Look it, a game me and my friends used to plays as teens was, instead of slaps to the face (which we briefly played) we would punch the other person in the arm, the punching arm, which could affect the power of your punch after a few hits, still hurt like hell and is very entertaining to watch, maybe not as much as slaps to the face but your not risking brain injury
Pretty sure it's AI. Flexible wrists have noting to do with palm strikes and Joe knows that as well as anyone else that has thrown a palm strike. Also, competitive slapping specifically forbids deliberately using the heel of your hand as the striking point. There is no real information given by this short.
The UFC did change the rules because of political back lash. This was well after he was fighting in pancrace. The person who edited the video is the one who messed up.
The UFC only had one event with a rule against closed fists (UFC 9) and that was due to a last-minute change by the commission. Bas Rutten’s UFC fights were closed fist.
Exactly. You can literally see close fisted punches to the face in UFC 1. And unless I'm mistaken, Pancrase rules actually did allow close fisted punches, just not to the head. Saying shoot-wrestling didn't allow punching would be like saying Kyokushin Karate matches don't allow punching.
Palm strikes and elbows are MUCH more effective than punches in the real world. Knuckle on bone at full force is not kind to your hands. Theres a very good reason fighters put wraps and gloves on
Forgot to mention, slaps are just silly. Fronthand makes more noise than damage, backhand is still ruthless but not as effective as a punch and just as much risk for your knuckles
Much smaller mistakes in can lead to way worse injuries with palm strikes. They're also softer and you lose a solid 5cm of reach with them. They're simply more likely to break your wrist, for less damage and less reach. That's why you won't see people use them unless a ruleset forces them to
There is a video of Bas Rutten where he explains he used what he calls 'bone strikes', as in, using the bone of his lower arm to strike his opponent. ☠️
Yeah 100% palm strikes is the way to go bareknuckle in like a street fight or self defense scenario unless you have like boxing training but someone with no training runs a big risk of breakinf their hand throwing wonky punches, my coworker broke his hand like that once
I believe Pancrase (what Bas Rutten competed in for a while) existed before the UFC with the slapping rules. Only thing about Pancrase is they were hybrid pro wrestling and real fighting, so there’s some debate over which fights were works or not
@@grawakendream8980 well the weird thing is it eventually did become a fully real MMA organization that still holds fights today, (just under regular MMA rules) but no one can really agree when that became the case lol

Yeah it was just that mma and "wrastlin" share a common ancestor in shoot fighting, shootfighters would work as circus strong men basically and audience members would pay to challenge them and they'd pay plant another shoot fighter in the crowd to occasionally win to give people hope to keep going. Eventually they kind of realised they could make entertaining fights just by pre planning the results. Then you go to 1990s japan a bunch of pro "wrastlers" had legit wrestling backgrounds and wanted to try their hand at mma cause it was gettinf big in japan so japanese mma in the early 90s you gotta be wary of some of it is works even some early pride
I have to hit like that because I have problems with my knuckles and tendons. It's very effective. I call it the tiger paw. You can't lay an eyebrow open but you can control a ko very well. And break noses and ribs.

I wonder if fighters would punch with their fists for more range and a harder impact or with their palms to not injure and break your hands if fighters had to fight without any hand protection.
Well, it wasn't illegal. So why are you whining? The rule was no punching with closed fists. Opened hand slaps weren't mandatory. It was just the way some people struck. Bas chose to use palm strikes. Soooo.... wah wah 🤷♂️ but now you know. You're welcome.

For self defense u even get taught to use ur palms in a street fight scenario since u ll hurt urself way less like that and might even accidentally do the Jon jones and poke their eyes
Power Slap is absurd; it’s diverting money and attention from the real potential sport opportunity here: Bikini oil grappling competition, with points for take downs, submissions, and pinning. Imagine all your favorite retired female fighters fighting in a pool of the UFC’s proprietary blend of lubricant; all in super HD, all in slow-mo. Tell me people ain’t watching that. Tell me with a straight face people ain’t buying that.
He faught in pancrace that only allowed open palm strikes neck and above. Thats how he faught before the UFC so changing the rules was like gift wrapping him a belt. 😂😂
I agree in a way, but not being knowledgeable of all martial arts isn't ignorance. Striking with your palm, as opposed to your first or elbow, is used less often because it doesn't cause the same level of damage. Yes, people can still be severely injured, but people not knowing about it isn't ignorance. How do you expect anyone to learn if you criticise them for not knowing?
