Viggo Mortensen has always been one of my favorite actors and there's very few that could have been better cast for this movie. His mild mannered demeanor coupled with the ability to turn a scene into something electrifying is awesome to watch. The story of a once corrupt bad guy (now good guy) who has turned his life around and settled in a small town but still knows how to take care of business, if he needs to, is one we can all get into. I've watched it several times and it never gets old.

Slow pace, very intense, violent scenes rare, but incredibly raw and powerfull, because they looked real. None of the High Gloss Hollywood Blockbuster violence.
Like, you can watch someone get ripped into pieces in an Blockbuster Action movie, blood fountains all over, and you Just think: wow, great Special effects.
In this movie you cringe and get Phantom pain when a Guy gets His nose smashed in and know without a doubt and visual evidence that this punch put His nasal bone into his brain and killed him instantly.
Even the emotions: there is No Hero, No Happily ever after.
Just the damage violence and a dark past left behind

That final scene is chilling. There's no dialogue. Only Sarah gets up. She has no idea what Tom/Joey actually is. Edie and Jack don't move; they're terrified. They've met the most brutal killers and realize that Tom/Joey is more dangerous than all of them combined. Tom only looks "normal". Tom didn't kill-off Joey, he is Joey. Tom's the creation, the man Joey decided he'd like to be but isn't. Years after Joey supposedly left his violence behind he can still easily and unemotionally kill the most deadly men imaginable without missing a beat. Is he a hero? The answer is decidedly No.

    • @robertcoutts926

He's not the same man because he chose to leave that life behind, at one time he wanted that life and now he doesn't, he wants a life without criminality, a good life. Tom is a name to describe the person he is now and Joey is the man he used to be but is no longer. Him using his previous skills to protect himself and his family from the men like he used to be, evil men, is not his old self coming out.

Thanks for this recap. It might inspire others to go and watch the full movie. This was good, but in 15 minutes it can't offer the full impact of the movie.
Once the wife understands what Tom is capable of she begins to have fear of him. He is still Tom, he has not been aggressive toward her but she fears him just the same.
Often that is how people treat returning veterans of war. They have fear when they fully comprehend that person is capable of snuffing people. It's no wonder veterans seldom talk about what they have seen and done, they don't want to frighten their family and friends. I have fellow veterans of Vietnam whose families think they were in the rear echelon, maybe a cook, or truck mechanic because they have never mentioned being in real combat.
Tom came to his senses, did not want to be a part of the violence. He somehow managed to slip away, earn enough money to buy a diner and raise a family. That was what he really wanted. The mobsters as usual had that, "We are bigger then you", mentality and weren't smart enough to leave "Joey" alone. They paid dearly for their ego.
I have watched this movie twice and was moved by it both times. I see people I know being pushed into situations that Tom faced. Wanted to be a decent law abiding person but people just don't have enough sense to leave them alone. Because they seek to avoid confrontation, the bullies consider them as weak. It can be a deadly mistake. A few days ago I watched a video of a guy on a bus in a big city, minding his business, two thugs start to harass him. So at next stop he decides to get off. Thugs figure he's scared and start to push him around. Big mistake. That guy can hit like a prize fighter, close inside punches that send the thugs falling backwards. They both need medical care. He didn't want to hurt anyone but when threatened he became defensive and dangerous.
There is a look we share when us veterans detect another vet. Some wear shirts or hats that depict how they served. That's good. It suggests they have dealt with that part of their life and are moving forward.
Friends and family probably know and have accepted that they associate with someone who has been trained to combat an enemy. That is therapeutic for all of them.

Excellent analogy honestly with the violence Veterans have done while serving who also wish to leave that part of their life behind.
As for dealing with thugs, usually just a stare is enough to make them understand. Though in my personal experience simply asking them, "How does it end?" can be sufficiently unnerving too.
Yes, a couple of times I endured listening to lunacy about how I was going to get my ass kicked bla bla bla.
On those occasions I politely let the moron rant until he was finished and then calmly told him," This ends when I hear you say three words."
They I merely explained what would occur.
You will take a swing. When you do I break your arm above and below the elbow. Then I will pancake your elbow and dislocate your shoulder. Prior to the arrival of the ambulance you will look at your arm and begin to scream,
      "CUT IT OFF."
Once I hear that, I walk away. That is how this ends. Take a swing at me and it begins.
That will sound like bravado obviously, I could careless. It works.
Have I ever heard another scream those three words? I will leave that to your imagination.
      Cheers. 🇺🇲

The violent sex scene is, I think, I meant to represent the unrepressed aggression of Joey that the new man Tom has long repressed. This is a very Freudian movie in that sense. Sexual conquest, like violence, is one of our basic animal drives that we as a species have learned to repress in order to build civilization, but it's always under the surface. The criminal is one in whom it is not repressed.

I saw Tom at that moment as a man desperate to reclaim the peaceful life he had come to know. He felt his entire life slipping away, his wife, his family, his sense of place in the community. You could almost feel he was at an emotional breaking point. They both were. Not the best way to accomplish it, for sure, but desperate men under desperate circumstances sometimes do desperate things.

Tom is a representation of a man wanting to live a peaceful life but capable of great violence. Jack represent the innocent protégé he does not want following his foot steps. The guns and blood represent death.

I disagree. The wife actively engages in the sex act, pulling Tom towards her when he backs off. She wants him back too. Watch it again.

      @thinkforyourself2109 ปีที่แล้ว

@@robertsyourrelative That's true but it's still a violent sex scene and there's an element of conquest. In this case, the woman wanted to be taken by force -- a common fantasy among women -- but not politically correct to say so.
