car scissor jack will sort that out under the shower tray like you said Like you , i dont like to walk away from a job like that blocked waste but i guess sometimes you have to because they didnt seem to think of the end result of loading paint down the pipework good luck with the running it will help clear your head once you get in to it
im gonna be honest I am so critical of other peoples work but you are by far my favourite plumbing related channel. Love you honesty and realistic approach keep up the great work.
All your repair work is excellent. You get it back to functionality and the customer can decide if they want to reinstate with new. Too me, looks like that shower tray had been messed about with previously and that sink drain had non domestic suff being sent down it
You did well on them jobs Tom, The thing is the fact you sorted them both could and most times leads to more work. I am a keen runner and have been for years, it's stops you thinking about the job all the time and clears you head a bit, great content as always Mate.
Nice one Tom, enjoy the running, the hardest part is fitting it in when you've been grafting hard all day and aching. With the summer, try getting it dusted early doors.
Thanks for the support mate, I'm full of enthusiasm at the minute but it might drop off, once I get into something I don't tend to give up easily though
now clocks have changed and weather is improving it definitely makes a difference to ur mood. That choke reminded of a false teeth factory i used to go to, they make molds out of plaster of paris and even with a catchpot on the waste the pipes would block up every 3 or 4 months. Not much else u could do with that tray, it will prob last a few years like that, in the perfect world it would come out but at least its up and working for them. Good to know ur got work in the pipeline, seems lots of people are saying its quiet out there
Things have dropped a bit work wise, I've been pricing plenty but not winning as much as usual, it normally means people have lowered their prices a touch, Thanks for the support as always mate, it is greatly appreciated
Well done, Tom. I've just come from a blocked kitchen sink drain! Couldn't get past 3 x knuckle bends to clear the pipe (buried behind kitchen units). Probably muopet builders' work. Had to recommend a drain specialist. Can't charge for not fixing it - win some, lose some.
Great video Tom. Well done sorting that little out - that sink drain! Good luck with the exercise - it’s great to be out in the countryside now that the evenings are light- apart from the rain, of course! (The fields around here (Northumberland) are still pretty saturated.)
Thanks for the support as always Steve, all it seems to do is rain here as well, things are still pretty wet but we will have hose pipe bans in the summer
The blockage - I regularly use a wet vac - that you had o be the waste with a 32-40mm waste coupler, suck and blow until there’s some shift - if not, re - pipe 😂
It was amazing to see it was dry under the shower tray. What a tough place to work. Seems like it would have been easier to cut a hole in that back wall so you could reach the rear jack. Also after leveling I would have put a screw in the jack to the 2x3 piece of wood under it. I assume it moved from vibration so just one screw would prevent the wood from moving under the jack.
The rear wall might have been an outside, I can't honestly remember though, I think vibration over the years caused it, like you say just one screw would have stopped it, Thanks for the support as always mate, it is greatly appreciated
Old saying Tom Where there's muck there's money 😆 You certainly accept the challenge Ok ,You do a Great job I enjoy your vids and running commentary Keep up the good work
Great content as usual. That shower tray, wow! They could have built a step to get in!! Have you considered getting some airbags Tom? Cheap as chips but can get you out of a muddle. The second job I’d have done exactly the same. As you said, you’re often working within the constraints of budgets and can only do your best. Been watching your channel for a while now and like the transparency. You need to stop giving yourself a hard time on camera mate👍🏻
Thanks for the support as always mate, I've seen a few guys using them air bags, I always wondered how long they last before popping, they would come in handy though on some jobs
I'm in my second (and last) year of studying to be a HVAC-technician in Belgium at the moment. I want to thank you for taking us along and showing us what the job is all about.
Hi Tom, good on the jobs, patching up is always harder than full replacements, i would have most probably done the same on what the customer wants, healthy diet and exercise benefits but not that easy in the plumbers world, you will know when the time as come to retire when you get down under that sink and can't get back up🤣, from what i have seen here you will always have work coming in.
Great job Tom, for the tray if you have a irwin or bahco quick clamp then you can always reverse the jaws by pulling the pin out and turning the jaw faces over, you can then use it to push up and hold.
