This is by far the most comprehensive, in-depth list of every SMS game I've ever seen. While I haven't played much of the SMS, the one game I did play (and beat) is Ninja Gaiden on there. Definitely a fun installment! A lot of games here that I want to try out myself and want to play! TC, this is easily your best video to date (it is up there with your TC Show episodes), and you can tell how much the SMS meant to you to compile this superb compendium. Excellent video man!
Wow, thank you so much for the kind words. Ninja Gaiden looked so fresh and clean on the SMS, I loved how it was portrayed and the critics agree with you that it's a must play. I hope you get your hands on a SMS some day as it's pretty neat. There are a few games that I think you'd love to play, Zillion being one of them. I also think you should try out the Cyber Shinobi after your love for the series. Thanks for watching and supporting!
What a great choice for your top pick! I love wonder boy 3 too. Like you mentioned it has just about everything and those bosses were iconic! Thanks for watching the video buddy, I appreciate every like and sub. Thanks!
It is the best game by a simple rationale: many of the other great gamed on the SMS were either good ports or remakes of other games on other systems. The Dragons trap is a system original, and the only one good enough to get people to make a VERY good remake.
You have a lot of great memories then! I love the library of Master System games and it was fun to discover new ones while creating thsi video. Thanks for watching!
Wonderboy 3 is for me the best game ever on Sega Master System. Good story, good game play, control is perfect, it had everything any player wanted. Really wondering why it isn't ranked number 1. 😮😮😮😮😮
There's not much to wonder, from what I can gather it wasn't a subjective decision but an objective analysis of many reviews published for each game and a mean score from all of them then produced. So the reason it isn't number one is that on average there were other games reviewed higher than it. Not really anything else to say beyond that.
It's too bad some of the best games on the system have technically superior versions on the Genesis. It makes it hard for anyone who didn't grow up on it to love it. Shout out to Brazil for keeping it relevant for so long. A lot of those games probably wouldn't have received ports if the Master System didn't dominate that one particular region.
I agree, I'm thankful that the Master System received many ports even if they weren't as technically sound. One port that is particularly great is the Sonic the Hedgehog as it's almost a different version altogether. Thanks for watching! Great to meet more Sega Master System fans!
R-Type, Alien Syndrome, Desert Strike, King's Quest, and Shinobi were my favorites by far. My brothers and cousins all hated King's Quest, Alien Syndrome, and Desert Strike for some reason, which I never understood. Maybe because I could play them for hours and they had to wait forever for their 'turns' LOL. Anyhow, awesome list/video, brought back a lot of childhood memories for me.
Haha! I remember those days of watching your friends play video games and having to wait your turn. Those are some awesome games you mentioned. Thanks for watching and for the kind words, always great to meet another SMS fan.
amazing video, clearly you've put a lot of work on it! But if I can give you a suggestion, please remove the background music when playing the music/sounds of the games, because this way it's pretty painful to listen how they were overlapping all the time :D
Thank you so much for the kind words! I'm making more of these types of videos (working on one for the Sega Saturn) and I agree I'll remove the audio behind the gameplay moving forward. I unfortunately edited the video without proper headphones and that was a big mistake as I didn't hear the background music. My bad!
Alex Kidd in Miracle World was always my favorite - I would have ranked Cloud Master a bit higher. Also, Snail Maze - although a simple game still brings back some great memories. And although Astro Warrior is a quick game - I found it pretty challenging. Fun to go back down memory lane and hear the music again (esp from Parlour Games, Alex Kidd and the Lost Stars, and Quartet). Thanks for putting this together!
Love hearing all your input on this. There's some wonderful games on the SMS and it was fun to put them in the order as the critics ranked them. Astro Warrior's music is engrained in my brain from my childhood, and Snail Maze is a great addition for some quick fun. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for the great compliment. That means a lot that you were able to see the passion I have for retro gaming. The SMS is pretty sweet, if you ever have a chance to try it out don't pass it up! Thanks for watching and thanks for the awesome comment!
Back in 93 there was this store I found called Toy Liquidators they had hundreds of Master System titles for 10 dollars. I found probably about 20 titles that I would never find anywhere else because they where from Brazil. So I definitely lucked out. And I know so because I had so much trouble finding a virility of titles in normal stores back then. 🍻
Thanks for this vid! I had about 15 games for the Master System as a kid when our house got robbed. I couldn't remember which ones, so thanks for the trip down memory lane 👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks for watching and thanks for the kind comment! I love the Master System but man, I'm so sorry to hear about your house getting robbed. What a terrible thing. Glad this brough back some good memories for you. It's a cool system.
Finally was able to finish this after watching it over a few days! Really great long form content man! Video was super informative and I learned more about the SMS then I knew. So many cool games. I wish Sega though gave an equal amount of love to these games that they do the ones on the Genesis because eventually these games will be lost to time. Looking forward to the next one!
I appreciate you taking the time to watch this! It was fun to put this together because like you, I learned so much about the SMS and the game library for it. There’s a few games on my list for sure. You’re right, Sega didn’t launch too hot here but they made a good effort with the Genesis. Thanks again for watching buddy!
Props for the massive effort putting together this comprehensive video. One suggestion - don't add music when most clips have their own. The clash ruins the viewers' enjoyment.
Thank you for the kind words and for watching! I totally messed up on the background music, that's my bad! I've since made others like this without including the music.
