Great tip. Slack line snapping a bait works good with jerk baits and lightweight vertically falling tube jigs. Thanks for the vid, keep up the great work
New Subscriber here. I’ve loved Bass fishing for as long as I can remember. For a long time, I used a Texas rigged Culprit worm and would catch Bass all day long. That was when I was a teenager and before I joined the Navy. Fast forward 25+ years (ok…35 😂) and I use all kinds of baits for Bass fishing. The one bait I love to use is a Jig. There’s something about using a Jig that puts me in direct contact with the Bass. I have no idea what it is, but I love it! I have never tried stroking a Jig, but after watching this video, I’m wanting to try it. Sounds like a solid technique and makes perfect sense in that it replicates a fleeing Crawdad or bait fish. Thank you for posting this video. 👍👍
Thanks thanks so much for the info. I'm dedicating this month to learning how to fish a jig. Caught my first bass on a jig the other day. It was a 3 pounder in a place I normally catch dinks on a Texas rig. I will be using your tips. Great info!
Really appreciate you giving insight into what real bait would do. I am %100 one that would just slow jerk a bait in, with slight changes in how I jerk the bait in.
The bigger bass usually eat it on the initial fall.. but if not.. unless its 50 degrees.. I'm hopping that kicking up dirt. Just remember you move that jig a mile even if you think you're barely moving it.
Here are the 2 best tips I ever got on fishing jigs with weed guards and they have improved my hook UPS 100% . The 1st came from ATV host and former pro by the name of Orlando Wilson about 35 years ago on his TV show. And this works for any jig with a weed guard except maybe a flipping jig and Jake. Spread the weed guard out you don't need that thickness other than a flipping jig and it will help you get the hook through the weed guard better and we'll still be witness and as a matter of fact will help keep weeds from the side of the bait away from the hook to. The other chip came from Al linner sir I'm one of his shows about 35 years ago also. I have never seen it since. He talked about using a crawfish imitator imitator on your jakes.. He talks about stringing it on the hook but instead of letting it flow straight off the back of the hook to string it about a 3rd of the way up the bend in the hook . This makes the pincher's stand up as you fish it just like a real crawfish does when it's trying to protect itself.. I saw him at a seeing Croix accident saying croy exhibition 2 years ago and asked him if he still does that because I never see it on the shows.. He says absolutely ! Try it and you'll see what I mean when using a crawfish plastic. There have been some Bates that have been developed with air pockets in the pictures to do just that when all you have to do is run that c*** but that crawl a 3rd of the way up the bend in the hook.
Sorry for all the typos but I fat fingered the send button before I could correct them.. That 2nd tip came from Al Linder.. He was at a Saint Croix Event.
I spread those weed guards on every jig I use from an archie style bass jig to swim jig's, 2 Ned jigs. of course the only one where you would run the crawfish up one 3rd of the way up the hook has to do with casting jigs.all the other presentation the lure runs straight off the back of the hook.still spread the weed guard.
Matt, I forgot you did this video. It addresses the question I asked the other night when you were using the compact canterbury flippin jig. I'm glad I watched it again. You have some good stuff. I would love to have the opportunity to fish with you one time.
Definitely my go to technique win lose or draw. 9/10 I catch one good one on a jig. It or shakey. If they are just biting both the yeah.. I'm probably in the money. Although. .I've came a long way in adding other fish to bag. They call me Joe Bass or Big Fish Joe around here. On hook sets.. if i feel bite.. i real down tight and jack that sucker. . If it's a hard quick bite.. just got to hope they have it and get as much slack up as you can
Great stuff as always Matt. Catching my first bass on a jig was the hardest lure for me to get bit, not sure why. After that first bass I’ve had great success and confidence in jigs. Fun to fish and a big fish lure for sure!! Thanks for the video!!
Jig fishing is quickly becoming my 2nd favorite way to catch bass...(topwater). Caught 1, 3+ and 2+, yesterday both off a swimming jig, but I was letting it hit the bottom in 10-12', slow reeling with that pop you were talking about
Matt great video. I love fishing a jig. I mostly feather it like you said. My question is can you explain the hookset on that type of retrieve? How you set the hook based on when you feel the bite in different positions of that retrieve.
Hey Mr Stefan excellent video thanks for the great tip on popping the jig I have a huge interest in jig fishing I've been trying to learn as much as I can from you and Randy hey Mr Stefan where do I send the check to bro this information is key 🗝️ thanks for sharing and spending the time to teach us to be a better angler . Hey Matt you are one sharp guy I loved that tip about the mono for the Carolina rig. GOD bless you and your family your pal fisherman Mike.
I’m going to make sure I have the correct line tie for the conditions I’m fishing. Any additional tips on how to not get hung up fishing from the bank. Thanks.
Matt I recently bought about 50 Rapala clackin raps can you take a second and tell me what you think of them an what they are worth. I catch a bunch on em,thanks
My biggest question is about when to use jigs with rattles. I never fish a jig with a rattle but is there a time and a place for using a jig with a rattle?
Nice I was using the Compact Pitching Jig yesterday in 1/2 ounce in Deeper laydowns at Lanier yesterday hooked up with a 4 pound plus Spot pitching it and shaking it in the wood great tips, and a great Jig! What are you Favorite colors Matt? Along with Size?
This channel is pure fishing knowledge and none of the fluff.

Yeah i think a lot of people don’t realize i much they are moving the bait
I just spent the last two days wire tying a bunch of my jig skirts including my Dirty Jigs. I have that same Luke Clausen jig too.
Nice!

Matt great video. I love fishing a jig. I mostly feather it like you said. My question is can you explain the hookset on that type of retrieve? How you set the hook based on when you feel the bite in different positions of that retrieve.
No matter where you feel the bite reel down and set the hook. Don’t ever try to set the hook when your rod tip is up high
Thanks for sharing
My pleasure
Matt going up with the fishing tip! Good lookin bro 😎
Thanks for watching!

Another great video

What are you Favorite colors Matt?

Awesome! I love the 1/2 oz in “The Go To”
New subscriber here, thanks for the video Matt!
Thanks!
so when you set the hook on a jig , do you reel down to where you can barely feel the fish then set ? or just before you would feel the fish?
Reel down and take all the slack in first
I’m a hopper too , no drag for me
sounds good
Thanks for the tips. When casting a jig, do you do those pops for the entire retrieve?
A good portion of it yes
Why does feathering a jig trigger strikes? Why do most people use that retrieve? Thanks
Its just what everyone assumes you do with a jig...slow crawl it on the bottom. Which works, but it works even better when you mix in a few hops.
Do u normally use rattles on your jigs?
Not normally but i do like them in dirty water or fast current
Line size?
15 lb fluorocarbon
Is your name pronounced Ste_ fawn or Stef_ Ann.?
