    Ok. I play guitar and have for years. Most would screech at his..off tuned guitar. Its tuned perfectly for what he is doing. Very good on a guitar..kick drum and the voice. You can’t accuse him of trying to sound like anyone. He is his own. Absolutely wonderful. As soon as I watch this I watched another one from the same session called Kate McCannon. Wow. Check that one out.

    • @Australian_Prometheus
      @Australian_Prometheus ปีที่แล้ว +15

      The slightly out of tune sound, the djangly tone it provides imo, is part of the vibe or aesthetic that accompanies not just this song but the entire session. Also I'd like to think it was probably a conscious decision made by him in an attempt to almost method act the character in the song. An out of tune guitar unusually producing an unreplicable rendition kinda aligns with the mythos of selling your soul and the devil gifting you unnatural talent.

    • @Garkimyer
      @Garkimyer ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It’s standard tuning but with a capo on the fifth fret, which is kind of designed to be a bit out of tune and sound twangy and slappy since the strings are looser than normal. My point is its most definitely intentional that his guitar is out of tune because it does fit so well with his style and what message he wants the song to convey. I actually learned this song, even though i mainly play electric, because i like it so much.

    • @robwalters8220

      The guitar is very old. That sound is a worn out guitar fret. He makes it part of his music.

    You should react to some newer stuff of his. He's really refined his voice since then. He actually looks back at this and is embarrassed of it since he didnt really know how to sing yet, he was forcing it. I think he was 19 or something here. Cowpoke, Bob Fudge or Cypress Hills and the Big Country would he a good representation of where he is now.

    He's 'throat singing' that mongolians mastered thousands of years ago!
    Bowing his head forward, pitching his vocals downward toward the mic, thus allowing a straight unencumbered path out, direct from the throat. I have to use this technique to hit lower tones and notes!

    HIs newer music is without the deep tone. He was forcing it and couldn't keep doing it without harming his voice. He had to own up to it in 2020. His newer stuff and 'regular' voice isn't bad at all, but it's nowhere as unique as what this sounded like, I think. I still listen to this pretty often, it's just so bluesy and homey, something you don't hear much these days.

    When you are trying to describe the 'muffling', I wonder if the word you're looking for is 'muting', in the same way a trumpet mute, or damping down guitar strings, is done? The tongue is acting like a filter of sorts.