On the first job I 100% agree that this is normal on new builds over the last 30 years. Odd job men doing every task on site to just get the home ready for the tenants to move in. Seen it 100s if not thousands of times. If you can do it yourself you are often better off doing it yourself. Your fix was perfect using what budget you had. If they had £1500 you could have installed a complete new shower - and once you get the old tiles off the price could go up [I didn't see what type of shower it was so price is just a blind estimate and I assume it could be re-used but we all know what 20 year old plumbing is like when fiddled with]
Tom you are a star you cope well with all you have on your plate and you the running may help destress you on that front. Good save on the badly installed - shower tray - I think I might have cleaned out the old silicone before jacking the tray up😉 That drain and sink waste 🤮judging by the state of the sink - was it a workshop? Keep diong your best - that’s all you can do 😀👍
Hiya Tom. Oh that drain, what do these people do huh. I've used a deflated ball before now to lift these trays back up. Push them in the blow up. Only a thought. Thanks Tom. Sorry to hear you've been struggling mate. Glad you're feeling better.
Hi Tom, a couple of challenging jobs for you in this film, the shower tray was a good temporary fix, you did what you could there. It never fails to amaze me what people will put down their sink and basin waste pipes, what do they think happens to it when it disappears down the plug hole ??? 🤦♂️. Then as soon as a blockage occurs they can’t understand how it’s happened, I’ve been in the job for years and I still can’t understand how people think. But I’ve made a good living from them I suppose, have a good week Tom and take care. 👍👍👍 PS, good luck with the running Tom and well done mate.
Thanks for the support as always Chris, once it's gone down the drain people think it's gone, they never think the pipes might get blocked. Like you say we make a good living sorting it
You did a great job on that shower tray Tom, well done, shame it wasn't put in right in the first place, and as for the waste pipe blockage beyond the call of duty, must have been saving that one up for you to finally sort out😂
Hi Tom, That shower was interesting one, I'm surprised the the owners didn't get vertigo stepping into that lol. You mentioned a car jack, well funnily enough that's what I use for those jobs. I think the only thing I would have done different is squeezed some silicone into the gap before raising the tray. Either way cracking result , it's allways good if we can rescue a situation and save the customer some money. Re your business, you are unique Tom, you can and do turn your hand to almost anything and you have a lovely approachable way about you that comes across so well on film. Unfortunately my business has dropped off massively which has been quite upsetting to be honest. So much so I have had to take a job with a national facility's maintenance company. A bitter pill to Swallow after 15 years but it is what it is. I believe you are pretty local to me is it a possibility I could have chat with you on a one to or pm basis, there are a few things I would like to ask you. All that said you have an avid watcher, your channel is out and out the best no nonsense content on youtube, not polished or fettled for the camera the best and the worst of everyday plumbing situations usually dealt with with a happy disposition and no ego trips on display . Keep it up Tom 😊
Thanks for the support mate, I'm so sorry to hear that your business dropped off, things are tough out there at the minute and I'm having to fight harder and wok harder to bring the work in. Feel free to drop me a message, my email is in the my youtube bio, I'm sometimes a bit slow responding to emails but I'm more than happy to have a chat
10/10 for getting those horrible jobs sorted. Maybe a note to carry a small car jack in the van if space allows. Doing the work and keeping the other guys working as well, life is never easy but you are really good at what you do. Please keep the videos coming.
I did think about getting the jack out the van, it probably would have worked a treat, thanks for the support as always mate, it is greatly appreciated 👍
Thanks for the support as always Pb, hopefully the shower will be Ok for a bit, ideally it needs ripping out, the running is going Ok, I'm just building up
Great video tom your a legend. Well done with the exercise. Dont think youll never have any work especially if your customers watch your TH-cam. Theyll see the struggle.👍👍.
Nearly 69 , knees worn out so unable to run but still able to do 3 sessions a week Boxercise and hold me own with all the youngsters uns. Practiced martial arts since I was 16-1/2 and still trying. It’s a hard game in piping construction but it’s enjoyable at times and interesting problem solving. Enjoy your running buddy. Regards, Dave
Thanks for the support as always Dave, I thought to myself I really do need to get a bit fitter, I used to cycle 100 plus miles a week and then work took over, hopefully it should do me a bit of good
I worry about not enough work. Work has completely dropped off. And with my mortage payment doubling it does get worrying... I like to keep going or I also loose motivation...
From another plumber called Tom who also runs it's good for you. I took it up after the pandemic to lose wight. Started with couch to 5km. And i do 5k. 3 times a week now. Good for your mental health😊 Must be a thing with us lot. Did the best you could with that shower tray.
@@PlumbLikeTom definitely start with the couch to 5k program. It's a free app that you can download and will track everything for you. I also started with the couch to 5k last year and been running a couple of 5ks a week ever since. Good way to clear the mind, get some fresh air and take in some scenery!
