There is a big basic difference between Diamox and Ibuprofen. Diamox does NOT work on the symptoms, it actually speeds up the acclimatisation process. Ibuprofen on the other hand improves the blood circulation in the brain (headache caused by HACE/brain swelling), which certainly makes life easier, but that is not acclimatisation.
I could watch you guys all day. I have watched your original trek video a heap of times and it always makes me want to get back out there.

Great video. Lots of useful info. We're going to EBC in a little over two weeks ( Sept. 23). This would be part of my preparation for my summit bid in Spring of 2021. In other words, I'm doing this trek twice! I'm carrying a little extra weight on this trek. I'm bringing in 5 pounds of dried up beef to give to the dogs for treats. I think the extra weight is worth it.

Ama Dablam BC has a lodge at Mingbo pasture. You can stay there for a night replacing first (acclimatisation) night in Dingpoche because they are at the same altitude.

Yeah, I'm also working to make sure more women are represented in my hiking videos -- and always trying to get female friends to join these trips! And in the Tour Du Mont Blanc packing list video, I also got my girlfriend (in person) to give a bunch of recommendations to women hikers in terms of clothes and other gear, so hopefully that helps too! -Hank
I'm bringing my Xero Shoes Z-trail sandals on my next trip for the evenings. Easy to pack and super minimal.
I've been looking at those too as a super light camp shoe. How do you like them? My only concern about them is that with Crocs or real sport sandals, you can also hike in those in a pinch (if your normal shoes are lost or destroyed), but I doubt the Z-Trail Sandals can be hiked in.
About the antihistamines, from a Forbes article dated Sept 13 2023 "Outside the U.S., in many jurisdictions, including Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden, Benadryl is only available with a prescription. This is because as a first-generation antihistamine diphenhydramine crosses the blood-brain barrier, which causes sedation in patients. Moreover, the FDA has issued warnings that taking higher than recommended doses of the antihistamine Benadryl [sometimes called Benadryl Original] can lead to serious heart problems, seizures, coma or even death. The newer generation, less-sedative OTC antihistamines, such as Claritin (loratadine) and Zyrtec (cetirizine) are generally considered safer than first-generation ones."
Thanks for the info. While diphen has been an essential part of all first aid kits for many decades, I have seen the recent articles and studies showing that 1) it's not good for a sleep-aid because the resulting sleep quality is low and it makes you drowsy and confused even after you wake up, 2) Allegra, Claritin, and Zyrtec work faster and longer as antihistamines, and 3) long-term use of Benadryl appears to have a link to dementia, though how it is linked is not exactly clear. Based on this, I'll suggest a different antihistamine in future videos.
@@HankLeukart Granted this video is from about 4 years ago and a lot has changed since then. I'm from Australia and the Benadryl Original with diphenhydramine is now prescription only, but interestingly I've still seen it in imported First Aid kits. A brand called "Adventure Medical Kits" from Littleton, New Hampshire sell a kit called "Ultralight / Watertight 0.7 First Aid Kit" at the Australian store "Paddy Pallin" which lists "Antihistamine (Diphenhydramine 25 mg)". When I read that I was like "whoah - I thought that stuff was banned in Australia!" If I bought that kit I'd replace the diphen with something else - probably Zyrtec (Cetirizine hydrochloride) because that is eliminated in the urine, and seems to have less side effects when compared to Loratadine and Fexofenadine hydrochloride based ones. But at the end of the day people just need to go with what works for them.
In terms of trekking pants, would I be fine to get a lightweight thin water resistant pair and just get the warmth from the base layers underneath?
Nice video but one thing should be noted Ibuprofen is strictly contraindicated if a person is having shortness of breath ,a bronchospasm or has a history of asthma.It can cause life threatening hypersensitivity reaction in these scenarios.

It's always interesting to hear people who prioritize light packs over comfort recommend necessary gear. You gotta hike your own hike, but folks should understand that just because THESE folks didn't "need" a sleeping bag (or a down layer) doesn't mean you'll be comfortable or enjoy yourself without them. Most trekking companies warn clients that temperatures during any time of the year vary, especially over 4000m. Ultralighters are a special breed.
Do you want to miss the best sunrise you may ever see because you packed like a gram weenie and you don't have the layers to hike up to the spot to watch it?
i agree that it's a fine line, because comfort and enjoyment is very correlated to the weight of your pack, but you also don't want to be cold. in this specific case, all the tea houses had blankets so we were rarely cold. there aren't many treks where i'd suggest no sleeping bag like we did here.
@@HankLeukart My point was also that just because you guys had weather that didn't require a sleeping bag doesn't mean that people going to EBC a week before or a week after didn't have temperatures 10 degrees lower at Gorak Shep.
Gram weenies are so used to sacrificing creeping amounts of comfort that they are no longer typical. They don't know what it's like to have normal standards of comfort. NOBODY should ever take the advice of an ultra-lighter if they're not an ultra-lighter themselves. or do so at your own peril or misery.
Also--some people sleep warmer than others.

The temperature information would make sense if you let us know when you were hiking. You mention it being 45 degrees, but when is it 45? March? September?

you can descend as fast as you want with no risk. it's the ascent where you need to be careful and slow.

About money: ATMs are not reliable even in Kathmandu, much less in Namche. Also, actually you get better exchange rates using real cash (remember cash?) from currency exchange kiosks in KTM, Boudanath has best rates. Banks have best rates, but there is bit more bureaucracy Difference can be up to 8%. When changing bigger amounts like over $500 at a time, you can haggle for slightly better rates.

What about trekking poles, it seems you guys used them, but didnt talk about them?
yeah, we use them and like them. helps to reduce strain on your knees going down and also helps you stay balanced with a pack on your back.
You DO need a sleeping bag. Spend some money and buy an ultra-lite,ultra warm bag that is worth its weight at the higher elevations.
i never got cold with the provided teahouse blankets and my sleeping bag liner, but i know some people do "run colder" than me (like my girlfriend), so people should definitely consider their past experiences

Both fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters in Nepal have major safety problems.
