bus and looking out the window, was perfect. All the different things you can see as you go. Wonderful.
You need to listen to this piece several times to really appreciate it. There are so many layers to this music with unequaled musicianship at each layer.
Steely Dan are the most Perfect playing and songwriting band the ever existed. Every minute detail note in their music is perfectly placed.....they simply play perfect music...even though they are considered a Jazz/R & B/Funk/Rock fusion band.....i consider the band an "Art Music" genre. Like Yes...there were some band that played music so perfect that is was not considered music but "Art' We called it "Art music." I have this album....every song is perfect. The song "Aja" is such a high tier "Art" in music form......great reaction.
Perfect description by Andre, on a bus looking at everything. And when Domica replied by following one thing, and another pops up, Andre says you turned down another street. lol This song is a perfect blend of rock n jazz, that makes jazz more listenable.
So jazzy. So smooth. Love it. It swings. Definitely hear this song again (and again). Then you can relax to it. But I love the 'riding the bus looking out the window' metaphor. Beautiful.
Always expect the unexpected with Steely Dan 😁 when you listen again then you realize that the perfect notes from the perfect instruments are in the perfect places where they needed to be.
This is one of those songs that I cannot believe that no one has requested up to this point. CLASSIC album. Classy music. For your own selves, this is an album to enjoy playing in your home.
Your observations about the complexity of the music is so dead on. I was in college when this album came out and was (and still am) a huge Steely Dan fan---I owned all of their albums. Always looked forward to the next SD album, and then AJA came along and with the notable exception of Deacon Blues (from this album), a song like Aja also took a bit of replays to get comfy. Thanks for sharing!
This isn't a song you fall in love with in one sitting. It's more like an epic movie you watch over and over through the years, and each time discover a bit more of its brilliance.
Think about this. Plan on cooking a special meal for two. Play this while you create the perfect dish. Sipping on a fabulous glass of wine while cooking. Just you, your glass of wine and this song. Now that's heaven.
Aja is on my top 10 Steely Dan songs. It sounds like three different songs into one. So much going on. Thanks for reacting to Steely Dan, my favorite band.
"Dime-a-dance girl" was a term for a dancer in a taxi-dance hall, where patrons paid ten cents each to dance. The term "taxi dancer" comes from the fact that the dancer's pay was based on how long they spent dancing with a customer.
Senior in college when AJA hit the shelves. Would listen to the vinyl recording with Sennheiser headphones while stretched out on a couch. Pure Heaven !!
This is one of my favorite albums of all times. Each song is perfection. The whole album is worth a listen. "Black Cow", "Deacon Blues", "Peg", "Home at Last", "I Got the News", and "Josie" round out the playlist on this album.
Steely Dan, to this day, is on my regular playlist. Read an article once in Rolling Stone declaring them the least influential great band of their time. Why is that? Because their sound could not be emulated. The layering and complexity, yet timelessly listenable is unmatched.
The drummer is actually one of the three you watched in the Buddy Rich Memorial video you did recently. Steve Gadd was in the center of the three drummers. Great reaction! Thank you for the entertainment.
This is challenging, sophisticated music. I loved it from the start. But, I have many lifetime musician friends who didn't, and still don't, like it. I am not a fan of jazz, but SD was a bridge for me and the AJA album is the epitome of this. In any case, I always enjoy the MerchantOfAlba reactions. Happy New Year to you and thanks for all your great videos.
Yes. But "fills" don't span 8 measures. At their length, these are solos. (A "fill" is a drum flourish that typically comes at the end of a bar, or accents a change in the song structure or phrasing.
It's not a "reaction" - rather a true feeling: The summer of 1978, the Hollywood Bowl in LA . . . was a young man - so in love - but afraid to ask her to marry! (stupid kid I was) Still, I asked!!! And oh, that soft night & life spent with my beautiful wife, now passed . . . would have that long-ago Steely Dan kinda night again! Blessings to you, Andrei & Dominika! Live and love "soft-hard & slow-easy!" Young Andrei, never take for granted every moment that your beautiful Dominika glances and smiles at you! (even if you don't see her - she does!) So, once in-a-while - take out the trash, make her a morning tea, a yummy "burned" dinner (and ask for a kiss of forgiveness? . . . smell what I'm cookin' Andrei? 😊,) and most importantly - just sit with her for a soft chat! PS: Put this song on . . . or a billion other "OLD" ones - and you will both be very pleased (as I am in Cambria, CA. USA with my love's memories)
To fully enjoy this track, you must clear your head and close your eyes and let the music take you by the hand. Sometimes you have to let art just flow over you. Don't try to find logic in it. This is a masterpiece of composition and musical artistry. The entire album is a masterpiece. Try "Home at Last", also on the Aja album. BTW, "when all my dime dancing is through, I run to you" is a reference to the dance halls in America in the 1930s and 1940s when you could buy a dance with a lady for a dime. Servicemen on leave were especially fond of these clubs.
I only see a few comments about drummer Steve Gadd. This is considered one of if not the best drum fills performance in a pop/rock record. He did it in one or two takes. I have seen both mentioned. Steve did so many sessions in that period. There is a cool story when the track was being finally produced and Steve was playing in a different room in the same studio and they brought him over to hear the final production. **** He was feeling good. I said, “Sit down, I want to play you something.” We played him “Aja,” which was finished. He sat right between the Altec 604 Utility [speaker] cabinets. It was great sounding. The track ends and he said, “Wow, who is playing drums?” Donald, Walter and I, Roger Nichols and Elliot, are just looking at each other. Because he wasn’t kidding. I say, “You are, stupid!” He went, “Really? I’m a motherfucker!” It’s the best laugh we had in all of the years. ****
This album might be considered their 4th Generation music... more? Their fans will eventually insist, "Go back and devour all albums in order and realize how much they've changed." And not really - they simply replaced influential session musicians and composed their own music with or without those helpers. But the transformation into a "let's be influenced any any and everyone" was also part of their musical education from earliest times. Don't we all? We hear one musician or band, love them, then somewhere here another and love them, too. We don't discard previously enjoyed music - we just add new music to our histories. So, in a way, Steely Dan is like all of us - or we, them. Their odyssey is engaging - come along, find new reasons to listen to the same ol' song - always discovering some new hidden treasure.
Steely Dan, Joni Mitchell, and a few others are Long Driving Artists. I can take one album and drive 10 days with it, and only it, discovering new gems each time. If you ask me my favorite song at the first, I will list another favorite every few days.
You should find the documentary on steely Dan. Its fabulous, tells the story of how they put things together in an album... its really vool....hiring sometimes whole different sets of musicians to get the sound they want..
Good reaction to what can be a difficult 1st time listen. Aja is an incredible album, very complex and with strong jazz influences. The recording is meticulous and the musicianship impeccable. And yet it can take a bit of getting used to. Once you get it, youre hooked for life. I would suggest you listen to ALL of the album to put the title song into context. If I was to be stranded on a desert island for a year, and was allowed only one record to play, Aja, the album, is what I would take. Always love your intelligent and insightful reactions along with your great personal chemistry. A very happy and prosperous new year to you both. From Alba to Alba. Slainte m'hath!! Jim
Great Music! Probably one of my favorite guitar solos of the ROCK era is their song MY OLD SCHOOL!! MOA being busy! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎🎸🤟🏼 OHHH still recommending Leo Sayer 💕 WHEN I NEED YOU 💕 and YOU MAKE ME FEEL LIKE DANCING!!!
The way you are describing your feelings, especially Dominique, is exactly how I feel About complex prog rock. I love to have a strong groove, and get carried away by it. Prog is not that kind of experience and doesn’t try to be. I DO love Steely Dan though, and AJA. I guess I just get my head into a jazz space and go with that.
I saw him in a small venue this year with a hand-picked band. He was superb. I had never gone to a show specifically to see and hear a drummer before. It was great to watch. For the finale, he pulled out all the stops, and we were clapping and yelling. And that was an older jazz crowd. 😁😏
I think this song, in particular by Steely Dan, crosses the line from Jazz/Rock Fusion into straight up Jazz. But I can't say that it is my favorite from them.
One doesn't listen to Aja, you simply ride it, as it takes you on a melodic and unexpected journey. Steely Dan, IMO, is their own genre. Try "Peg" for a more predictable experience. EVERY song on this album is fire!
A little drumming might help, Dominika. The beat you feel at the beginning of the song stays there for the whole song. They don't use it always, playing on the off-beat or using triplelets, but the beat remains the same. Try clapping your hands to the beat and keeping that beat going during the changes. It always comes back to that beat. ❤Aja ☮❤🎶

