Thank you for revisiting this car.😊 The ID.4 has held my interest for 3 years. I have a AWD PRO S with heat pump arriving within a few weeks. I am confident, from various sources, that the software is virtually glitch free now. It seems as if ID.4 are selling well, in Nova Scotia. The first two Electrify Canada chartering centres are all but complete. Things are looking up.
The 2024 VW ID 4 is great upgrade to the original ID 4, especially the software, range, drive train, charging rate etc, Very nice upgrade to a great car!
Right, they could have made the nose longer, made it trickier to park and have a longer turning radius... so you can get what a lunchbag in the frunk? then if the frunk is an official storage area what, you add weight with plastic to isolate the mechanical components to make it safer to regularly open and close, and that then adds weight, them more weight with hydrolics to auto open it and auto hold it up? no thanks. I see what they were doing and it makes sense.
We have the 2023 VW ID.4 Pro S in the US and love it. Yes, the two button rear window things is just annoying to put it mildly. I have taken several road trips at this point and welcome two things: one, more regular software update and sooner access to Tesla Super Chargers. That's it. I still love ❤ the daily driving experience everyday day. God bless,
I have had my 2021 AWD Pro for 2.5 years and love it. I drive 30K Km per year and it has been awesome in gas savings. I used to drive an Audi S3 and drove quite aggressively , I find this vehicle so relaxing that my driving habits have changed a lot and a lot less stress while driving during the day. My lease is up in just over a year so hopefully I can afford the $10-12K jump in pricing for the 2024's.
@@samjam6989 Not much maintenance period actually. All Season tires that came with the car are on their last legs though. 80K Km on the car and probably 65K on the Bridgestone stock tires.
Andrea & Zack ... great that you mentioned the charging stats; 175KWs is average speed for most EVs now. 10-80% in 28 minutes is a touch underwhelming; this is why charge curves are important. If you don't know what a charge curve is, it shows how long the 175KW rate will be maintained before the rate drops. Kind of important to mention what kind of charge port is used; NACS or the original CCS system. NACS will allow you to use the Tesla Charging Network. I found Electrify Canada to be reliable as opposed to Electrify America (could be due to less charging stations in Canada though). I would consider the Ioniq 5 EV over the EV6 since the EV6 isn't really a SUV.
Charging shouldnt be an issue from 2025 onwards as all cars including VW will be able to charge using Tesla superchargers and existing ID4 drivers will also be able to charge with an adaptor given from VW. So you will just plug and charge similar to Rivian and Ford which are using it now
If you are thinking about the 62 kWh battery ID.4 Standard or S trim, and worried about range, don't. I have a 2023 S RWD with the leatherette power adjustable, massaging seats, panoramic roof with oower sunshade, etc snd its been an amazing EV at a lower price point. But i still get all the options of the Pro S trim except for AWD which I dont feel I need living in Northeast Kansas. I love my 23 ID.4 S RWD abd road trip it all the time. Ive never had ti worry about the shirtter range either, so if you are looking to save sone money, the 62 kWh battery S trim RWD could be a great option for you without sacrificing options.
Range is not an issue for daily driving, which typically uses only about 5 to 15% of battery capacity for most of us. I got the 82 kWh battery to provide more options on road trips and to be able to easily handle some degradation over the long run. However, it makes a lot of sense to opt for the smaller battery. Another bonus is a bit of weight reduction with the smaller pack.
I have this car, in this model year and trim, and it's a great drive. The tight turning radius comes in handy more than you'd think. Even smaller turning radius than the Ioniq 5. I don't really have issues with the piano black, either, but I don't have kids with greasy fingers 😅 The steering capacitive buttons are responsive and I never accidentally hit the "Rear" capacitive button for the windows, but I could see this happening if you have different proportions.

Looks like a solid update to original ID4. Will the original be able to upgrade to the new improved software? I remember the reviews from original that made software clunkiness a deal breaker for me. I also remember the sluggish performance didn’t help either.
