Supposedly the reason why 12 to 6 elbows are illegal is bc some dork from the athletic commission saw a karate master break cement blocks with the same elbow strike.😂
@@agnosticmanquestionsall2409 it's not that our shoulders shouldn't move like that, it's that they aren't designed to have the pressure put on them thats required to hit hard from 12 to 6. Similar principle with your elbow, if you throw a punch, you put your shoulder behind it so you don't blow out your elbow, same reason dry firing a bow is so bad. All that force is going straight into that joint, nowhere else to go but through.
We learn in boxing that the bulk of the force is generated from the hips and feet. This means you can get the same amount of force with an elbow.. this means you can obtain absolutely horrific power.
Even more with gravity on your side. Look up the old episodes of Fight Science where Randy Couture was demonstrating the push-away elbow ground and pound guys used to favor so much. He would push up, raise his hips or plank out, then tuck in the arm and drop into the elbow, body-weight and muscle. He generated way more force than any of the upright strikers.
you can get more force in an elbow actually. think of your body as a lever with your fist at the end. using your elbows instead of fists shortens the fulcrum, meaning you get the same force in an elbow as you would in a punch while exerting less torque. if you exert that same torque however, you can get that elbow snap, which is way more devastating than any punch or 12 to 6 elbow. its like getting hit with a whip made of bone
Joe is right about biomechanics of the one who hits. But it is all about the damage on the receiving end that counts. The twelve-to-six elbow has a smaller contact area (the pointy part of an elbow) than the elbow hook, which translates to deeper damage, as Pressure=Force/Area. We are talking fractured scull type of damage.
Its not About the Power. Its About the Point of impact. With a 12 to 6 u can literally blind somebody. Every other elbow more ore less Comes from the side with a much bigger point of impact.
Plus, the triceps can cushion a downward elbow or you hit the funny bone nerve. The roundhouse elbow uses the BONES, torque from the waist, chest muscles... Yeah, that inward rotating strike will FINISH!
@@lalli8152 haha you don't know what you are talking about 12 to 6 elbow would absolutely break other guys face ... The momentum it carries is crazy ....
@@hiddendagger7291 No you dont know what you talking about. Just tell me why in UFC 12-6 should be illegal or how you would generate mire force than how joe shows in this video. Yeah it could smash someones face in, but so what?
The hardest elbow is actually the spinning elbow, because you put the whole part of your lower arm in a straight line, and also has much more angular momentum.
The hardest is the one that gives you the allowance (space) to release the biggest force from inside you to land, whether it is the backward or forward throw. So it depends.
Fully agree and it's a very easy movement to learn. If you do boxing and wanna learn self defense, I fully recommend replacing your simple 3 hit combo to end with a elbow so it turns into a habit.
Jo havent seen/took a proper muitai elbow then. Its like a bloody spear. Its the same force as jo's example but delivered at the tip of the elbow. With muithai conditioning you can easily crack any skull break any bone. Its mental
I’ve only trained pure boxing so far, but whenever i try out elbows on a punching bag the power behind them seems huge compared to regular fist punches. There’s always that thunder clap that i find very hard to generate in 10-14oz gloves, despite being a fairly heavy person (around 210lbs)
You can hit harder like this but the dmg zone is much smaller if u hit the other way. Thats the reason why it's very dangerous. Power on minimal hitting zone is very dangerous.
The reason behind the ban of the downward elbow has nothing to do with the torque or fierceness of the punch, it’s because 9 times out of 10 when the down ward elbow is needed, the opponents head is down and the strike would most likely hit the back of his head instead of his face
Just seems like it's a surface area issue. Even if the 12-6 elbow is only, say, 75% as powerful, but I land it with the point of my elbow such that the contact surface is half the size it would otherwise be, that's delivering more damage than the 100% power strike spread across twice the contact surface. While you could still impact on that small a surface area from the side elbow, you're much more likely to minimize the contact surface with a top to bottom strike.
Simple maths, F=ma, in botton knock you have constant mass but a descent acceleration, but when you do the horizontal rotational knock, you increase the acceleration and as a result the force got increased equally.