Hey buddy! Thanks for checking out the video, yes I do plan on creating more videos for consoles like this one. Takes a lot of time and I’m finishing up with my retro gaming talk show but then I’ll start on the console videos again. Hit that sub button if you haven’t yet so you don’t miss them when they come out. Thanks for watching pal!
Just sat through the whole video. What a trip down memory lane. My very first games console was the Sega Master System 2 with Alex Kidd in Miracle World built in. I am in the process of converting my home office into an 80s retro room and planning on picking up the original console again and reliving my youth. Loved this. Just subbed to your channel 👌🏻
Always nice to see what the critics thought back in the days. This must have cost you a lot of time. I always wanted a Sega Master System but never got one as a kid. Comparing the graphics on the box with my Atari 2600 made me sigh about how awesome it would be if I got that console. Oh well, if that is the biggest disappointment of my childhood I have nothing to complain.
Hey buddy, I really appreciate you checking this video out and giving me a nice comment. I plan to do more videos like this one in the future for more consoles. It's funny when we look back on our childhoods and what we really hoped for. I wanted a PlayStation so bad for years and I finally got one. The Master System is beautiful and I was happy to showcase it. Thanks for watching, hope to see you around!
Alex Kidd in Miracle World is my number one, but I am so happy to see Asterix in the top 10. Such an underrated gem, and one of the greatest 8bit platformers of all time.
Alex Kidd is a fun one! I've yet to play Asterix but so many others have commented on how great it is, that I really need to bump it up my list to play. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!
Those Mickey mouse games looked absolutely awesome. I'd like to play some of those good ones. Nice video man You did a great job on this All that research and time spent to make this video should definitely be appreciated. I know all about putting a lot of time and energy into videos that nobody tends to care about. Keep up the great work buddy. ❤️
The Mickey games are fantastic. Lots of great gaming with those titles. Thank you so much for the kind words and saying you appreciate the video. It was a ton of work and I'm exhausted from it but with compliments like that it's all worth it.
Great video, thank you for the trip down memory lane! Just pointing out that the Olympic Gold footage shown is from the Genesis version. The MS one had only three lanes on the 100 m dash.
Oh shoot! I think you're right. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. It's fun to talk SMS games with others, but yeah I messed up on that one. Bound to happen haha.
It's such a great console that was very underrated. Thanks for watching this and supporting the video. I really appreciate it buddy! Let me know if you scratch that itch!
Great work. You've earned a sub. I will say that I can't believe some games are so low - Special Criminal Investigation and Super Tennis are amongst my faves - but just goes to show how all art is subjective!
Thank you so much for the support! I’ve always wanted to play Special Criminal Investigation. When producing this video I actually wrote that one down as one to play after. You’re definitely right, video games are art! Thanks again for the kind words and support.
Excellent video, a lot of work was put into this. Being a little nitpicky, the footage for Olympic Gold is from the Mega Drive version, and for Marksman/Trap Shooting is from Safari Hunt (which was part of this compilation in some regions, built-in in others). Also, hadn't realized before how many SMS games are Brazilian exclusives.
Yeah, it took me nearly three months to put together! Lots of work. I think you're right about the footage, I'm sure I slipped up haha. Thanks for watching though and for the kind words. The SMS was such a big hit in Brazil, there were a lot of games that we didn't get in North America.
It's Amazing how a lot SMS games look like early Genesis releases. Visually it was way ahead of the NES, the colors just popped off the screen. It's crazy to think that it was an 8 bit system. Thanks for the video. I appreciate the hard work and dedication you put behind your content. Awesome stuff.
The SMS was incredible and it’s always fun to meet others who enjoyed it too and appreciate it. Thank you for the kind words, they mean a lot. I’m working on other videos like this for other consoles. I appreciate the encouragement!
Yeah but the Nes had more games though. On the Master system I only like about maybe 10 games on this. The Wonder Boy games 1-3, Shinobi, Kensieden, Rambo 2, Bomber Raid, Gangster Town & Safari Hunt. Out of those games I listed I only come back & play 2 of them. Which are Shinobi & Wonder Boy 2. Other games on this system I won't play them just because they aren't fun, too complex or you really struggle in them to finish them.
Racking up the views with this one man! Well deserved. I know some time got sunk into it. Was able to watch about a third of it while slacking at work. Definitely gonna finish it. This system is a newer obsession of mine so I am digging it. Hope your doing well my friend. 🍻
Thanks, buddy, this took about a month and a half to create so it was a lot of work. Hopefully, people find it and enjoy it. I appreciate you watching it, especially at work 😂😂. The SMS is so cool, I love it and I'm happy that you're getting into it. Make sure you play Zillion!!
That’s very cool that Dynamite Duke was the first game! It was one of the games I discovered while making this video. I’m happy you experienced the memories of the SMS, that was my intention with this video, thanks for watching!
Great video mate. So many memories. Alex Kidd was mind blowing. I'm not sure if Australia got every one of these games. I recall playing a lot of games with the basic covers as they were often much cheaper and more readily available. Good times
Happy that you enjoyed the video buddy! Alex Kidd was a must-own as an SMS fan. Lots of great platformer and the color palette was incredible. Always fun to meet another SMS fan. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!
Having played Master System since the 1990s, and watching this video, I see a pattern: many games that are over too soon, because they are too easy and/or too short. It's a shame, since I like the system has a lot of potential.
