  • Ella Fitzgerald is often described as the "Queen of Jazz" and her improvisatory scatting is the stuff that college music students spend hours analyzing. But this video is going to dive beyond the commonly discussed subjects surrounding Ella, and look deeper into how she reinvented herself to sustain an outrageously successful career over 5 decades long.
Special thanks to Dr. Jeffrey M. Lyness. Here's a link to his paper about creative resilience in the lives of celebrated musicians: www.sciencedirect.com/science.... He also gives a fantastic presentation on Ella Fitzgerald in particular which is a true delight to absorb.

Fittingly, I just rented a few Ella Fitzgerald cds from my local library a few weeks ago lol. The Rodgers and Hart songbook, to be exact. She really was AMAZING.
Edit: Check your local libraries for music, people. Take a chance, embrace trying new music, you won't regret it.

Listening to Ella Fitzgerald helps me understand so much about singing. She truly was the greatest. I've always been interested with the voice. "The Singing Hole" is teaching me about things I have thought about, but could never understand fully or explain. What a great channel!

Love that you are featuring such an angel of song. The photos you have compiled are amazing as well as the details and vocal analysis. Her tone and pitch are perfect. And you can hear that gorgeous smile in her voice. This project is clearly a work of love. Thanks for the melodies.

Especially with her early tracks, Elizabeth once you said her scatting improv was inspired by the horn section it really clicked. You can practically hear the horns playing those parts as you hear them.

I'm amazed that her performance of "All of me" didn't get a mention, my whole phrasing game on guitar improv originated from her singing this one song.

I rarely watch TH-cam Premieres because I usually prefer to engage at my own pace / convenience, but when I do the conversation in chat invariably turns to complete dog****. Can I just say you have built a wonderful community, seems like there's still hope (ok, maybe Rick Beato & Justin H as well).

A couple months ago, I checked your channels for iconic female singers. Seeing your video today of Ella Fitzgerald is definitely a great addition to The Singing Hole. If you don't mind a recommendation for future videos, please consider creating a similar video about Linda Ronstadt.

Drool worthy review. Elizabeth is so enthusiastic and engaging - and perfect diction. I heard Ella and Mel Torme jam when I was a kid - jaw-dropping. This channel helps me to fall more in love with music every day. Thanks. ♫

Oh, what's the next chorus to this song now? What??😄This is totally awesome improvisation! Wow! I remember vaguely having some lessons about Jazz, Bebop at school. That had been so unbelievable boring. Never touched that topic again. Now hearing you talking about it for less than 30 min makes me immediately get a notion about the greatness of Ella Fitzgerald and her singing style. By the way, this is a great production. Did you use a new mic? The recording sounds a little brighter? Or maybe a there's a little more dynamic in the range? Hard to describe, but it sounds really good!

Thinking on this fascinating look at her long career, and other videos like Crazy Train and Mr. Crowley, got me wondering about the general impact of aging on vocal abilities and techniques/practices to maintain them. I’d love to see a future episode on that topic!

Sarah Vaughan might be a more appropriate artist with regard to the topic of age and the voice. She had the least vocal deterioration of the great lady Jazz singers, over the span of a many decades long career.

I, of course, know the legendary name, and know a couple of songs (we played a few sans vocals in my Jr high jazz band), but I definitely need to explore her career more after seeing this. I'm a rocker for sure, but I appreciate and enjoy a wide variety of music, especially jazz and blues. Thanks, Elizabeth!

very enjoyable like all your videos. One thing I wonder is how well would come of classic singers from the past would do in the ‘modern area’ with shows like American Idol and others like it

    • @Gwen3344
      @Gwen3344 หลายเดือนก่อน

Just the title alone, American Idol, why its virtual blasphemy to even consider comparing the greats of the past to the mediocrities of today. Today, fame is the name of the game; technology rules. In the older eras, artistry and mastery mattered and were pursued. Singers today don't have to master anything; they have technology (e.g. autotune) to hide their flaws and elevate their 'talent'. Give me Ella Fitzgerald any day, and all day long, over what passes for talent today.

Food for thought. Hardly a great singer (as far as I know), but it might be fun to do a segment on Michael Winslow and just how he makes all those sounds.

Do you know of Joanna Newsom? She is a harpist and singer and consider somewhat “freak folk” I think it would be so interesting to have someone break down her super unique voice! She is one of my absolute favorites. Also Anonhi and the Johnsons (formerly Antoni and the Johnsons) another artist with a crazy beautiful and incredibly unique voice!
