Well, it's my favorite from them. But it's not leaps ahead of many other great tracks from them. I mean, it's splitting hairs. They have so many damn good tracks, and aren't we the lucky ones that get to enjoy them all.
One of only a few groups that if you asked 10 of their fans their favorite Steely Dan album , you are most likely to get at least 4 different answers and possibly more .
In college I knew a guy who Steely Dan was his favorite band. We were waiting for the bus on side of hill smoking something. Suddenly a professor stepped over us. We were listening to steely Dan. He smelt what we were smoking and said nobody smokes on this campus. We were terrified. He paused looking back and forth at us. He then grabbed the joint and took a big puff and said without me. And then said I love steely dan.
Similar thing happened to me, except I was in the Army and my first night in a barracks in Germany. We were all sitting in a circle on the floor passing a joint around and I had just taken a toke and in walks a staff Sargent, Of course froze. I knew I had blown it on my first day. And then he sat down beside me and said " are you going to pass that or not.
A black cow is a blended drink made with vanilla ice cream and root beer, similar to a root beer float: Ingredients: Vanilla ice cream and root beer Preparation: Blend the ice cream and root beer until smooth and creamy Garnish: Top with whipped cream and a cherry The drink gets its name from the contrasting colors of the root beer and ice cream, which are reminiscent of black and white cows. You can also make a black cow with other ice cream flavors. To make the drink, you can: Fill a tall glass about 1/3 full with root beer Add 1 scoop of ice cream Pour in about ¼ cup more root beer You can also add chocolate syrup to the bottom of the glass before adding the root beer.
🌸 I've been watching you for years now and I'm just want to let you know I'm sending good vibes your way.... and this is one of my favorite steely Dan songs
Love Steely Dan. Especially this album - Aja! When my husband and I used to have friends over for dinner back in the 80s. We would often have this album playing low in the background..it was good entertaining music and set a good vibe!
Hey Jay. I have played this at least once a week since it came out. Never gets old, as the more you listen, you'll hear more in every track. Happy new year to you ALL HERE. Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay.
Well, with Steely Dan, you had a combination of, great song writers, great composers, great arrangers, killer session players, meticulous attention to detail, and an uncompromising effort to get on tape precisely what they envisioned a particular track to be. They were greater than a sum of their parts. It was just...magic.
The kings of collaboration, it was just 2 guys but they would bring in a dozen people for different songs on the same album. Always known for their attention to detail.
I loved watching this reaction video to Steely Dan's Black Cow! It's always so fun to see someone experiencing their music for the first time. The song has such a smooth vibe and the instrumentation is fantastic. Can't wait to see more reactions to classic songs like this!
"Chill, kicked back" spot on. Played their tunes a lot on Sunday mornings. Always for my brunch crews where Steely would fill the background while conversations dominated but occasionally melted away when we joined in with a chorus or were taken to groove by an instrumental phrase❤❤❤
My first year in college my Arranging 101 Professor handed out the sheet music for Home At Last. Then said...Learn this piece its the only thing we will be studying this semester...That was 1978.. Aja is a Masterpiece that will be studied for years....
Listening to Steely Dan is like watching Fred Astaire dance (and if you haven’t seen that Jay, check a clip on TH-cam)- it seems effortless, but just unfolds like magic. This kind of music is sorely missing in today’s music scene! One of a kind group indeed
Everything Steely Dan did was great. For some reason, people refer to their music as "yacht rock" which, in my opinion, is insulting and quite the opposite of what their music often represents (i.e., the seedier side of life.) Jay, you might also check out Donald Fagen's solo stuff, especially his first solo album "The Nightfly." It's a classic.
check out the clip where the film makers of the doc on HBO/MAX contacted him via phone to see if they could interview him. His response was to them was awesome!
"Yacht Rock" yeah exactly, to hell with those silly labels. I second "The Nightfly" suggestion, Jay, if you're reading this. Can't go wrong with any track on it.
A "black cow" is an outdated name for a Coke or Root Beer float local to New York City in the 50's. Kinda like an egg creme, one of those desserts you could really only get in certain neighborhood malt shops back in Becker and Fagen's day. It's all about a guy who sees his ex in one of their old haunts, and he finds all of the sorrow and regret he felt over the relationship ending is just... gone all of a sudden. A "time heals all wounds" sort of thing. ☮️❤
Jay, I didn't know you before. I do miss the inner actions but I'm finding that the music you have found has a way to keep you in a place where you can be lifted up and all can heal together ❤️ 🎉
I have been requesting this song by Steely Dan for 3 years because this sound that the band creates here in the song created a "signature sound, style, and brand" for the band that every time anyone hears that sound that person would know immediately that it is "Steely Dan." Steely Dan started started structuring and composing their songs based in Jazz, Soul music of the 60's or 70's, and Funk of the 60's and early 70's. I think you are going to really like this signature style.
Steely Dan does what I call "varied instrumentation" in that from the beginning of the song to the ending you often hear different instruments being added during the song plus nobody else sounds like Steely Dan on vocals.
There is no one like Steely Dan. They are their own Genre
That's the truth! 🎉❤
I came here to say the same thing!
Jordan, so glad you're continuing on with the music. All the best to you and Amber.
This track from Steely Dan is a gem. Happy New Years everyone.
Happy New Year to you as well.
This WHOLE ALBUM: FIRE!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
That's what I said! Yes IT is!!
Agreed!
Steely Dans "Aja" is considered by a large cross section of the music community to be a GOAT album.
I agree!
💯
Solid album, but not sure it was even top ten of '77.
Well, it's my favorite from them. But it's not leaps ahead of many other great tracks from them. I mean, it's splitting hairs. They have so many damn good tracks, and aren't we the lucky ones that get to enjoy them all.

It is their masterpiece album for sure!
Every song on this album is worth a reaction.
Agree! Aja is my favorite album of theirs! I bought pretzel logic in 1974 at Ft. Polk during basic training.
@@MarkSteele-bh3hb Aja is considered to be one of the best albums ever made, but 'The Royal Scam' is almost a tie for me.

Steely Dan is loved by people with a sophisticated ear for music. The more people listen to music, the more they appreciate the Dan.

Steely Dan is musical perfection.
One of my all-time favorite Steely Dan songs. The entire Aja album is epic
Steely Dan: indefinable, brilliant,genius.
Steely Dan, Doobie Brothers… Two of the greatest bands from the 70s music is still good all these decades later‼️👏👏👏‼️
Well they were interchangeable lol!!
This entire album is great. No matter how many times you play the entire album, it never gets old.
I MISS Amber but Rob Sguad still my favorite. Jam on Jay!
Sguad?
This was played on the R&B stations in Chicago when this was out. The entire "Aja" album is 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Root beer and coffee ice cream is how it is done. Made one up last week fwiw.

Love Deacon Blues

Always clean, always smooth, always perfect.

One of my favorite Steely Dan songs! As the track fades out, they're singing "Siamese", which is mysterious and goofy at the same time.