The AWD Pro S is 64k before taxes with the interior that looks like it belongs on a 35-40k dollar car. Sooooooo CHEAP. No lease deals either. I still think this is DOA but at least they fixed the horrible software. This makes the previous version untouchable and the depreciation will be huge now.
This is definitely not ‘people’s’ car. But too dear for my pocket. At least I get to contribute through my taxes to those who can afford it. Strange times we live in. I thought I escaped socialism when I moved to Canada.
The feel is much different than the looks, it has comfort features like seat massaging, and a lot of the money also went into the tech (the Travel Assist is great to use on long trips, the safety tech is very good, etc). A more economical option is the Equinox EV. I didn't get a chance to test drive it but it has a lower price point in the US.
The improvements are all good, and I don't mind the window switches. The ID.4 seems a bit bulbous on the outside, but not too bad. I drove last year's ID.4 along with the Hyundai IONIQ 5 and both seem...adequate. I had trouble seeing the instruments through the Hyundai's steering wheel, but every car has quirks. I wish the ID.4 came with smaller wheels. All these compact SUV EVs seem decent but not stellar. Compromises in every one.
I like it better than most EV's as far as looks go. Unlikely I'll ever own one as there is no dealer in my area. And I'm 70 and don't think I want to deal with long charging sessions when I'm on a road trip.
It's a good affordable EV with pretty good range and charging speed. It still has aome cheap bits like with the 2 window switches, but otherwise largely vice free. That said the new Equinox EV and now discounted Mach-E makes a compelling competition.
Why is everyone obsessed with the window switches? I've had my od4 two months and have only ever lowered the drivers window twice, and never needed to lower the rear windows. 🤷♂️
Too bad that North Americans are so starved for EV options compared to where I live (China). The ID4 is really not interesting. It has an old tech ternary battery and has trouble selling here, also because of the low tech interior which is perceived as basic (that's the Chinese opinion). VW are discounting id4 USD 8500 across the board in China, which brings the basic trim to less than $20,000. The higher versions get close to Tesla MY pricing and the latter runs circles around the ID4 in my opinion. Top version VW with 313HP is USD 33,300. And for USD 26.000, you can get the performance version of Geely E8 (look it up, Geely is Polestar, Volvo, Zeeker, Lotus and some more) with an LFP battery (Longer life both in charge cycles and battery degradation, less subject to igniting), 600+ HP AWD, a very refined interior and a nice ride with lifetime warranty. It's good that the traditional manufacturers are entering the EV game, but they still have some way to go. VW bought a stake in Xpeng, who actually make quite nice cars, and VW will use their drive trains and software to hopefully produce something more up to date. Currently the ID4 feels like the cheap Uber EVs that we have in China. Nice video nonetheless !
I really want to like this, but I just can't bring myself. On the one hand I very much appreciate that it's a more conventional design that will age well, and the upgrades make it more enticing, but on the other hand, the capacitive steering controls and convoluted infotainment still make it a tough buy, especially when VW has pretty much admitted that they need to step back. If they had just kept the control scheme from the Golf MK 7.5 days, but updated with modern features, life would have been good. The problem with EV's and modern cars is that I don't want to feel like I'm getting what the kids call the ens***ification era of tech and consumer devices... I don't want to have a worse experience with touch controls and capacitive steering controls that area easy to trigger when it's worse than the experience I have now in a car with physical controls. VW could have really made their current cars if they hadn't decided to join the auto industry claw-back of ergonomic controls... like, who was the person who greenlit the toggle switch to operate front and back windows in the ID.4? Sometimes when you get to that level of skimping it's really telling of the mindset of the company.
The capacitive steering buttons are actually very responsive, and in this model I found the climate buttons being always available in the screen not much different than having them hanging below it. But to each their own 🤷🏾♀️ The current CEO said they would rethink the capacitive buttons, but they are embedded into the supply chain of VW _and other automakers_ so there might be some delay there. I don't know if this will make the EV more expensive, as well.