Happy to hear you've been playing the Master System since the 1990s! Super cool, always fun to meet another fan of the console. Some games were pretty short in my opinion like Transbot but there's still plenty of awesome games to find. I really recommend Zillion if you haven't played that one. Thanks for watching! I appreciate it.
Well said! Haha thank you for the comment and watching this video. I think there's some value to critic scores but for the most part it's best to the gamer to discover the game for themselves and find the joy or pain in playing a game. There's plenty of games that I've played that critics have crapped on that I love. Thanks again for watching!
Castle Of Illusion was so incredibly good on the master system, i never played the second game, but from what i can see they somehow improved that incredible game, I'm so glad the remake lives up to the expectations of the original!
Castle of Illusion is so good and I still need to add it to my collection. Those Disney Platformers were amazing, including the Donald Duck games. Thanks for watching, friend!
They sure were! Haha. I try and find the good in every game but sometimes that can be tough and the critics didn't sugar coat it. Some of the higher up games I still need to play for myself. Thanks for watching!
The problem of this list is that review scores were all over the place due to what was played in what region. Desert Strike being Number 1 is weird and Chuck Rock 2 being 4 shows how this way of ranking things doesn't work. 😆
That is very true, some of the soccer or "futbol" games were rated very highly in Europe where in the United States the scores were less positive. There is a big bias in some areas. Thanks for watching and dropping a comment!
Miracle Warriors (#139) is underrated and it has great music. Zillion is one of the best games on the console. Very fun to play even today with an emulator. The codes are easy to remember once you realise that each symbol is one of the 10 digits with a mirrored version of itself. Thank you for the video!
You're talking my language! Zillion is my favorite game of all time on the SMS. It was so far ahead of its time with the codes. I recently replayed it a few years back and it still holds up. Thanks for watching and thanks for the kind comment!
What I recommend emulator users do on titles with up for jump is to assign up to a button. If the game is not having ladders you need to climb up you can go a step further and disable the d pad up altogether. With a good d pad though (I use the 8bitdo M30 or Pro 2) you shouldn't have any accidental up presses and can play these games with a traditional button to jump. I highly recommend the M30 as the overall best controller to play all standard (i.e. non special controller requiring) SMS games. I assign button 1 to A on the M30 and then duplicate it on X with turbo activated. Button 2 ditto but on B and Y for turbo. For those few games where up is jump, I actually assign it to the right shoulder button. Very comfortable and fantastic d pad.
Wow this video should have been a huge lot of work! Thank you very much! As someone who never had a Master System but I want to discover more of retrogmaing stuff, it's a really interesting and useful guide on SMS games!
Thank you so much for this comment, it really means a lot and keeps me going in creating content. I'm happy you were able to discover some games for the SMS. It's a really cool console that I hope others enjoy and try out. I appreciate the kind words and comment. Happy gaming, my friend!
Excellently constructed video man. I almost 100% disagree with many of the scores and your own opinions on said games, but that’s what is also great about this vid. Keep up the good work! #JusticeForAlteredBeast #JustForCloudMaster
The disrespect, Rastan at 50 and a soccer game at 6? Rastan is a top 5. Both graphics and sounds are among the very best (if not the best). And one of the best arcade ports, if not the best in that era.
Thanks for watching buddy! The critics that gave the games the scores were definitely subjective. It's fun to hear how everyone disagrees or when others share their favorite games on the console. It was a lot of work to put it together but I'm happy to give this console all the love.
@@TigerChainsawVideoGames I just looove Rastan. Remember playing it in the arcades and having it for the SMS. Was very satisfied with the port they did. I thought it was impressive for an 8bit. SMS is not know for it's sounds, but Rastan had outstanding sounds for the console, very close to the arcade in every way. Can't wait until someone ports it to the Genesis.
I noticed that Space Harrier 3-D and Fantasy Zones II were one of those games in one of those Sega Club in the game Yakuza like a Dragon. Mad magazine's Spy vs Spy is great one! It is always nice to place traps 🙂 Rampart is really nice Arcade Game Cabinet game. Great detailed list of games.
Oh wow, I love hearing your memories from the Sega Club! Spy vs Spy looks very interesting and I need to play it myself. Rampart looks pretty neat too. I appreciate you watching this buddy. Thanks for the support!
Superb, I'd forgotten about Desert Strike, Phantasy Star and Golfamania with Penguin Land being incredibly addictive to beat. You even had Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego. Superb video, thank you.
Happy to hear you found this video! The Sega Master System sure is a neat console. Funny you mention Where in The World is Carmen Sandiego, that was a game from my childhood that I really enjoyed. If you like Phantasy Star, I have a whole retrospective on it in another video on my channel, it's very well-done if I don't say so myself. Hope to see you around the channel! Thanks for watching.
