I am a 55 years old german. I am going to Prague for some beers for about 35 years now. At least once a year, sometimes twice. I can confirm that Pilsner Urquell IS THE BEST BEER IN THE WORLD. Even at home I'm drinking almost entirely Pilsner Urquell (in bottles of course).
By the way, my favourite pubs over the years have been/are the U Fleku (specially in the 80s when 0,5L cost 2,40 CZK ;-) ), U Tomas and U Snellu (Kleinseite, mala strana), U Dvou koček (which you have forgotten to mention as a zoo pub) and U Kalicha (Svejks pub).

I shall not challenge your statement on Pilsner Urquell but next time U cross borders travel therough Loket (Elbogen) near Karslbad and try local brewery Svatý Florián (St. Florian). ;)

I went to the Pilsner Urquell Brewery in Pilzn last month and drinking it there I have to say is hard to dispute this man’s opinion. Although, Bavaria does have some fantastic beers as well.

@@andrewsouza4925 For me, as a northern German, the Bavarian beers are far too light and too mild (too less hop).

@@juliettpapa A Bavarian brewer, Josef Groll, created Pilsner Urquell. Beer heaven for me is Bavarian and the Czech Republic-though I understand North Germans simply don’t like Bavarians or their beer.

I just don't know how to thank you guys for every bit of info you shared here. I'm sitting right now in U Zlateho Slona waiting for my food on a third day of my solo trip in Prague. And each moment I roaming around I just know that I have a good place to eat or just to rest, because you shared this. And I see the difference between the touristy places nearby and the places you suggest - knowing those places from perpectove of a local is so valuable and so much valuable to have it as a tourist. Thank you again ❤️

Dobrý Advent a veselé Vánoce všem

Although I was born in Czechia, I've been living abroad most of my life, and have been back many times. I have a lovely memory of going to U Kocoura with my wife on the one trip in 2004 when I met up my parents during their annual Czech vacation. My dad had his picture taken pouring a beer, and later I had mine taken at the same spot too. We all enjoyed a lovely meal and beers there, except my wife who was pregnant with our first daughter and was not drinking (this was happy news that my parents had just learned they were going to have a grandchild). That was 20 years ago now, my dad passed away a few years later and mom is gone too. It was a nice moment we spent a few days traveling together. Our daughter now is starting 2nd year university.
It is always nice to be back, seeing the home country and hearing Czech spoken.

Oh my god. My grandad used to go to this pub every day when he was a University student in Prague (Lichtenstein palace) in the 60s-70s. He always mentions it when talking about Prague. (Favourite story is watching the locals drink 20 beers everyday and stumble out)
It’s amazing to see it on the channel. 😅

Fantastic video, I love to see the old traditional pubs of Prague. I've never been to Prague, but it's a must visit for me after watching your videos. I'm a huge fan of Pilsner Urquell, there are a couple of pubs here in Ireland that do tank beers, Pilsner Urquell being one of them, but I'm certain it will taste so much better in Prague. Also the food looks amazing, the Goulash and potato pancakes looked amazing. Hope to visit Prague next year and thanks to you I now know where to go and how not to be scammed, keep up the great work !

Like you, I'm a big fan of Urquell. Golden Tiger is an old traditional pub - sadly full of tourists. Červený jelen is too big and not a proper a proper beer place in my book. But they serve theie Urquell in a proper way and have good food. Goulash is not my favorite - ok food when drinking. And the rest of the beer places mentioned in this video are very good. When you go to Prague you should try beer form other breweries. Here are the few I like Staropramen 11 from tank, Hubertus 11 from tank, Vinohradsky brewery and Andelsky brewery.

Guys you missed U Medvídků (At the Bears), U Dvou koček (At Two Cats) and probably other places with similar names. It is true that U Medvídků does not have Plzeň, but apart from Budvar they've got many home made beers (Oldgott, Blackgott, Medvídek, X-BEER 33, Podzimní speciál etc). However, U Dvou koček has Plzeň on the menu together with their own home beer (Kočka světlá or Kočka tmavá). Both of these places are in the very city center of Prague.

We did the Prague zoo as a pub-crawl 2 weeks ago! It was my favourite part of my 1 month euro trip. We started early and stopped in at Ceska kuchyne for a late lunch. It was a lot of fun, it takes you past all of the best sites, and all of the bars are REALLY cool (and no we weren't yelling or being rambunctious). The only minor issue we encountered was at U zlateho slona because they said we weren't allowed to have only beer (i.e. needed to order food). We had JUST eaten so didn't want to get food. We politely asked if we could have just 10 minutes and convinced them to let us stand at a barrel and quickly have our pint. Everywhere else went perfectly! Thank you for the great advice!

The Elephant is a great pub with great food. The Hippopotamus, well it certainly is a fine pub with a real local feel but they have refused to serve me on a number of occasions for no apparent reason, but when I'm with my Czech friends there's never a problem., I'm not Czech and one would think this pub does not want tourists, that's just my perception.

Frankly, I'd never go to this kind of places. "Locals", i.e. beer alcoholics, rude personal, no cards accepted? They can kiss my ass straight away. Trying to impose rules, instead of serving the client "they don't like small beer orders"? Fuck off. Paid cooperation, sure, but this video crosses the line, it is pure ad, not a useful info for a tourist.

I don't see the problem. I'm not Czech too, never been there but Im sure they wouldn't serve me too, I don't really care. Just don't go where they don't like tourists or foreigners. If they don't like them just let them do whatever, why would you want to be in a place you're not welcome and anyway it's their loss since most of the profit in service economy in Prague comes from tourist consumers.