@@Zlojeb990 the issue is not whether resistive heat can keep you warm. Properly designed, it can. The issue is that without a heat pump, in cold weather, an EV loses less range when equipped with a heat pump.
Ev market share and sales have been rising every year for the past decade, so obviously EVs are selling. You’re not alone though, a lot of people conflate the declining growth rate in sales with total number of sales.
As a $60K vehicle, it seems really unimpressive all around, with nothing to make it a compelling purchase, UNLESS you insist on buying an EV and also insist that it's a VW.
I wanted to trade in my 23 kia sportage for the id4. I just test drive the id4 Pro S AWD but it only had a 209 range and they wanted mid $46k after the 7500 rebate and to me I didn't think it was worth it for such a small range
You must have driven a previous model year because I have the 2024 version of that model, and my real world city driving range for this car is over 300 miles with a full battery. I hardly ever need to charge it to more than 70%

It's NOT the "Same", Zack! When you go downhill in an electric vehicle, you get some electrons back, IF you are in regenerating mode. You DO NOT get any gas back when you go downhill in a gas powered vehicle!
True generally. Some regeneration occurs if you’re using the brake pedal or cruise control to hold your downhill speed constant. If you’re freewheeling, just letting the car drift, there’s no significant regeneration.
@@billurban1581Regeneration occurs when you take your foot off the accelerator pedal, if you are pressing the brake pedal you’re not going to get any regeneration.

100 years ago, when the Milwaukee Road was traversing the Rockies in Montana and Idaho with electric locomotives, 40 to 60% of the ascending power was regenerated back to the grid on the downside. You could look it up.
Out of sheer curiosity could you make it from Vancouver to Kamloops on 2 charges?

2025 Maverick vehicle of the year ❤🎉
how. do you compare your head unit of your GTi with with one in the ID4 2024?
This is better, it's faster.
Can't figure out why this isn't front wheel drive, especially when there's no fronk?
It is generally agreed that a real wheel drive automobile handles better.
Model Y not part of the 4 other cars to consider, did I miss something?!
Unfortunately though I enjoy the content on this channel I don’t think Zack and Andrea are the biggest Tesla fans. Definitely odd that Model Y is missing
I own 2024 ID4, you can't compare with model Y. I've driven every other EV in Canada. ID4 is the best for your money.
@@fbal1977Not saying model Y is better than ID4, just saying shouldn’t it get mention as next alternative? Just like people reviewing phones, they would benchmark Samsung or Apple
This car is an actual compact SUV: sits higher off the ground, has a higher ride height. The Model Y is not an SUV in any sane universe
Honestly, I just forgot, we never drive Tesla's because the brand is not interested in us driving them. Tesla's in Vancouver are a dime a dozen, it was just an honest mistake. We tend to recommend what we've driven.
The id4 has a stop sale. Is this is in Canada as well?
Looks like a solid update to original ID4. Will the original be able to upgrade to the new improved software? I remember the reviews from original that made software clunkiness a deal breaker for me. I also remember the sluggish performance didn’t help either.
does US has free DC charging at Electrify America?
The 2024 model has free 500kwh worth of charging
The AWD Pro S is 64k before taxes with the interior that looks like it belongs on a 35-40k dollar car. Sooooooo CHEAP.
No lease deals either. I still think this is DOA but at least they fixed the horrible software.
This makes the previous version untouchable and the depreciation will be huge now.
Remember when 40k was expensive for a car
@@saranrathakrish8468 sadly I do. And when you figure the lease payments on this it’s pushing 900s before taxes on a 4 yr zero down. It’s stupid.
This is definitely not ‘people’s’ car. But too dear for my pocket. At least I get to contribute through my taxes to those who can afford it. Strange times we live in. I thought I escaped socialism when I moved to Canada.