Tom, your right sometimes it’s reality , and you are always up against it, customers that think jobs take 5 minutes, but we know not, hope you enjoy the 🏃♀️ it’s a great way to exercise and clear your head, take care 🚽
I always try and deal with problems like that sink waste on the spot. Then I can bill the customer for the work and they’re happy. If you give up and rebook it for another time it never seems cost effective.
I agree with you mate, the problem I find also is making time to go back, if I can fix things when I'm there I always will, it also saves the client money, thanks for the support as always Martin
I feel for you mate. I had exactly the same, 760 wide tray in a 730 hole. The chipboard floor and the plasterboard all rotten. Customer asks, can you repair it on the cheap 😂 The lazy builders put in the tray and plasterboard up to it, so nothing either side of the tray itself apart from the galv studs and they were rusted to shit. CT1 the timber and legs in place and put a big bead of silicone in before winding up the feet??
That's about the standard on most jobs, I did advise my customer on this job that ideally it should be took out and put right, hopefully my repair lasts a while, thanks for the support 👍
So you applied fresh sealant above the existing one whithout taking it off completely? Do you know for a fact it will work and last? I always follow your channel so I'm interested in having your opinion because it is very annoying taking old sealnt off completely and very time consuming!
It does put you under pressure but I don't like letting people down, I just wish they say when they book you in, Thanks for the support as always Keith, it is greatly appreciated
It's amazing to think that a qualified plumber thought that the shower tray was fitted correctly. I agree with you the best fix is to strip it out and start again. Sadly the customer end up paying a fair bit to fix it. As for the running, do you wear your hat😅😅
Thanks for the support as always mate, the shower tray and walls do really need to come out, I do wear my hat at the minute, it might be different in the summer though
like mikey pipes says "hacks bring you stacks". if your confident in your skills, start your own business. do better and faster work than the other guys and you cand charge more. in the trades, at least in my area, you usually get what you pay for. do top tier work, charge top tier prices. good tradesmen are hard to find and word travels fast when clients are happy.
Thanks for the support Ted, I stay busy all the time, I try to do my best on every job. Like you say word travels fast, I don't really advertise but keep busy
That shower tray is standard new build cr@p . I bet you never hear from that customer now you have siliconed it up . What paint were they putting down that sink ? Gloss 😂
Well done Tom, considering the shower fitting plumber this has got to be a add in The cubicle is not the right size for the shower tray where was he connecting the waste pipe to the kitchen sink?😂 your temp repairing will probably be lasting just as long , and I think you will always have work Tom and money tight for a lot of people, and keeping fit is good for anyone who can, and your work is top class 👍👍👍👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
I can tell you what I wouldn't do with the job under the sink. I wouldn't put my mouth on the pipe and blow on it. You can use your shop vac and put the pipe in the exhaust end and use that if needed. Why not run a snake down the rest of the pipe to Make sure it's clear? Replacing the pipe was a good move.
Not bad, but it will be better to first tighten the nuts from the side of the shower tray and only then unscrew the legs since you unscrewed the thread of the stud from the tray and now they are held on by a couple of turns....
@@PlumbLikeTom I understand it. We have a cup of tea, cookies and a good viewing angle when you have mold, spiders and look at the spot while you are lying on the floor...😅
Another nonsense video great content, good look with the running, make sure you've got good running shoes, they're essential. You always feel better after a run.
i must say the moment i saw you blow into that waste pipe, i knew you were a dedicated man lol
Thanks for the support mate
I don’t think you need to worry about the work coming in, the standard of work is exemplary you’ll always have plenty of work Tom.

Great video as always, I would like to ask you about the pricing, how much to charge for the Shower Tray fix pls ?
I can't remember exactly now but I think it was around 85 plus vat for this job, it took around an hour plus the materials
@@PlumbLikeTom £ 85 ? Thats so cheap 😟
I would not worry about about work coming in Tom ,your standard of work is superb, great content as usual keep it coming mate👍🏼
Thanks for the support as always mate
I feel for you mate.
I had exactly the same, 760 wide tray in a 730 hole.
The chipboard floor and the plasterboard all rotten.
Customer asks, can you repair it on the cheap 😂
The lazy builders put in the tray and plasterboard up to it, so nothing either side of the tray itself apart from the galv studs and they were rusted to shit.
CT1 the timber and legs in place and put a big bead of silicone in before winding up the feet??