So I couldn’t do the whole train but I did the following. Thanks for all the recommendations!
U kocoura- tasty klobasa and very friendly local patrons, I practiced my czech with a very friendly czech couple who may have been trying to find someone to pick up 😅
U černého vola - had good Olomouc cheese and seemed decently easy to get a seat if in a couple or 3.
U Hrocha - bartender refused to serve me because I was standing despite there being a dozen or so of older large drunk czech men all standing and being loud.
U Zlatého Tygra - was packed and I felt lucky to get a beer because the Barman looked a bit irritated so I did my best to just blend into a wall.
U Zlatého Slona - I would probably take tourist friends here. Open atmosphere, lots of seating, good food, and English speaking staff.

No offense, but it makes no sense to go to Prague in several places in a row just to try Pilsner Urquell. Yes, it's almost perfect, which makes it quite boring, and I bet you can buy it even in your country. The preciousness of Prague, and The Czech Republic is in the enormous diversity of small breweries, and the thing you really should do - is to try as many sorts of different beers as you can. Some pubs like Zlý časy, Kulový blesk, Prague Beer Museum, e.t.c. will help you with this task.

Not sure it is your thing but when I lived in Prague I met my Slovak wife in El Mojito on Dlhá. Great cocktail bar….try the Beverley Hills cocktail and tell them Steve and Jana recommend it to you. You will see our names on the top of the bar where they allow frequent visitors to write a message. ❤

Ach jo, PU nikdy nebylo pivo "Černého vola", ale bylo tím vždy a je 12° Kozel. To by člověk takových zkušeností měl vědět a u Vola pít Kozel. Na Plzničku K Hrochovi, k Volovi na kozlíka. Pane Rubeši, toto byl velký kiks.

Pity you didn't show U dvou kocek (By two cats), of course they have Pilsner, but also their own beer , light and dark cat, and it's one of the oldest pubs in Prague. Another great place is U medvidku (By small bears) with their own brewery.

I'm excited to taste Pilsner Urquell in Prague, but it would be great to see pubs that carry locally produced craft beer as well! By craft beer, I don't necessarily mean American-style IPAs, I just mean small-batched locally made beer rather than large commercially produced beers.

Dva kohouti does have that, was definitely the best pub I went in for good beer. Can't get enough of Urquell though, especially when poured properly. Červeny jelen is probably my favourite overall.

For butchers, try “Naše Mašo”, in Dlouha, in old town (Stare Mesto)
They even have a couple of tables, so you can buy food in the butchers shop, they will cook it for you, and you can eat it in the shop
They even have a draft beer pump in one of their tiled walls.
Expect to queue, it’s very popular, their food is some of the best I have even eaten, and it’s very reasonably priced for the quality.

České pivo mi chybí. Můžu koupit Pilsner Urquell tady v Kanadě ale to není stejně věc. Možná to je stejné pivo, ale to se cítí odlišně. Už myslím o další cestě do Česku. Na zdraví a uvidíme se příště!

You've reminded me of Santiago de Compostela (yes, the destination of the Way of St. James) where they had the "Paris-Dakar". It was just that there were these two pubs on the opposite sides of the "party area" (for the lack of a better expression) that were respectively named Paris and Dakar. There were absolutely no other pub, bar or whatever with a name related to that race, but the thing was you would start your night at Paris and should (is you could) go pub after pub until you reached Dakar.
Just like the real race, many wouldn't get to the destination. I only tried it once and got the destination with some friends, but the day after was a bit of a pain...

Golden Tiger is the one I frequent while staying in Prague. What do you think about other animalistic pubs? Like U Červeného páva; U Modré Kachničky (it's more of a restaurant) or U Černého orla.

Dear Janek & Honza, 12 years ago I visited Prague a couple of times and I once ended up in a bar/pub with a very small stage for bands and they had little piglets walking around. Do you guys maybe know the name of the place? I would really like to go there again cause I will be in Prague from the 16th till 19th of February. Hope to hear from you!

This video definitely needs an update. Been to the Golden Elephant today and can honestly say as someone who's been to Prague many times already: an absolute tourist trap. My partner and I had dinner there tonight as per recommendation in this video, although it felt kinda shady even from the outside. The staff is arrogant and just hanging around and observing you. The food arrived in less than 5 min (red flag) and tasted kinda meh (and on top of that I have never in my life received fried cheese without any side dish). The whole experience felt dissapointing so we ate quickly, finished the beer and asked to pay. The waiter literally GRUNTED at us when my partner just rounded up the sum of our bill (which was an equivalent of less than an euro I guess) and said nothing more, even on our way out. Just don't go there.

Great video. I wish I saw this a month ago before I went to Prague but I did go to most of those old pubs on this video. A couple of other great ones but not fitting the zoo theme are U Medivuku which has tank Budweiser Budvaf (Czech Budweiser not American) which is a great old school Prague pub and Tankova Kozel which is more modern but serves Kozel light and dark from the tank.

    • @Starkiller935
      @Starkiller935 ปีที่แล้ว

Actually, both would fit the zoo theme since U Medvídků means By The Little Bears' and Kozel is a male goat

Hey I've been following you guys for a while now and have a sorta weird question to ask. My grandpa just died a bit ago and we were interested in getting a curio with his fingerprint and a short phrase in Czech (their heritage is from the town of Veseli). Would you be able to help with this? I'm not sure if there is a big difference in dialects between regions, but we figured google translate wouldn't work too well. The phrase is "Forever and Always", or some similar meaning if that doesnt directly translate.
Thanks, I look forward to hearing back!
    -Joe