Wonder Boy 3, Ninja Gaiden and Phantasy Star would be my top 3 for sure. I come back to them the most often. However, Master of Darkness, Golvellius and the Mickey Mouse games are close! Great, comprehensive list. This is one of those consoles where there were very few Japanese exclusives, too, as opposed to the NES/Famicom for instance. Very useful project (I also agree about Alf being the worst :p)
Wonderful choices for your top games! Thank you for the kind words, it was a very long process to make this video but when thoughtful people like yourself enjoy it and leave a great comment it makes it worthwhile. LOL at Alf! 😂
Chuck Rock 2 was absolutely brilliant. It was so close to the MD game as well, which really surprised me. I have to admit that of the games I've played on the list (of which there's a lot I haven't, despite being an MS owner from the age of 8), I agree with most of your rankings. I remember I had Champions of Europe, it was probably the worst football game I ever played. I borrowed Great Football from a friend and couldn't take to it, plus Streets of Rage 2, what the hell happened there!? The first one was superb. I'm pleased to see your placement of Asterix, Land of Illusion and Wonderboy 3 so high up. How could it be otherwise? I still enjoy playing them today. A couple I slightly disagreed with were Road Rash, which I thought should have been higher, due to the quality of the conversion, and Lucky Dime Caper. I actually preferred that to Castle of Illusion. It was much more challenging , and I'd have it in my top four. Alien 3 i was surprised to see so low. It was a tough game and had amazing atmosphere, even if it got a bit samey. MK2 was a phenomenal achievement on the MS, and considering the SNES version of MK1 didn't have blood, hats off to the programmers. Golvellius is one of the most underappreciated games I ever knew. I used to while away hours on that, yet my mates could never understand why... Desert Strike, not much to say there. Unbelievable piece of work on the MS. Truly one of my favourite titles on any console, ever. It was the variety of missions I used to love.
What an amazing comment! Thanks so much for watching the video, I can tell you appreciate all the work that went into it. It's always great to meet and hear from other lovers of the Master System. It was my first console and holds a dear place for me. Thanks again for the great comment.
@@TigerChainsawVideoGames This really was one of the best videos about the master system library but i think you forgot to include ecco tides of time and deep duck trouble.
@@TigerChainsawVideoGames You are right about deep duck trouble, although it deserved more time in the list but No12 is the original ecco the dolphin, not it's sequel.
@@foxred1007 So the original Ecco the Dolphin was only released on the Genesis. The No. 12 slot is Ecco the Dolphin Tides of Time but I just didn't write the subtitle in that one : )
Great video! It would be nice to include in the description the list of all games with their respective timestamp to be able to go directly to any game within your video. Thanks!
You’re right that would be a great addition to a video like this! I do have the list in order but time stamping it would be a lot of work. Perhaps I can post the list and pin it. Thanks again for watching!
I'll always love the first Wonder Boy only because back in like '90 I would play it at my mates house and he would always have a melt down over not making jumps properly and hogging more turns lol.
That one looks so good to me! I really want to play it soon and I love the cover art for it. Thanks for pointing out what a great game it is, I'll be sure to check it out. Thanks for watching.
This is a wonderful video! Thanks for all the hard work. It would have been nice to not have the background music playing while game music was playing.
Thanks for watching! I appreciate you checking this out, I'll be making more videos in the future like this one for other consoles and I'll leave the background music off when the gameplay is going. Thanks for leaving a comment!
That was an epic countdown Mate, A lot of time and effort went into making it, I am a new to your channel and have just subscribed, I look forward to checking out more of your content, Have a wonderful weekend
Thank you for taking the time to not only watch but write a thoughtful and kind comment. It was a lot of effort to make this and I appreciate you recognizing it. Also, thanks for the sub!
Had a lot of nostalgic love for Wonder Boy in Monster World's Master System port. Was never a fan of the Mega Drive version; after the 8 bit port, and having played games like Wonder Boy III The Dragon's Trap, I always felt the 16 bit port of Monster World was too cluttered with an outrageous difficulty spike. But the Master System version is a game I truly adore. So you can imagine my fanboy fury at seeing it at 64 on the list! What the heck were the critics of the day THINKING?? Its nice that its in the Top 100, but for me its easily in the Top 5. Mind you, the OTHER Wonder Boy RPG titles are ALSO in my Top 5, so...
The Master System version is truly a wonderful game. Stay tuned I've got a ton of videos discussing Wonder Boy releasing in 2025 where I share my own personal thoughts on it and dive into how great it is! Thanks for watching.
I also had a master system as a child. But all my friends had an NES. I was a bit envious of Mario and Megaman etc. and especially because I could not trade games.
Thank you so much for the kind words and for watching. It was a pleasure to put this together and I'm happy so many others are enjoying it as the Master System is special. Cheers!
This was a ride, I didn't know about Fantasy zone's all engines to keep the main weapon at all times! I don't agree with all the critics said, but it's to be put in perspective I imagine. and for an hour and a half video presenting that many games, I only spotted two minor mistakes (olympic gold video isn't the master system version, and Wonder boy in Monster World is listed as being "Wonder Boy in Monster Land" in the title containing the number rating). Very nice video to watch overall, the master system needs more love.
It's a fun little trick that I learned that helped me finally beat Fantasy Zone! Oh man, I wasn't aware of those errors, thank you very much for watching. I wish I could change them, but this video took me three months to make so I can't fix them, but I appreciate you watching so thoroughly. Thanks for watching buddy, and leaving a thoughtful comment. Always great to meet another Master System fan!
Hey buddy! Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. I'll explain kinda how I put together the video so hopefully it makes sense. I took the median score of a bunch of reviews from publications and magazines of each game and compiled the list. The scores were determined by the critics, and I just put them in order. As for the notes on the games, I took a segment from each review and read them to describe the games. Some games I picked up positive praise, while others I picked out negative comments. Hope this clears up how the video was made!
Thanks for the kind words, it was so much work but I think it turned out well! The Master System is a pretty neat console that has some vastly underrated gems. I appreciate you watching this and supporting it. Hope all is well buddy!