That's about the standard on most jobs, I did advise my customer on this job that ideally it should be took out and put right, hopefully my repair lasts a while, thanks for the support 👍
the phrase "you can't polish a turd" came to mind on that shower tray
Indeed, thanks for watching as always mate 👍
The wonderful things we see poured down sinks 😂
Tell me about it Colin, it could have been worse and been a urinal though
I would have fitted a brand new pipe waste and trap for the kitchen sink
Hey mate! Hope you get this one hah! Good vid mate! Hope it will be a good one for you. Good video mate
Thanks for the support as always Brad, I can see this one, I'm not sure why your other comments haven't shown up
@@PlumbLikeTom not sure mate!! Glad you saw this one! Speak to you at the end of the week bud! Have a good one!
Make sure you wash ya hands before snap time Tom ❤
Tom, I would have done exactly what you did. Stop worrying about replying to us. We’re happy just watching. 👍👍👍👍
Thanks for the support as always mate, it is greatly appreciated
Car jack I’ve done it
So you applied fresh sealant above the existing one whithout taking it off completely? Do you know for a fact it will work and last? I always follow your channel so I'm interested in having your opinion because it is very annoying taking old sealnt off completely and very time consuming!
You do really need to remove all the old silicone to be honest, I did my best to get as much off as possible, thanks for watching
I would have booked the sink job in, no way can you have a look while your here sorry too busy
That shower was bodged no doubt, but if it has held up like that for 20 years it might hold up another 20 😅
Hopefully it will mate, thanks for watching as always 👍
like mikey pipes says "hacks bring you stacks". if your confident in your skills, start your own business. do better and faster work than the other guys and you cand charge more. in the trades, at least in my area, you usually get what you pay for. do top tier work, charge top tier prices. good tradesmen are hard to find and word travels fast when clients are happy.
Thanks for the support Ted, I stay busy all the time, I try to do my best on every job. Like you say word travels fast, I don't really advertise but keep busy
I'm 65 now Tom i try and walk 10 miles everyday
That’s the trouble new builds today are even worse mate
The standards are getting worse across the board, all about money
That shower tray is standard new build cr@p . I bet you never hear from that customer now you have siliconed it up . What paint were they putting down that sink ? Gloss 😂
Thanks for the support as always mate, I probably won't hear back to be honest, hopefully it gets them by for a while anyway
If it’s not the tilers blocking the waste pipes, it’s the painters!
The good news is, it keeps you in work…
There's always someone, like you say it keeps us busy, thanks for watching 👍
just getting out is good for you, clear the flux and solder out of you lungs LOL👍
It certainly does help, I will hopefully lose a bit of weight as well, thanks for the support as always mate
Thanks for the support as always mate, hopefully my fix will last long enough for the customer to budget for it to be sorted properly 👍
Follow in crapranis boots and take on apprentices pass on your knowledge and skills to the young generation tom 👍👍👍👌
It's a big commitment, it's finding the work at the end of it all that's the hard part, thanks for watching as always Paul
Not bad, but it will be better to first tighten the nuts from the side of the shower tray and only then unscrew the legs since you unscrewed the thread of the stud from the tray and now they are held on by a couple of turns....
I did notice that when I watched it back, it seemed solid enough so I'm hoping it should be Ok for a while, thanks for watching 👍
@@PlumbLikeTom I understand it. We have a cup of tea, cookies and a good viewing angle when you have mold, spiders and look at the spot while you are lying on the floor...😅
Tile grout ??
Washing out paint trays and tile adhesive/grout in sink…..
It looked like it, thanks for watching as always mate 👍
Like you say bud you can only do what you can mate if customers don't want to pay too much there's only so much you can do.
That's it Mark, ideally this will all need to come out but at least now it's usable again, thanks for the support as always 👍
5 tubes of silicone
Not quite 5, thanks for watching mate
Nice job sucking the paint out the pipe with you mouth. Great commitment to the job.
Thanks for the support mate
Extreme Plumbing. Blowing down that pipe is a bit far. Fare play Tom.
Thanks for the support as always mate 👍
Arrrr sticking mouth round waste pipe , are your innards made of cast iron ?
I'm built different, thanks for watching
Next time Tom, get your scissor Jack out of the van!
I should have done that, thanks for the support 👍
Get some lifting air bags
Another nonsense video great content, good look with the running, make sure you've got good running shoes, they're essential. You always feel better after a run.
Thanks for the support mate, I do need to get some proper shoes, I just have trainers at the minute
