- Must try street food in Sri Lanka. Today we tried our first kottu roti and isso vada, two incredibly popular Sri Lankan street foods in Colombo.

We started off our massive Sri Lankan street food tour tasting the locally made curd, mee kiri. Super tasty, full of delicious rich flavour, this was a great start to the Sri Lankan street food in Colombo.
We continued trying the best street food in Sri Lanka tasting hot butter cuttlefish and ice milo. These are some of the most popular foods you must try in Sri Lanka!
We finished off our Sri Lanka food tour heading to Galle Face Green in the evening. This is a busy spot for street food in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and we came to try kottu roti and isso vada. Kottu roti and isso vada are very popular street foods to eat in Colombo especially, and we were blown away by their flavour and taste, truly delicious. Any trip to Colombo isn't complete without visiting Galle Face Green and trying the iconic kottu roti and isso vade!

4:30 Kokis: deep-fried rosette cookies made of rice flour and coconut milk. Originally brought by the Dutch i think?
4:53 Kevum: oil cakes made from kithul treacle and rice flour. The one you tried, "konda kevum" is so-named because it looks like a hair bun x)
5:13 Thala guli: balls/rolls of sesame seeds and jaggery
5:45 Halapa: sweetened kurakkan/finger millet with coconut, steamed flat in a kenda leaf

For those who are living abroad, the closest thing to Curd and Treacle is Greek Yogurt and Maple Syrup

I LOVE kottu roti since the first time I had it in Maldives (where they call it kottu roshi)! Unfortunately we don’t have any Sri Lankan restaurants in my neck of the woods, so I have to look for Indian restaurants that actually have them on the offer. Enjoy the rest of your trip there! That curd with treacle reminds me of taho (bean curd with caramelized brown sugar and tiny bobba). I can also imagine why it is eaten for breakfast. The other items in the shop looks just as tasty.
I love that look Steph gave Chris when he said that his Milo drink tastes better than hers. Hahaha! 😂 Those look like they have a milk foam on top. The sprinkling of milo powder on top seems like a great idea too. I'll be making one very cold one for myself one of these days.
I got a bit worried for Steph as she bit into the crab. But I guess, judging from the video, the crab shell got crispy from frying and is easier to eat than I though.
The last street food reminds me of okoy, a traditional PH dish often made with flour batter, julienned veg, bean sprouts, and shrimps. I do not see as many being made as street food though compared to way back when I was a kid.

Haha, the Ice Milo was refreshing and tasty, and we're sure they tasted the same 😜
The crab definitely got crispier once it was deep fried and easier to eat, but not as soft shelled as others we've had before.
We never tried okoy when we were in the Philippines actually, but it looks really tasty and similar to what we had. We'll definitely have to put it on the list for our next visit 😉 Thanks again Cris, all the best to you and see you next meal!

Hi ... When name board says Hotel de Pilawoos ... it's not a Hotel. Its a restaurant. For some reason for a very very long years people used to call restaurants as hotel. Probably to match sinhala meaning (local main language)
They used to call them hotel because the best restaurants back in the British colonial times were inside hotels, so the name 'hotel' for restaurant just kind of stuck! So to this day restaurants are still called hotels ;) Thanks a lot for watching!
Wel come to Sri Lanka. The UFO's shape sweets called "kawun", round wheel sweet called "kokish".last one you ate is called "halpa".you must visit galle, Kandy, Ella, nuwaraeliya. It will be memorable ❤️

Just be careful when ur trying the Isso vade, always check the vendor & make sure to ask whether its fresh or not, some of them have poor hygiene & use low quality ingredients, even the oil they use they get it from 5star hotels since they don't use that oil more than once. Just be careful
