- Today I unfortunately got scammed by a shoe cleaner in Colombo with @GoWithAli , after asking 6 times what the price would be he kept changing the subject and then demanded an outrageous price after cleaning and painting my shoes black (which ruined them). I ended up having to give the shoes away because they looked so bad. The moral of the story is to negotiate the price before starting and also to reward honest behaviour in life.

This is absolutely ridiculous. You did your best to ask for the price before getting the job done, it’s not your fault Harry. The man had other plans from the start. I’m sorry that you had to face such a bad incident in our beautiful country. This video will help the locals as well to avoid such scammers in our country.

I’m Srilankan living in UK and I’m embarrassed by this man, if he did that to my shoes I’ll make sure that’s the last shoe he ever touch. I am in Canada but as a S.Lankan I got upset too especially to a nice guy like you. There are some tourists who try their best to get something at the lowest price as possible, and get upset with the vendors and unlike you guys they don't even give anything extra after.

In Sri Lanka, price of a pair of shoes will be around RS 3000. There are some people trying to scam foreigners. Even some times they scam Sri Lankan people too. If you are buying some thing or hiring taxi, first thing you have to do is ask for price. If he doesn’t say, better thing is to leave him. Since you are a full time traveller, getting caught on those scammers is very low compared to other foreigners. But, some foreigners get caught on those scammers. There are alot of genuine sellers. But this is definitely disgusting.

But now the shoe repair person got just a far lesser amount. Harry got more reach by mentioning "scam" on caption and more views in the long run. Harry will earn far more because of this and the loss is to the shoe repair person.😂😂

extremely sorry about the situation sometimes when we are looking to get things done cheaply cheap things happen to us at times like this but most of the times bargaining and getting things done cheaply works so we must keep in our head that things won't work out always...Anyways your a kindhearted man keep it up!

This way of hiding the price until the work is done is a common practice in Sri Lanka. They should change it if tourism is important for the country.
This happens everywhere, Harry. Never got into a transaction with someone who will not give a price. This is true more than ever now .

Him not giving you a price was a massive red flag. Never agree to anything without confirming the price first, that goes for everything, in any country.
I guess you trusted him easily because, like you said, you've had only good experiences with Sri Lankans prior to that. Tbh, I would've got away from him as soon as he touched your shoes without your permission - that was another red flag for me.
The part about him having 35 years of experience cleaning shoes is probably fake because he clearly didn't clean your shoes properly.

This is unfortunately widespread in Sri Lanka.
Tuk-tuk riding can also be annoying. Even when you agree on a price, you may find yourself in an unpleasant situation. Higher prices for tourists is a standard. A smile on people's faces means trouble very often. The solicitation attempts take place on the train, beach, shops, tuk-tuk, name it yourself. It's a pity it looks like that. Non-trade people are very nice and friendly.
Watch out for the scams.
There is poverty every where but honesty is the best policy.

1. It was totally clear at the first glance that if somebody is not agreeing to tell the price beforehand, that alone is a sign right off the bat that you were going to get hit with a hefty fee. You should've just walked away if he refused to give the price upfront
2. Past performance does not indicate the future, especially when it comes to getting scammed. Just because you found honest ppl for 2 weeks, it does not mean that you were not going to get scammed
3. That shoes looked as old as it could get. Should've just bought a new pair from a store where they clearly display the prices in bold font.