I was intrigued by the posting; I guessed that Dominika would have difficulty with the first listen and that Andrei would get there quicker only because the composition is so unusual and seems like a series of compositions barely related to each other at first listen and very difficult to groove to.
Yes, you just listened to a musical masterpiece. Back in the day we would go to the stereo store and this is the track we would listen to to test the speakers and turntables.
Still is many people's standard!
The only thing I know about steely Dan is that George carlin ripped into them.
@goddesssalem4842
George pretty much ripped into everything and everyone.
@@welcomemachine6580
Correct.
I almost forgot about that.
Due to your post, I'm going to listen to it, now that the DAC is installed.
Thank you.
The older I get the more I enjoy everything Steely Dan! Listen to Steely like 3 days a week while drinking Scotch Whiskey 😊
This entire album is simply a masterpiece. It is as close to "sonic perfection" as you could get. Glad to see you reacting to Steely Dan. Great reaction. Take care....
Hi guys the best saxophone drum solos Wayne Shorter on saxophone 🎷 and Steve Gadd on drums my favorite steely Dan song
A brilliant industry changing tune that goes beyond description because of the complexity. The drum solo takes over the tune with explosive drama!
This won the Grammy for best produced album of the year.
Its head music- put it on, close your eyes and drift along. 🌻♥️
Every SD track is performed to the very highest standard. Aja, however, is perfection. Not just the title track; the whole album.
Steely Dan is not your typical "pop" band. Some songs are so "ear friendly" while others take a