Great video, lots of work. Just to mention, that was Safari Hunt and not Markman Shooter/Trap Shooter. I have to admit, the Master System is my favorite system of all time. Nostalgia from being in high school has a lot tobdo with it. It did have so many great games.
Thank you for watching and dropping a comment! It was a lot of work and I tried my best to be accurate with everything but something was bound to be amiss. Always great to meet more SMS fans, it's a great console.
@TigerChainsawVideoGames it was definitely in no way saying, "You screwed up". I was just pointing it out. No big deal! I enjoyed your video. I couldn't put a top 10 together for the Master System.. I would need maybe 20 places! So many good ones. Ys, Phantasy Star, Fantasy Zone 1&2, Rambo 3, Golvellius, Black Belt, Great Baseball, etc.. it was also a much "easier" time period for me, so when I think of the Master System, I think of those times..
I forgot about some these! Great memories. Well done on the list. Interestingly, Rambo: First Blood Part 2 was released in the UK as Secret Commando. I loved it.
Thank you for watching and leaving a kind compliment! Coury has me excited to play Rambo: First Blood Part 2 aka Secret Commando. Great to hear you enjoyed it.
Amazing library analysis, I wish there was no music in background, it is annoying when overlapping with the clip music. For some games I also would have preferred the original music rather than the FM music.. but I must probably be the only one preferring it to FM!
You're totally right, I made a mistake with the background music. I have a few other videos like this coming up and I made sure to keep the music out of the gameplay footage. Thanks for watching!
@@TigerChainsawVideoGames do you think it would be possible to issue a v2 of this video without background music (at least while the clips play?) This is IMO a worthy compendium of SMS, it deserves this extra bit of love :)
I loved how Sega gave players the option to play on either console as back then you probably only had one or the other. If this didn't make you want to play the SMS, I don't know what will! I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Terminator games sometime. Thanks for watching and supporting my guy!
Awesome video! It´s funny how we tend to rate higher games that are nostalgic to us.. we will always cherish those games that had some part in our childhood.. My number 1 will always be Phantasy Star :) keep up the good work
Thank you for the kind words! It was a lot of work to put together. Phantasy Star is a phenomenal choice, I did a whole retrospective on it. Thanks for watching and dropping a comment.
I would change the order of some games. For the biggest changes, I would bump up Master of Darkness, Sonic I, and Rambo First Blood Part II, and I would bump down Sonic II, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and sport games in general. And now, I got curious to try out Desert Strike.
Oh, I would change the order of a ton of them! For me, I adore Zillion and Wonder Boy the Dragon's Trap. Master of Darkness is another excellent title. Thanks for watching and giving your input. It's fun to see how the critics ranked the games when they were released. I need to get Desert Strike into my personal collection after hearing how amazing it was.
A very nice put together video dude must of took you ages to do 👊🏻 I’m just playing through my full sms pal uk set A-Z every Tuesday on my channel so good to see I have some great games to look forward too.
My guy it was sooooo much work! But I'm happy with the way it turned out. From one SMS fan to another, I appreciate you watching. That's sick that you have a full PAL set!! There were so many PAL games that I discovered making this video that I had no idea about. Super cool that you get to play them all.
My SMS King from across the pond! Thanks so much for the support, it's really neat how we share the same passion for such a great system. I'll always be thankful for the light phaser gun you sent me, super kind of you. I discovered a ton of games for the SMS doing this video and I really want to play more of it now. Thanks again for all the support, I wish you many years of happy gaming on the SMS.
Wow, that's really cool that it was your first console that you bought yourself. Loved to hear you had Alex Kidd in Miracle World. Thanks for the kind words and for watching!
Desert Strike is great on the SMS, I've never experienced the NES one but now I want to. Thanks for watching and dropping a comment, Phantasy Star is incredible and I did a whole retrospective on it on my channel.
The music during the intro is nice. What’s the name? I watched your vid with Coury and it was great so looking forward to this, I’ve been trying master system out on mister a lot since I only had 4 games for it as a kid so these vids are awesome.
Wow, thank you so much for the kind words and watching both videos. I appreciate it. Love to hear that you are getting into the Master System again, it's such a great console. The music I used at the beginning of the video is Stellar Wind by Unicorn Head. Thanks again for watching!
Yes, I'm thankful that emulation has helped others experience the Sega Master System. Some of the games can be very pricey! Thanks for watching and leaving an awesome comment. Hope to see you around more on the channel!
@@TigerChainsawVideoGames For sure man. Hopefully the algorithm does you a favor and allows your channel to grow. You should def be getting more views.
@@TigerChainsawVideoGames Thanks! I am definitely a Master System fan. My current project is playing through my collection of about 80 or so Master System games one game at a time, one game per week, so that I can appreciate my collection a bit more. I find it is a great way to slow down, and focus more on appreciating what I have
@@Malcoladdin I wish more people would do this! There’s such a missed opportunity when it comes to retro gaming, and it really takes you back to a different era and an appreciation for the simple things or tough challenges. What would you say some of your favorite SMS games are? I’d love to put some down on my list to play in the future.
