Peruvian food is one of the world’s great cuisines, and I was thrilled to have a chance to visit Peru to learn about and taste the food. In this video, get ready for an ultimate 14-hour straight Peruvian street food tour of Lima!
Here’s everything included in this food tour:
La Parada Market - If you love vegetable markets, I don’t think anywhere else in Lima is as colorful, energetic, and vibrant. This is the beating heart of Lima’s food supply, and I fully enjoyed walking around and seeing the diversity of ingredients from around Peru all in one busy wholesale Market.
Caldo Cesar - Elias navigated us to Caldo Cesar, a restaurant that was incredibly packed and specializes in some of Lima’s best caldo de gallina - chicken hen soup. It was one of the best chicken soups I’ve ever had in my life. Total Price - 52 PEN ($15.71) for 4
Ceviche Cart - One of the national dishes and most beloved dishes of Peru is ceviche (raw fish in lime juice), and we walked over to the section of the market where they sell fish and seasonings for ceviche and had a plate of fresh Peruvian ceviche. It was delicious. Price - 8 PEN ($2.42)
Fruit Tasting - This was pretty unplanned, we just walked around the fruit market and tasted about a dozen types of fruit. My favorite fruits were the Sanky - Fruit produced by a cactus, Camu camu - Native to the Amazon rainforest, and Lucuma - Gold of the Incas.
Papa rellena - This is one of the most common of all Peru street foods, a papa rellena, or a Peruvian stuffed potato. I was impressed - one of the best fried potatoes maybe I’ve ever had in my life.
Tocosh - This fermented potato pulp, was invented by the Incas, and it’s not for the faint of heart. I thought it was unique and pretty delicious, and fun to eat, and it contains natural penicillin.
Papa con huevo - This was ok, but just basic, a potato with egg on top and doused in sauces. This is again, a classic part of Peruvian street food, especially enjoyed by children.
Sanguchería El Chinito - “I practically moved to Peru just for this sandwich.” - Timour Ghoneim. That says it all about this legendary chicharrón Peruvian sandwich located at Plaza de Armas. And he was right, you would move to Lima for this sandwich.
Don Tito Pollos a la Brasa - If you ask Peruvians what is one of their comfort foods, I’m guessing pollo a la brasa would be a common answer. Pollo a la brasa is Pervuian rotisserie chicken, but somehow they just do it better in Peru. Total Price - 84 PEN ($25.39)
Anticuchos Manuela - Without a doubt, this was one of my favorite parts of this entire Peru street food tour of Lima, anticuchos, or grilled cow hearts. They are truly majestic, so juicy and flavorful, you won’t believe it. Price - 10 PEN ($3.02)
Picarones - Finally to end this ultimate street food in Peru tour of Lima, we ordered some picarones, donuts made from sweet potato and pumpkin. They are addictively delicious and should be eaten when you’re in Lima. Price - 6 PEN ($1.81) per box

I rarely comment, and perhaps no one will see this especially since I am so late, but this had to be one of the most entertaining episodes that I have watched of Mark's! My boyfriend is from Peru, and when ever I go visit, I watch all the videos I can and make a list of where I want to visit and what foods I want to eat. It's the food and the people that will make me move to Peru, since it is a lot healthier for me there than it would be for him to move to the US. Soy Mexicano exactamente del norte de Monterrey y tengo que reconocer que el Peru tiene la mejor gastronomia de America ,eh viajado a Peru por trabajo y cuando me tome unas vacaciones conocí todos los departamentos y es sorprendente la variedad de comidas y platos típicos ,Mexico tambien tiene lo suyo pero nose tiene algo distinto a los demas ,para mi ojo Peru es sin duda el mejor destino culinario del mundo ,espero volver este año con toda mi familia .saludos causa

OMG! Peru is amazing. I had visited Peru 3 times in my lifetime. I was just there two years ago. The fact that I’m Trilingual (fluent in English, Spanish and Portuguese) makes it a lot easier for me to communicate with them. In 1930, the ambassador of U.S Miles Poindexter wrote his book. The ancient Indians crossed the Pacific Ocean and came to South America. He showed the similarities between the QUICHUA language of South America and Sanskrit India. He described INCA ruler hymns and Vedic hymns as one, and he finally wrote the people of Maya and Inca civilization were undoubtedly Hindus. Its interesting to note that the biggest festival each year observed by the Incas was called the Rama-Sitva, which they have now disguised as the Inti Raymi. Sir William Jones, however, has preserved this historical fact in the following quote:
"Rama is represented as a descendant from the Sun, as the husband of Sita, and the son of a princess named Causelya. It is very remarkable that Peruvians, whose Incas boasted of the same descent, styled their greatest festival Rama-Sitva - hence we may take it that South America was peopled by the same race who imported into the farthest parts of Asia the rites and the fabulous history of Rama." Definitivamente le gustó más el cebiche de la parada, que el del chef Wong.
El cebiche del Chef Wong se ve delicioso y muy aceptable a mi gusto,pero me parece muy exagerado pagar casi 600 soles por dos platos y demás,o bueno depende de como tu veas la diferencia entre show y comida a una comida de muy buena calidad y sabor

Como peruano, debo felicitar al Guia "Elias", si que lo llevaste a donde minimamente tenia que ir a probar la verdadera y real comida peruana. Y eso que solo es un recorrido por Lima, cada region del Perú tiene platos típicos diferentes, son 24 regiones en las puedes probar cosas totalmente diferentes ademas de nuestros platos bandera ya conocidos. El Perú es un pequeño mundo dentro del propio mundo.
Recomendación: No vean este video sin almorzar o despues de cenar porque teminaran con la boca hecha agua.

I think Peru is one of the countries that still have its original fruits vegetables and animals it has not been genetically modified. They still have some of the rarest fruits in the world. They have the real stuff. Would like to go there someday.

This is the best way to be really into a culture of a country. Going to the markets,meet up local people; taste local food with tradicional flavor because most of the turists go to expensive restaurantes and it doesn't taste the same. It is awesome how peruvian peoole ,cook,treat people,really nice and friendly

I'm from Peru and let me tell you this, in Lima you can find everything in those street markets, it's freaking hard almost impossible to be in a good shape and live in Peru, there are different dishes, sauces, all over the country. When I was living in USA, I really missed the food in my country. Simply, I can't live without it.

@@enoughofthis you can actually find some through yelp, I went to a couple of peruvian restaurants in USA, they were not bad, but it's nothing compare to the ones in Peru. My advice would be to visit Peru and try the best of the best here.

Creo que en toda Latinoamérica sucede lo mismo, luego cada quien recuerda la comida y cultura de sus países natales y se pasa.
