    The story behind this song is based on the legend of Robert Johnson learning the guitar after making a deal with the devil at a crossroads.

    This is an old recording of him. There is a whole series of these with Colter. He has since grown into his voice and developed quite a bit as a performer. My favorite song of his is “13 silver dollars” but most would direct you to “Kate McCannon”. His songs “Nuthin” and “Me and Big Dave” are also ones that touched me.

    • @davebeach2343
      @davebeach2343 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jjj832 Thanks for the reply. I listen to the Dead South already. Their sound is definitely something that I appreciate. The lyrics are what makes me come back. Typically I'll listen to a song and get drawn in because of the sound and style of the band. The second time around I pay particular attention to the lyrics. I'm partial to story telling songs. I find it particularly impressive when a song writer can tell a story through the relatively few words that a song contains. The combination of a great sound and well written lyrics is what I'm always searching for in music. I've been listening to music for over 50 years now, and I absolutely love talking with other people about what music they love, and giving them suggestions of what I love.
      I will check out the other two artists you reccomend. I would also like to give you some artists that I like, based on your suggestion of the Dead South.
      First, the group's name is Gangstagrass, it's a mixture of bluegrass and rap. In particular I'd recommend two songs, "Nickel and Dime Blues", and "You Can Never Go Home Again". Both songs are personal favorites.
      One more suggestion is an album from 1979 titled "Broken English" by Marianne Faithful. This is rock-n-roll at it's best. She has been around since she was a girlfriend of Mick Jagger. Jagged and Richards wrote their first song together for her, "As Tears Go By". Anyway, if you like rock music you might give it a listen, either the first track "The Ballad of Lucy Jordan" or the last "Why'd Ya Do It".
      Sorry for going on so long, but I lost my wife to covid19 in March, and music was a central part of our lives. She sang in an opera chorus for 16 seasons, directed a church choir for 11 years, and sang with other groups also. We both considered music essential in our lives, great music evokes great emotion. So I find some solace in discussions with other people about music in general. I didn't really participate in any online activities until after she passed away, with the exception of searching TH-cam videos looking for something good. I thank you for your earlier reply, and for taking the time to read and respond to this rambling text if you choose to do so. No worries and GL

    Saw him live a few years ago with my kiddos. They (he preformed with a group at our concert) sent out security after to come get us and brought all of us backstage to meet them, talked with the kids & took photos, signed some merch and even gifted them some merch too. He & all of them that night were beyond kind and amazing! It meant the world to us, Colter Wall and The Dead South *they're from the same area in Canada, who we also met & they even called our kids to lift their spirits when theyve been in the hospital due to Ehlers Danlos Syndrome* are both amazing musicians and amazing people!

    I believe this is folk rock, but it also reminds me of the blues. Funny thing is, people used to call the blues, “Devil’s music”. Because of the mention of the devil in the songs. But, to me, it wasn’t in reverence to, but to warn of, the Devil. A figure as supernatural as the things that go bump in the night. Or any strange cryptic stalking the Smokies or the trees. The song really gives off a supernatural vibe to it. Of folklore and southern gothic.