@@TigerChainsawVideoGames Despite the critics not liking it, I would definitely recommend Dragon Crystal. It is a brutally difficult roguelike, but is very rewarding. Other favourites of mine are Gauntlet, Rampart, and Asterix, but everyone has different tastes. Try out a few different games and I'm sure you will have a great time
There are some incredible looking games for the SMS. Some with color palettes that are divine. Tons look gorgeous! Glad you found some that you like… sorry about Alf… not really lol
Thank you! I’ll tell you the secret to how I did it. Turn your right hand over and use your first two fingers to press the buttons instead of using your thumb. Just hold down the accelerator button and never let go of it. When you use your other finger for the brake it still slows you down. Just give it enough brake on and off on the corners to keep from losing traction and watch for the other motorcycles (obviously). I can’t remember exactly how long it took of constant playing (it’s been almost 35 years) but I’m sure it was between 2-3 hours for the score to go goofy. I wound up just shutting off the game because there was just no end! 😂 I actually played pretty much every game with my hand in that position for SMS, Genesis, NES, and super NES. I found it makes jump and shoot games, like Mega Man, much easier for timing jump and shoot areas. And on the Mega Man X games you can keep your power shot constantly charged and ready.
@@TigerChainsawVideoGames I find it fascinating how the very last games to be released on a console or microcomputer are sometimes so superior in graphics and performance to the earliest ones but use exactly the same hardware. I'm sure this is because the developers discovered all kinds of tricks to optimize code, learn from other coders examples etc...
I think i would have had dragons trap a little higher i remember playing it at the time thinking "this game is everything i've ever dreamed about" the way the game opens up for you to tackle in what order you would like it was truly something special, asterix maybe a little higher to it's a true great platformer than many americans missed out out because of A it being on a sega and B mario snobbery but it's a really a wonderful game full of really cool secrets, im glad somebody gives desert strike its dues it was very much like dragons trap in that is was one of those games at the time that felt amazing because how open ended it was so kudos to you for giving it the props it deserves i think because it's an EA game a lot of people might look down on it but at the time it was revolutionary
The Dragon's Trap is amazing and if this was my personal list... I'd have it top 3. Asterix I'm bummed that I missed out on being in North America, but I'd still like to try it someday. Thanks for watching and giving all your input, I love hearing opinions on Master System games so it was great to read your thoughts on some of the games.
Rescue Mission is definitely in there! As for Street Fighter, that was released only in Brazil on the SMS, so I didn't include it. These are just games in North America and PAL Regions. Thanks for watching! It's always great to meet more Master System fans around the world. Such a great community.
@TigerChainsaw I'm Def gonna watch for a fourth time, but I never saw "rescue mission". the military mefic on a handcraft rail car going on a set path saving wounded soldiers while you, a distant sniper or whatever, uses the light phaser to shoot enemies. it's a top down view. I'll rewatch. as for SF, some of what you showed in this, I could have sworn were brazil-only, too. and what you show for global defense is way different than my global defense. I'll report back after two more watchings.
I miss being a kid with free time! Not a care in the world.... I got some serious gaming done then, sounds like you did too! Great games you beat. Thanks for watching!
Thanks so much for the kind words and recognition! It means a lot to read them and I’m glad you took the time to watch the video. Hope to see you around!

Desert Strike...did not see that coming. Don't get me wrong, it's a great game (at least on other platforms that I've tried it on) but when I think Master System...well, I didn't even know the game existed on the Master System, and I've been a Master System Fanboy since about 1985, when I was 8 years old.
It surprised me too when the putting this list together that the best ranked game would be Desert Strike. Truth be told, I still need to play it myself but the critics overwhelming loved it. Putting this video together was a ton of fun because I discovered so many new games that I needed to try out. Thanks for watching and dropping a comment!

Thanks for such kind words! It was fun to see how the ratings turned out for the games. It’s a special system and I’m happy to give it love. Thanks for watching friend!
This is a great and comprehensive list. The analysis of Teddy Boy and others games are spot on. Sometimes I’ve felt you thought some games should be higher (like Black Belt) and others should be lower. But you’re following the critics grades, so it is understandable. I do think Desert Strike shouldn’t have be number one (that belongs to Phantasy Star), and only in top twenty, but it’s my opinion. And, while I do like the game, The Last Crusade has a terrible gameplay. It shouldn’t be that high.
Thanks for watching, I love your profile pic! Alis rocks. It was fun to see where the critics ranked the games but my list would be much more different. I'd love to try out Desert Strike sometime but it I need to get it into my library first. Thanks for the great comment.
This was amazing! Must have taken a lot of work to compile 😮. The only downside is that it evidences I have a poor choice in games 😁; lots of the lower ranked titles are my faves 🤣🤣 e.g. Thunderblade, chase hq, and even tennis. Crumbs, ALF is always silly money when it pops up (not often!); a further reason for me to stay well away. Bravo 👏👏. 👍😊🕹️
It was sooo much work buddy! I'm so happy you enjoyed this though as it makes it all worth it. There were plenty of games that ranked low that I still had plenty of enjoyment on. Curse ALF!! It's sooo expensive and it's so bad! Thanks again for watching, that's super nice of you. Cheers!
Same here. For some I expected them to be low, for others I was surprised (Gain Ground is awesome in my opinion, as well as Alien Syndrome). I also like The Cyber Shinobi, I played it last week and think it's misunderstood.
Hey there! Thanks for checking out the video, commenting, and asking a very valid question. James Buster Douglas Knockout Boxing was developed by Sanritsu and published by Sega in 1990, while George Foreman's KO Boxing was developed by SIMS and published by Flying Edge in 1992. GFKOB is a reworked version of JBDKB and while they are near identical there are some slight differences in graphics, title screens, speed select screens, and event introductions. Thanks again for watching!