I love Steely Dan, but I must say, that I love you to aswell. Beautiful warm-hearted people. I wish you were my neighbors 🙏❤️

This album is a Gem, it is sophisticated! Other musicians would refer to this group as one of the most influential groups around!
Perfect description by Andre, on a bus looking at everything. And when Domica replied by following one thing, and another pops up, Andre says you turned down another street. lol
This song is a perfect blend of rock n jazz, that makes jazz more listenable.
Very much a trip, a journey, and our ears are all the invitation we need to tag along. Wheeee
This is absolutely glorious music. A masterpiece.
When was a teenager in the 70's I was not an immediate fan of this band. It took me another 40 years to appreciate this
This song and album are a masterpiece!
It is said of Steely Dan that they were "your favorite band's favorite band."
Steely Dan is a deep well full of sweet waters 💧 🎶🎵✨️
Enjoy the drink.
So jazzy. So smooth. Love it. It swings. Definitely hear this song again (and again). Then you can relax to it. But I love the 'riding the bus looking out the window' metaphor. Beautiful.
I loved Steely Dan!! Such a Great band!!❤❤❤
Give her the time she needs. She'll come to LOVE this song in time.
Always expect the unexpected with Steely Dan 😁 when you listen again then you realize that the perfect notes from the perfect instruments are in the perfect places where they needed to be.
Such a beautiful album!!!
How many times have you heard it? "Uncountable" is my answer. Same?
This is one of those songs that I cannot believe that no one has requested up to this point. CLASSIC album. Classy music. For your own selves, this is an album to enjoy playing in your home.
Imagine their surprise when they find out where "Steely Dan" got their name.
This is the example of a perfectly produced album
This album is in my top 10 of all time!🎖🎖🎖
Another great reaction...Thanks! ❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥
Have a happy new year to you and the puppies!

yes, the lyrics 'when my dime dancing is through' definitely needs explaining to younger generations!!
It's so wonderfully unhurried. 🎶🎵🎶🤗

This is isn't just one of the most iconic songs of the 70's but ever!!

Genius!! 👏👏👏🔥👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
You guys hadn’t played this yet? I don’t believe it, the whole album is just fantastic to hear. Try it.😊
this song is EXTREMELY complex and full of changes..
And fantastic 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
I loved the analogy of driving through the city and going down a different street. I never thought of it that way...but it makes a lot of sense.
You have to listen to the whole album! It'll grow on you! Complexity at it's finest!!❤ from California...
Lyrics of Steely Dan , are abstract, like a good poem..so on your own time, give this musical masterpiece a few more listens. 🙏♥️
Aja is a women. His woman who gives him love and comfort when lifes stresses begin to overwhelm him. “I run to you”
To paraphrase Robbie Robertson "You may like it now. But you'll learn to love it later."
I can’t put into words how much this song touches my soul. Thank you 🫶 p.s the whole album is amazing!
A great album. Memories!❤❤

For drummers or kids who wanted to be in the 1970s, the part starting at 7:31 here changed their lives.
now you're reacting to one of my all-time bands !

Arguably, one of the greatest drum fills in history...it's just Steely Dan
Yes. But "fills" don't span 8 measures. At their length, these are solos. (A "fill" is a drum flourish that typically comes at the end of a bar, or accents a change in the song structure or phrasing.

You should definitely check out this entire album!!!!!!
Yeah, they play in different time signatures. Often.
Steve Gadd is the drummer on this song and he was one of the drummers in the buddy rich tribute reaction you did .He was the the third drummer and the older gentleman
My advice with Steely Dan (and early Yes) is do not concern yourself with the lyrics the first few times.
Great channel!
When he is ready to stop pursuing worldly things Aja will always be the tranquil constant he can run to. Dime dancing refers to paying some one to dance with you and in this song may be a bit more than that.
This song requires many listens to fully appreciate.
Great reaction guys!
All the best in the New Year from 🇨🇦! Looking forward to more Zeppelin in 2025. 🎉🎉🎉
