I got several 6's and a couple over 7 on a Stanley jig that color that Bill Dance turned me on to back in the mid-80's. It boils down to simple VISIBILITY.
Hey Matt. I have a 9 1/2 pounder on my wall that I caught back in 1989 on a jig just about like the one you showed. I tied the skirt myself. It was a 40 strand black rubber skirt with about 20% chartreuse content. I’ve been fishing that color since the 70’s and it still works today in every part of Texas that I fish.
The Z-man "crosseyez" flipping jig comes in a color called "hot black" that is very similar to this. It is a very affordable jig with a hand-tied skirt and is built around a smaller hook that is great for spots and smallmouth. One of your biggest fans here Matt! Keep up the good work and I look forward to hearing you on the Tuesday night podcasts in the future
Matt, just a thought: I've been building jigs for 30 years, in the studies I've done on colors, through internet, bass are bichromatic, green and red are colors they can see, but they also have a highly developed sense of Contrast, I've been adding a coupe contrasting strands for a while and I believe through experience that contrast is generally important, with black, blue as contrast works, I have experimented with base colors black, green pumpkin, brown, adding contrasts of white, chartreuse, electric blue, purple, almost any contrast increases the bite, don't overwhelm the bait with contrast. I'm no expert but a contrast in the bait seems very important to me it works. some contrasts are seasonal. and always remember sun penetration the deeper you go the more the colors blend to black. Really enjoy what you are giving us.
Matt, I can say for sure that’s a winning color combination. I started making my own hand tied rubber skirt jigs because I couldn’t find a decent red & black jig with rubber skirt. I make a jig that looks exactly like the one you show in black & chartreuse and have had good luck with it. I also make black & blue with just a few strands of chartreuse that’s a winner. The rubber makes all the difference. I’d love to send you a handful.
Had a good friend that used that jig on the Arkansas and white Rivers. He learned about it by fishing BASS tournaments in the 90's. Great tip Matt, I'd forgotten about it.
I have had huge success with that color jigs in the 90s, I got on the Missouri craw color and have not used the bumble bee color very much, thanks for the reminder and I gonna make some up.
Randy throws a black and yellow jig with a Sapphire Zoom Super Chunk . I seen it either on his channel or a Fish the Moment video . I've always wanted to give it a shot . I think it would work well in the pre-spawn or spawn - excellent . A black and chartreuse works well on Douglas , I can see the black and yellow for sure
Great tip! Black and yellow is definitely old school. I can remember them on the old okie bug spinner baits, the hula poppers and jigs…now I have to go make some! I bet it would be good on a bladed jig….hmmm.
Yellow in and of itself seems to be a rare color for soft plastics as well. I’ve only seen generic soft plastics (the type that usually come with a tackle box or spin casting combo) and maybe a few floating worms. I always looked for oddball colors to fish so long as the bait was of decent quality. I used to tear fish up with purple/ pink tail creme worms all year long.
I use that color on a spinner bait. Gold Colorado single blade with green pumpkin or black grub trailer. Sometimes I paint the throat of the bait orange as well.
Another great one. I tie something similar, but I haven’t found a yellow that I’ve liked so far. I might have to tie up some rubber skirts in black and yellow.
Congrats on the shout out on Randy's channel, you're doing great stuff! That's my favorite color jig. I like the Keitech tungsten finesse jig in black and chartreuse with a green and chart crazy flapper in warm water and the Maxscent chunk in cold water for spots.
Funny how we overlook things that are right before our eyes. When fishing for crapy we use a beetle spin that is black and yellow. Have also caught Walleye, northern, and bass on that beatlel spin.
As always Matt great stuff!!I love those stories when the pro say what is this guy doing??!! You never know what just might work…..that’s why we all have way too much tackle!! Lol….that “yellow” does look a lot like chartreuse. Where do you buy your skirt material??!! I tie my own as well and would like to know where you shop. Hope your back holds up…..I’m like you I shovel myself!! Happy and healthy New Year to you and your family!!
One of the things I really enjoy about you is your humility. Its kind of funny, but another guy I know says to use a yellow trick worm segment threaded onto the hook above the chunk trailer. he says fish can't stand it even if your jig color is something other than black. Maybe bass just like a little yellow. lol
@@MattStefanFishing I also just found a card of Stanley jigs in that color. Way too much tackle. Stanley jigs were my favorite in the 1980's. They haven't seen the light of day until today. 😁

Lunkerlure makes a jig that looks like that. A rattleback jig in Texas craw. I throw the single rattle. Seems to be a better hook up. They make a triple rattle also.

I live on Lake Cumberland and fish against Mike Devere regularly he is a great jig fisherman and a great guy. This color is a big deal around here in clear and muddy water. I would bet he was throwing a Zorro Booza Bug with a Big Salty chunk.. Great channel!
That kinda of reminds me of this all black skirted spinnerbait with a red head and gold blades. I absolutely hammered them on it until a pike got it, makes you wonder what gets the fish fired up on those off beat colors? Is it actually from weather fronts or fishing pressure?
Off topic question. Have u experimented with the gamakatsu skip gap hook on senkos or ribbon tail worms. What do you think of that hook compared to an ewg or offset worm hook
I was just about to say you should make custom skirts until I head you say you do already. One thing I would like to see is berkley make the powerbait skirt material in just the tabs so we can make custom colors with the scented skirts.
I like this color but I was only able tom find it in pawn shops and stuff so- I have no idea who made the jigs I have in this color. They're good jigs though. The one I really like has th spider cut on it- it's a finesse jig- and it has a round head with a flat top and weird little ridges along the flat head. No idea what the ridges are supposed to be for but- it works great, I love the way it falls and stands up off bottom- and if you pick it up it just naturally rocks forward and sits back down again. So, you can just slowly work it along bottom, barely picking it up so it just rocks forward an inch or two and stands back up- it gets destroyed.
black & chartreuse is my muddy water jig color....on that note...you should do a video on cold rising water with temps dropping. Most people just go home.
Funny I recently started buying my own jigs making my own skirts tying on this color and they love it. Most jigs you buy now are some type of green pumpkin or black and blue and the fish are conditioned to seeing it so I want to throw something different this is what I came up with