Wonderboy, Wonderboy in Monster World, Wonderboy Dragon's Curse , Psycho Fox, Alex Kidd in Shinobi World, Asterix, Sonic, Sonic 2 and Sonic Spinball are all terrific games that are still very playable today. Sonic 1&2 and Sonic Spinball are not copies of their Genesis counterparts and a lot of people felt the Master System versions were as good or better. Ghostbusters, Ghouls and Ghosts, Marble Madness and Paperboy are allstill fun and were much better than their Nes counterparts. Captain Silver was and still is oddly addictive. If you love classic console RPGs then both Phantasy Star and Miracle Warriors are top notch. Fantasy Zone the Maze was much better than any 8 or 16bit Pac Man game. Golden Axe: Warrior is a Zelda clone that surpasses the original Zelda . Golvelius is a combination of the original Zelda and Zelda 2 on the Nes but with better resolution and colors. Penguin Land is also an interesting puzzler that is still enjoyable.
Loved reading this comment! Such passion for the Master System, and I agree with a lot of what you said. It's fun to be connected to the community of the master system and see what games people enjoy. My two personal favorites would be Wonder Boy III and Zillion. Thanks for such a great comment and for watching!
I enjoyed this entire video. Your narration was good and on the whole I agreed with most of the suggestions but some feedback, the background music gets in the way of the video game music and is a constant drone.
I really appreciate the kind words! I totally agree about the music. When I edited it I listened on my laptop and couldn’t hear it. Then when it was published it was different on different platforms. I’ll make sure that I remove it entirely for future videos! I’m making one on the Sega Saturn as we speak so stay tuned. Thanks for watching!
If you're interested, I did an entire retrospective on Astro Warrior, about 40 minutes long of diving into the plot and gameplay of it. I really enjoy the game and feel it's the perfect entry into the shoot 'em up genre. Thanks for watching!
Great video. I definitely disagree with some conclusions, but those are great games at the top.
How is it in-depth? He literally devotes one sentence to most games
Wonderboy 3 is my number 1. The story, graphics and charm was on another level. It was also huge and the dragon bosses were amazing.
What a great choice for your top pick! I love wonder boy 3 too. Like you mentioned it has just about everything and those bosses were iconic! Thanks for watching the video buddy, I appreciate every like and sub. Thanks!
The dragons trap if you used the password we3t0ne it unlocked everything...I still remember that from childhood.
It is the best game by a simple rationale: many of the other great gamed on the SMS were either good ports or remakes of other games on other systems. The Dragons trap is a system original, and the only one good enough to get people to make a VERY good remake.
@@bjrneirikstrkersen1021 I'd love a remake/remaster of Psycho Fox/Decap Attack!
dragons trap is my number 1 too! tbh i think it's my fave game across every console ever! x
Wow so many Master System games I remember played or owned
You have a lot of great memories then! I love the library of Master System games and it was fun to discover new ones while creating thsi video. Thanks for watching!
Wonderboy 3 is for me the best game ever on Sega Master System.
Good story, good game play, control is perfect, it had everything any player wanted. Really wondering why it isn't ranked number 1. 😮😮😮😮😮
I LOVE wonder boy III !! That would be my second favorite game on the system right behind Zillion. Great choice for your No. 1 pick.
1 of the Wonder Boy games should be ranked no 1. I prefer Wonder Boy 2 in Monster land. Straight fwd gameplay that you can beat in 1 sitting.
Cloud master was my favorite skillful game
I barely have played any SMS games in my life, but your passion for retro gaming and enormous effort in making this list get a 👍 from me!
Thank you for the great compliment. That means a lot that you were able to see the passion I have for retro gaming. The SMS is pretty sweet, if you ever have a chance to try it out don't pass it up! Thanks for watching and thanks for the awesome comment!
Only a few gun games with the few Side scrolling games are good on this system. That's it. NES had better games at this time & more variety of them.
What an awesome story! I’m very jealous you were able to get those games. Awesome!
The Snail Game was actually awesome. Spent hours, days, months on it.
I spent a lot of time with the Snail Maze as a kid. It was a lot of fun and that music was so cheery.
Is this format something you plan on revisiting for other systems as well, short reviews from worst to best? That would be really cool!
Thanks for all the kind words, and it's always great to meet more SMS fans. Best of luck collecting for your collection. Thanks for watching!
Wonderboy 3 and Sonic 1 are my all time favourite Master System games
Awesome to hear it! WonderBoy 3 is one of my all-time favorites. It's so good, and I'm happy you agree.
@@TigerChainsawVideoGames great minds eh. You ever play the 2017 remake? It's wonderful
@@TigerChainsawVideoGames Thank you for the great content 👍
Those Mickey mouse games looked absolutely awesome. I'd like to play some of those good ones. Nice video man You did a great job on this All that research and time spent to make this video should definitely be appreciated. I know all about putting a lot of time and energy into videos that nobody tends to care about. Keep up the great work buddy. ❤️
The Mickey games are fantastic. Lots of great gaming with those titles. Thank you so much for the kind words and saying you appreciate the video. It was a ton of work and I'm exhausted from it but with compliments like that it's all worth it.
Wonderboy III is the concessus GOAT game on the SMS
I can agree with that! Such a great game.