@@jcizmanFacts and Truth behind your comment. Another method for the distribution of wealth.
Resistive heat for the cabin? No heat pump?
It's an option
RE: interior seat material. Does “leatherette” mean “fake leather”?
It's a good affordable EV with pretty good range and charging speed. It still has aome cheap bits like with the 2 window switches, but otherwise largely vice free.
That said the new Equinox EV and now discounted Mach-E makes a compelling competition.
How do you feel about drum brakes on the rear wheels
With regen braking they hardly ever get used. The drums form a good sealed compartment so that the original brakes will last the life of the car.
@@pietwandelaar1743 I had an early Prius with disc front, drums rear, sold it at 146,000 miles, the original brakes had 50% remaining.
Why is everyone obsessed with the window switches? I've had my od4 two months and have only ever lowered the drivers window twice, and never needed to lower the rear windows. 🤷♂️
How is the Tesla Model Y not a competitor?
Good review, why don’t they send their cheaper EVS to North America? Do they think here people are Rich?
If you want better everything check out chevrolet equinox ev! More range more HP more room better nav etc etc etc.
Allegedly VW is reconsidering using buttons again, but I would not assume they will bring them back soon.
The capacitive steering buttons are actually very responsive, and in this model I found the climate buttons being always available in the screen not much different than having them hanging below it. But to each their own 🤷🏾♀️
The current CEO said they would rethink the capacitive buttons, but they are embedded into the supply chain of VW _and other automakers_ so there might be some delay there. I don't know if this will make the EV more expensive, as well.
It’s a good thing it never gets cold anywhere in the US. Otherwise, that no heat pump thing would be really stupid 🙄
I've got the model with no heat pump, live in Canada, last winter was around -25 C lowest temp and it was totally fine.
This car is fine in the cold. Not many of us in the US live in the artic
@@Zlojeb990 the issue is not whether resistive heat can keep you warm. Properly designed, it can. The issue is that without a heat pump, in cold weather, an EV loses less range when equipped with a heat pump.
@@Andre-cj3ec VW discontinued the heat pump since the model was not efficient. They said there were almost no efficiency gains over resistive heating
Need 2 more buttons for rear window and separate rear child lock
I've never been bothered by the 2 window switches. If I need the rear windows lowered the people in the back can take care of that.
Not if you have a 5 years old😂, “child lock” disable all rear doors and windows
Let me guess, select drive mode S.
always matching the car A.....
nice but too rich for me
60K for AWD. No sell for most of us Canadian's. You can easily see why EV's are not selling.
Exactly. We can afford it, but it's just too much for a non luxury vehicle! We are waiting to see if prices come down in the coming year.
Ev market share and sales have been rising every year for the past decade, so obviously EVs are selling. You’re not alone though, a lot of people conflate the declining growth rate in sales with total number of sales.
Do not want the glass roof, more weight than metal.
And still I want buttons .... I have a Golf Alltrack wish for more of that.
Guys I love your reviews. But why Tesla Y is not on your list? Tesla is way above all EVs within 50-55K budget
Because buying a TeZla = enriching Putin-loving, Trump-supporting Musk.
Tesla starts rattling after a while and there is no fix.
As a $60K vehicle, it seems really unimpressive all around, with nothing to make it a compelling purchase, UNLESS you insist on buying an EV and also insist that it's a VW.
Hmm idk about that, I actually really like it
I wanted to trade in my 23 kia sportage for the id4.
I hardly ever need to charge it to more than 70%
At least you don’t have the horrid separate arm rest they’re so unappealing
so a 260 Mile range probably mean 150 range in real life? as much as this costs, it should have better seats and tech
iD4 owner here. Terrible build quality, electric motor failure at 70k miles, $9800 repair bill. Buyer beware.
This model from my point of view is the worse that VW made… there is only the logo that is VW
The buttons for light are far, température control does not light in the dark, there is no mute button…..