I’ve been thinking a bit about the master system lately and I’ve had a real itch to play the games, this is incredibly comprehensive .
It's such a great console that was very underrated. Thanks for watching this and supporting the video. I really appreciate it buddy! Let me know if you scratch that itch!
The Master System ahhhhhh you got to love it was a hugh success here in the U.K......Love you're video to amazing👍👍👍
Yeah I’m so happy it was a success in the UK! You guys got some awesome exclusives. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!
Dynamite Duke was my first game for the master system...your video has sent me back in time over 30yrs happy memories.
Miracle Warriors is that low? No way...
I’d like to see it higher on the list as well. I love the map that it comes with. Great game, thanks for watching!
Smurfs 2 and SCI are definitely not sub 5/10 for the SMS. Home Alone is decent as well. All in all, this critic can suck it.
Well said! Haha thank you for the comment and watching this video. I think there's some value to critic scores but for the most part it's best to the gamer to discover the game for themselves and find the joy or pain in playing a game. There's plenty of games that I've played that critics have crapped on that I love. Thanks again for watching!
@@TigerChainsawVideoGames Was joking with that last one tbh but glad you took it well hehe. Was fun to see it all compiled like this.
Critics were crazy harsh at the time! I didn't even know that games were still being made for it at the time of mortal Kombat and Jurassic Park
They sure were! Haha. I try and find the good in every game but sometimes that can be tough and the critics didn't sugar coat it. Some of the higher up games I still need to play for myself. Thanks for watching!
Critics didn't even play the games. The Ninja being worst than any US Gold games is just a joke.
And it is just an example.
@@TigerChainsawVideoGames Also half the games on this list were only reviewed in Europe and not by US or Japanese magazines.
Astérix (the first one) and the first Sonic are my absolute favorites. Astérix is so amazing.
Love to hear it! I'd love to get Asterix into my personal collection.
Haha you goofball, the only opinion in this list that's mine is the one for Zillion. The rest are directly from critical reviews. Thanks for watching!
@@TigerChainsawVideoGames I apologize, I thought you were the embodiment of crap review scores 🤣🤣🤣
@@SEGAblocks Oh I am but not in this case! Driver 9.7/10.
Black Belt and The Ninja are scored way too low. Other than that, pretty good.
@@foxred1007Thanks for watching! Deep Duck Trouble is No. 70 and Ecco Tide of Times is No. 12.

Very true! It gave me nightmares as a kid trying to beat level three. That OST for it is wonderful. Thanks for watching!
@@TigerChainsawVideoGames My best was the end of level two. And I’ve spent many hours in that game.
Love to hear the memories!
25:31 Dragon Crystal is underrated, quite a fun but simple roguelike adventure
That one looks so good to me! I really want to play it soon and I love the cover art for it. Thanks for pointing out what a great game it is, I'll be sure to check it out. Thanks for watching.
This is a wonderful video! Thanks for all the hard work. It would have been nice to not have the background music playing while game music was playing.
Thanks for watching! I appreciate you checking this out, I'll be making more videos in the future like this one for other consoles and I'll leave the background music off when the gameplay is going. Thanks for leaving a comment!

Master system = love
You said it best buddy! Thanks for watching and thanks for the great comment. Hope to see you around more!
I was the only kid I knew who had a SMS, it was both a curse and blessing. Mario and Megaman are great games to be jealous of. Thanks for watching!
Brilliant effort mate, really enjoyed the video. Going to come back and watch again
Monumental video, but I’m a bit confused by the scoring. I saw some games with 5.x praised and some games with 6.x defined horrible.
@@TigerChainsawVideoGamesthanks for the explanation! I understand, makes sense!
Wow! Fantastic video man! It's like full on documentary. Never knew much about Master System, but from the looks tho it has a lot of awesome titles.

I remember, years ago, playing Hang On for so long that the score stopped being displayed as numbers and were instead displayed as characters.
That is wild!! What a crazy feat that is. I was never very good at hang despite it being one of my childhood games. Cool to hear you did that.
@@paulbigsby2387 that is a crazy secret! That would be a fun video to make showcasing your hand and finger placements. Neat trick!

I think someone is a Sonic fan! haha love to see it. Great input, thanks for watching.
This is brilliant. Comprehensive and accurate. Love the MS but aye, there's a few howlers out there.
@@danielespeziari5545 I think Cyber Shinobi has some of the coolest artwork in all of the SMS. I need to give it a proper try.
@@danielespeziari5545 I love those games too particularly alien syndrome! I must give cyber Shinobi a second chance; kinda dismissed it a while ago. 😬
@@TigerChainsawVideoGames it was really enjoyable particularly as, aside from some poopy games, the rankings were fairly unpredictable. Great stuff 👍👍
James "buster" Douglas and George Foremen is the same game, with different name. 😂 Why is in different positions? 😂
Its a beautiful thing...thx for a great video!
Thanks for a great comment and for watching!
@@TigerChainsawVideoGames It was my pleasure bro, i may watch it again lol
You're tough with Astro Warrior. A lot of charm. I give it a 7.
If you're interested, I did an entire retrospective on Astro Warrior, about 40 minutes long of diving into the plot and gameplay of it. I really enjoy the game and feel it's the perfect entry into the shoot 'em up genre. Thanks for watching!
Great video. Backround music is irritating.
Yeah, it didn't sound that loud when I was editing. My bad! Thanks for watching!
